The spot weldability of dissimilar metal joints between stainless steels (AISI316) and interstitial free (IF) steels were investigated. This study was aimed to determine the spot welding parameters for a dissimilar metal joint and to evaluate the dissimilar metal joint's weldability, including its welding nugget shape, tensileshear strength, hardness, and microstructure. The fracture surface was investigated by using a Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The experimental results showed that the shape of nugget was asymmetric, in which the fusion zone of the STS316 sheet was larger due to the higher bulk-resistance. The microstructure of the fusion zone was fully martensite. In order to evaluate the microstructure further, dilution of stainless steels were calculated and imposed onto the Schaeffler diagram. The predicted microstructure from the Schaeffler diagram was martensite. In order to confirm the predicted microstructure, XRD measurements were carried out. The results showed that that initial weld nugget was composed of austenite and martensite.

This study was carried out to investigate the optimum condition of a friction stir welding process for a joint of AA2219-T87 and AA2195-T8 dissimilar aluminum alloys. These alloys are known to have good cryogenic properties, and as such to be suitable for use in fuel tanks of space vehicles. The welding parameters include the travelling speed, rotation speed and rotation direction of the tool. The experiment was conducted under conditions in which the travelling speed of the tool was 120-300 mm/min and the rotation speed of the tool was 400-800 rpm. To investigate the effect of the rotation direction of the tool, the joining was performed by switching the positions of the two dissimilar alloys. After welding, the microstructure was observed and the micro-hardness were measured; non-destructive evaluation was carried out to perform tensile tests on defect-free specimens. The result was that the microstructure of the weld joint underwent dynamic recrystallization due to sufficient deformation and frictional heat. The travelling speed of the tool had little effect on the properties of the joint, but the properties of the joint varied with the rotation speed of the tool. The conditions for the best joining properties were 600 rpm and 180-240 mm/min when the AA2219-T8 alloy was on the retreating side(RS).

The spot weldability of dissimilar metal joints between austenitic stainless steels (STS316)/IF steels and ferritic stainless steels (STS430)/IF steels was investigated. This study was aimed to determine the spot welding parameters for a dissimilar metal joint and to evaluate the dissimilar metal joint's weldability, including its welding nugget shape, tensile-shear strength, hardness, and microstructure. The comparison of these results was described in terms of fracture behavior. Compared with the weld lobe of similar metal joints, dissimilar metal joints (STS430/IF) had reduced weld current range. However, the weld lobe of STS316/IF steel joint showed increased weld current range. This is because the dilution of chemical composition in the molten weld pool suppressed the heat input being caused by Joule heat with current flow through the samples. The microstructure of the fusion zone was fully martensite and mixture of ferrite and martensite for austenitic stainless steel/IF steel and ferritic stainless steel/IF steel combination, respectively. The experimental results showed that the shape of nugget was asymmetric, in which the fusion zone of the austenitic and ferritic stainless steel sheet was larger due to the higher bulk-resistance. The predicted microstructure by using the Schaeffler diagram was well matched with experimental results. After peel test, the fracture was initiated from heat affected zone of ferritic stainless steel sheet side, however the final fracture was propagated into the IF steel sheet side due to its lower strength.

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state process, where the objects are joined together without reaching their melting point. It has been shown that this method is a suitable way to join dissimilar aluminium alloys. The current article employed hole drilling technique to measure the residual stress distribution experimentally in different zones of dissimilar aluminium alloys AA6061-T6 and AA7075-T6 Butt welded using FSW. Results are compared with those of similar AA6061-T6 plates joined using a conventional fusion welding method called tungsten inert gas (TIG). Also, the evolution of the residual stresses in the thickness direction was investigated, and it was found that the maximum residual stresses are below the yield strength of the material in the shoulder region. It was also revealed that the longitudinal residual stresses in the joint were much larger than the transverse residual stresses. Meanwhile, Vickers micro hardness measurements were performed in the cross-section of the samples. The largest hardness values were observed in the stir zone (SZ) adjacent to the advancing side whereas low hardness values were measured at the HAZ of both alloys and the SZ adjacent to the retreating side.
Friction stir welding has become a viable and important manufacturing alternative or fabrication component, especially in aerospace and automobile applications involving aluminium alloys. In recent years, there is an increasing interest for FSW of dissimilar metals and alloys, particularly systems which are difficult to weld by conventional, thermal (or fusion) welding. In this study we tried to analyse the complex heat distribution occurring in TIG assisted FSW of dissimilar butt joint (STS304 and Al6061). For this, an analytical model for heat generation by FSW based on contact conditions has been developed. The heat input was calculated considering the coefficient of friction and slip factor between each work piece material with the tool material. The thermal model is used to generate the temperature characteristics curve, which successfully predicts the maximum welding temperature in each alloys. The analysis was carried out using the in-house solver.

In this study, fatigue life is evaluated by comparing with lighter car body through the experiment on SPR joints. An experimental activity on sheet metal samples of Aluminum 5J32 and Steel SPRC440 has been conducted to achieve better understanding of the process. In addition, SPR joint used less than the existing Spot Welding improves joint strength and fatigue life is evaluated by using SPR and adhesive joining Hybrid. Joining(bonding) strength and fatigue life on SPR and Hybrid (SPR + adhesive) are evaluated throughout the experiment. With joining strength than 20 % of the aluminum material, dissimilar materials has improved over 2 times as large as the strength In case of dissimilar materials, the fatigue life of aluminum is increased by 1.6 to 2.5 times as large as the life.
This paper reports mild steel(SPHC) and stainless steel(STS304) sheets commonly used for railroad cars or commercial vehicles such as in the automobile and shipbuilding industries. The sheets are used in these applications, which are mainly fabricated using the shielded metal arc welding(SMAW) of dissimilar materials. It also reports an interesting application of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy(LIBS) in order to determine the elemental composition diffusion of SPHC and STS304. Arc blow produced by magnetic force during the electric arc welding prevents the formation from a sound weldment. In particular, the mechanical properties of the joint are influenced by not only by geometrical and mechanical factors but also the welding conditions for the arc welded joint. Therefore, the mechanical properties and performance are evaluated by performing a physicochemical component analysis. And they increase in accordance with content of elements and microstructure in mild steel. As results, appropriate range for magnetic fields could be achieved. Therefore, the effect of magnetic force in a butt weld of mild steel plates was investigated by comparing to the measured data.
The engine exhaustive valve became essential as the important element. The dissimmilar welding method of exhaustive valve head to stem was asked for manufacturing the engine exhaustive valve, for which the electric resistance are welding has been conventionally used, resulting in poor quality of the welded joint. In this paper, not only the development of optimizing of friction welding with more reliability and more applicability but also the development of in-process real-time weld qudlity(such as strength and toughness) evaluation technique by acoustic emission for friction welding of the engine exhaustive valve(SUH3-SUH35 dissimilar steels) were perfomed. The high temperature(500, 500, 600$^{circ}$C) creep properties prediction of the friction welded joint of SUH3-SUH35 was investigated relating to the initial strain meethod(ISM) as a new approach, resulting in obtaining an experimental equation of creep life prediction.
This paper presents the characteristics of mechanical properties within the heat affected zones(HAZs) of dissimilar metal weld joint between SA508 Gr.1a and F3l6 stainless steel(SS) with Alloy 82/182 filler metal. Tensile tests were performed using small-size specimens taken from the heat affected regions close to both fusion lines of weld, and the micro-structures were examined using optical microscope(OM) and transmission microscope(TEM). The results showed that significant gradients of the yield stress(YS), ultimate tensile stress(UTS), and elongations were observed within the HAZ of SA508 Gr.1a. This was attributed to the different microstructures within the HAZ developed during the welding process. In the HAZ of F316 SS, however, the welding effect dominated the YS and elongation rather than UTS. TEM micrographs demonstrated these characteristics of the HAZ of F316 SS was associated with a dislocation-induced strain hardening.
Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is a solid-state joining process and a rapidly growing dissimilar material welding technology for joining metallic alloys in the automotive industry. Welding tool shape and process conditions must be appropriately controlled to obtain high bonding characteristics. In this study, FSSW is performed on dissimilar materials AA5052-H32 aluminum alloy sheet and SPRC440 steel sheet, and the influence of the shape of joining tool and tool insertion depth during joining is investigated. A new intermetallic compound is produced at the aluminum and steel sheets joint. When the insertion depth of the tool is insufficient, the intermetallic compound between the two sheets did not form uniformly. As the insertion depth increased, the intermetallic compound layer become uniform and continuous. The joint specimen shows higher values of tensile shear load as the diameter and insertion depth of the tool increase. This shows that the uniform formation of the intermetallic compound strengthens the bonding force between the joining specimens and increases the tensile shear load.
