  • In this paper, a display's emotional image quality can be primarily determined by designing the proper luminance level. Though displays with high luminance are preferred, too much light emission from a display may cause glare or visual fatigue to viewers. To find out the proper luminance level based on various video contents, this study was conducted with an OLED display with a real-black level and a wide color gamut, and with an LCD display with a high luminance level, to set the glare threshold under various conditions. The optimum luminance levels according to the display's loading ratio were found, and the maximum luminance that did not cause a glare in the test is proposed.

  • In the present study, we investigated the physiological effects of smartphone use at night when the display luminance and white balance were differently manipulated. Two levels of luminance and two types of white balance were combined to form four types of displays. Subjects were instructed to use smartphones between 23:00 to 01:00 twice a week for two weeks, and for each trial, subjects were given one of the four display types. Melatonin concentration in the saliva, body temperature and heart rate were measured before and after each experiment. The experimental result showed that the low luminance display supported melatonin secretion and thermoregulation compared to the high luminance display. With regard to the white balance, higher melatonin level was observed when using the display that filtered blue light. The low luminance display together with yellowish tint best supported restful sleep at night in terms of every physiological response. This study collectively demonstrates that bright and blue light emitted from smartphone displays adversely affect melatonin secretion, body temperature, and heart rate, and therefore, suggests the use of a display with low luminance or a display that filters blue light for a restful sleep at night.

  • The luminance efficiency of the red organic light-emitting devices fabricated utilizing a double electron transport layer (ETL) consisting of an Al-doped and an undoped layer was investigated. The Al atoms existing in the ETL acted as hole blocking sites, resulting in an increase in the luminance efficiency.

  • High Luminance PDPs have been developed using high efficient electrode structure, discharge gas and fishbone type barrier ribs. New phosphors for the good picture quality were developed. Also, New manufacturing processes such as CPBB were applied in order to reduce processing steps. High Luminance of 1,000 $cd/m^2$ was obtained in the series of 42 inch, 50 inch and 60 inch PDPs.

  • The time dependences of the luminance properties of 55-inch CCFL and LED backlights and 32-inch FFL backlights with LCD panels were investigated during the warm-up time from the cold start. The long-term luminance maintenance curve of a standard CCFL was examined in a time window up to 5000 hours. These two time dependences are important characteristics from the viewpoint of initial picture quality and lifetime reliability, respectively. Empirical equations were suggested for the analysis of the time dependence of these luminance data. These approaches are expected to be helpful in predicting the luminance properties of backlights based on the luminance data obtained in a limited time window.

  • Light-emitting diode(LEDs), diode arrays, and phosphor display panels are finding increased use in a variety of commercial applications. Present and anticipated application of these devices include solid state indicator(e.g., digital clocks, meter readout) and display systems(e.g., instrument panels, TV display), the application being determined by the light -output capability and size availability(cost) of the particular device. In this work, Phosphor based on ZnS:Cu are used. Relation by luminance with the thickness of insulating layer and phosphor layer are discussed. Increased thickness of insulating layer are stable on voltage to 300V. By considering thickness and voltage, optimal structure and thickness are investigated. Also in order to maximize even surface emission, various sieving process are introduced. Very similar phosphor particle size is selected. Luminance by various wave intensity is also investigated. 150cd/m$^2$ luminance are investigated in stable voltage and frequency.

  • In recent, displays have very good properties at high luminance, fast response, and size. Also They have good quality in terms of color according to the development of the gamut extension and color reproduction. However, despite these merits, there is a characteristic that at a high luminance display, observer perceive the different color from the originally re-producted color due to the change of perceived luminance in human visual system. In this paper, we propose a model that is the hue shift phenomenon between a normal display and a high luminance display, and then an algorithm which compensate the color between two devices, so that observer can perceive the same color.

  • In a spatially interlaced stereoscopic (SIS) three-dimensional (3D) display to be realized by providing the observer a part of left-eye/right-eye images, a loss of information can be perceived due to the un-shown part of each image. In order to resolve that problem, an improved SIS 3D display is proposed to deliver the images without loss of information to the observer using a time-multiplexing scheme. However, that time-multiplexing SIS also has a problem of luminance distortion when the desired luminance is not shown due to an insufficient response of the liquid crystal cell. In this paper, we propose a new method by optimizing the image data to show correct luminance with minimum distortion.

  • MgO thick film for ac-PDPs was formed via electrophoresis deposition process and its effect on luminance and luminance efficiency were evaluated. The electrophoresis deposition process of MgO thick film was optimized through parametric study and defects levels in MgO powders was evaluated using cathodoluminescence spectra measurements. The results demonstrate a possibility of using MgO thick film as electron emission layer for ac-PDPs.

  • Many well-known pixel compensation circuits have been applied to control TFT $V_{th}$ variations on small size AMOLED panels. For large (>30-inch) AMOLEDs, luminance and color uniformity are affected by TFT variations, but also by ELVDD IR drop and cavity non-uniformity which are not easily compensated by in-pixel circuits. AMOLED panels may also suffer from manufacturing-induced mura. An external compensation method based on optical measurements is proposed and applied to large AMOLED panels. It improves luminance uniformity by up to 95% at 200nits and color uniformity by up to 99% (${\Delta}$u'v' <0.004) on large AMOLED panels, and provides-increased margin against processinduced mura.
