  • The pantograph-catenary system is one of important components for high-speed rail system that are powered electrically. Electrical power is delivered from a catenary structure to the train via a pantograph and thus it is very important to regulate the contact force between catenary and pantograph. Although a lot of research results for active pantograph have been reported, most of them have made an unrealistic assumption that the catenary displacement is constant with respect to the time. In this paper, we present a new pantograph model that regards the catenary displacement as an unknown disturbance input. Moreover, a disturbance observer based controller is proposed to remove the effect of disturbance, i.e., the catenary displacement variation. The computer simulation result shows that the substantial improvement in regulating the contact force can be achieved by the proposed controller.

  • A laser measurement system, a modified Michelson interferometer, which can accurately measure high speed length and displacement of servomechanisms by detecting a phase shift in the measurement beam using an optical interference was developed. A frequency stabilized laser source and a 20 fold frequency interpolation and digitizing circuit were applied to the system. The refra- ctive index of the ambient air was calibrated through the Edlens formula. The system achieved a resolution of /40, 16nm, a maximum allow-able measurement speed of 600nm/sec, and a length measure- ment range of 1500 mm. Performance of the system was evaluated on the machining center in short and long length measurements.

  • Field monitoring techniques offer an attractive approach for understanding bridge behavior under in-service loads. However, the investigations on bridge behavior under high-speed train load using field monitoring data are limited. The focus of this study is to explore the structural behavior of an in-service long-span steel truss arch bridge based on field monitoring data. First, the natural frequencies of the structure, as well as the train driving frequencies, are extracted. Then, the train-induced bearing displacement and structural strain are explored to identify the effects of train loads and bearings. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis is performed for the impact factor of strain responses with respect to the train speed, train weight, and temperature to identify the fundamental issues affecting these responses. Additionally, a similar sensitivity analysis is conducted for the peak acceleration. The results indicate that the friction force in bearings provides residual deformations when two consecutive trains are in opposite directions. In addition, the impact factor and peak acceleration are primarily affected by train speed, particularly near train speeds that result in the resonance of the bridge response. The results can provide additional insight into the behavior of the long-span steel truss bridges under in-service high-speed train loads.

  • In this paper, we establish measurement methods of vibration frequency for three-dimensional behavior measurement of large-scale structure using laser and high-speed CCD camera. We project the diode laser having a smaller fluctuation on the object plane attached to the structure and measure the displacement of the structure using a precise relative measurement algorithm. When we use high-speed(120 frames/sec) CCD camera, we can measure the vibration frequency having the uncertainty within 0.5% by taking FFT on the displacement, from 0Hz to 40Hz. And we also confirm the reliability and economical string of the suggested measurement method of vibration frequency of the structure by showing the accuracy of displacement measurement using laser is comparable to that of relative positioning methods using GPS.

  • It has been known that one of the main obstacles of improving the performance of positive displacement hydraulic turbine is pressure pulsation which occurs at the regions upstream and downstream of the turbine. In order to suppress the pressure pulsation. occurrence reason of the pressure pulsation should be understood in detail Therefore. this study aims to establish a CFD analysis method by which the phenomena of unsteady pressure pulsation can be examined with high accuracy. Internal flow field of the turbine is modeled simply to generalize the relation between the pressure pulsation and internal flow. The results show that the Present CFD method adopting unsteady calculation can be applied successfully to the analysis of the Phenomena of Pressure Pulsation. Occurrence of the Pressure pulsation is due to the difference of the rotational speed of turbine rotors When driving rotor rotates by uniform speed and fellowing rotor rotates by variable speed, very large Pressure pulsation occurs within the turbine periodically.

  • This paper proposes a method for measurement three-dimensional trajectories of bubbles generated around a swimmer's arms from stereo high-speed camera videos. This method is based on two techniques: two-dimensional trajectory estimation in single-camera images and trajectory pair matching in stereo-camera images. The two-dimensional trajectory is estimated by block matching using similarity of bubble shape and probability of bubble displacement. The trajectory matching is achieved by a consistensy test using epipolar constraint in multiple frames. The experimental results in two-dimensional trajectory estimation showed the estimation accuracy of 47% solely by the general optical flow estimation, whereas 71% taking the bubble displacement into consideration. This concludes bubble displacement is an efficient aspect in this estimation. In three-dimensional trajectory estimation, bubbles were visually captured moving along the flow generated by an arm; which means an efficient material for swimmers to swim faster.

  • In this study, the nominal wake field of a semi-displacement type high-speed vessel was computed at full scale by using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and GEOSIM-based approaches. A scale effect investigation on nominal wake field of benchmark Athena vessel was performed with two models which have different model lengths. The members of the model family have the same Fr number but different Re numbers. The spatial components of nominal wake field have been analyzed by considering the axial, radial and tangential velocities for models at different scales. A linear feature has been found for radial and tangential components while a nonlinear change has been obtained for axial velocity. Taylor wake fraction formulation was also computed by using the axial wake velocities and an extrapolation technique was carried out to get the nonlinear fit of nominal wake fraction. This provides not only to observe the change of nominal wake fraction versus scale ratios but also to estimate accurately the wake fraction at full-scale. Extrapolated full-scale nominal wake fractions by GEOSIM-based approach were compared with the full-scale CFD result, and a very good agreement was achieved. It can be noted that the GEOSIM-based extrapolation method can be applied for estimation of the nominal wake fraction of semi-displacement type high-speed vessels.
