  • Since the mid of the 20th century in the world, it has been observed that the number of minor or moderate earthquake motions tend to be increased year by year. Owing to the topographical condition, moreover, large numbers of skew bridges have been constructed for the requirements of more than DB18 ton bridge in Korea. It has been also observed from foreign countries that lots of superstructures collapse in bridge were occurred in previous earthquakes, inclusive of 1995 Kobe earthquake. This is caused by a relative displacement between the upper and lower structure of bridge by the earthquake and the rotation with respect to the vertical axis of skew bridges, which were subjected to and earthquake motion. In this study, the probabilistic analysis of unseating failure of skew bridges under scenario earthquake has been carried out by evaluating the longitudinal displacement of skew bridges.

  • This study deals with controlling the speed of Hydrostatic Transmission (HST) system throuth the control of pumping stroke of positive displacement pump using high-speed solenoid valve controlled by digital closed loop PWM method. The method which was done in this study is as follows: First, we modified original positive displacement pump and designed pumping stroke control system of HST by using the high-speed solenoid valve. Second, after experimenting static and dynamic characteristics on each signal flow, we identified system parameter of approximated model. Finally, to control the speed of HST, we controlled the angle of the swash plate of positive displacement pump by controlling the pressure in the control cylinder chamber. Test which was carried out in the laboratory shows that transient and steady state response could be improved by PID controller.

  • In this study, the shapes of the wheel and rail are represented by using 3-dimensional surface functions with surface parameters and a 3-dimensional wheel-rail contact analysis is presented. A whole numerical solution of wheel-rail contact at tread and flange including 2-point contacts can be achieved with the proposed numerical algorithm. Kinematic characteristics such as variances of vertical displacement and roll angle, and variance of wheel radius difference for arbitrary yaw and lateral displacement of wheelset, are determined for the KTX wheel-rail pair as an example. The condition of yaw and lateral displacement occurring 2-point contacts to analyze derailment are compared between standard and worn wheels. Differences of contact characteristics between curved and straight rails are also analyzed.

  • Ferrule is widely used as fiber optic connecters. In fiber-optic communications, the shape accuracy such as coaxiality and cylindricity of ferrule affects insertion loss. When coaxial grinding of ferrule supported by two pin, pin alignment and chucking accuracy are very important. In this research, the kinematic behavior of the ferrule center is investigated in the case where cone-shaped center pins and round circle holes which make contact with each other near the edge of the holes, using homeogenous coordinate transformation and numerical analysis. The obtained results are as follows: The alignment errors between center holes cause a sinusoidal displacement of ferrule. And the maximum displacement of ferrule centers increase in proportion to the center pin angle. The relationship between center pins displacement in coaxial grinding and grinding accuracy was explained.

  • In this paper, a study was conducted for the optimization through shear web of shape the Edison program in wind power blade. We measured the displacement and stress distribution through two optimization methods to select the model with the smallest displacement and stress values. Before running the analysis, We try to find the inflection point through the shear web of the model and then analyze by introducing the geometric nonlinearity. The first optimization variables are introduced by the pitch angle and three web shapes. Third model such a honeycomb structure is good way to get an advantage for bending test. According to a method of previous optimization, third model is chosen and then the thickness of the web and blade as a variable is introduced, it is extracted as a result of displacement and the maximum stress per mass.

  • This paper focuses on the deformation behavior of tunnels crossing a weak zone in conventional tunneling. A three-dimensional finite element model was adopted that allows realistic modeling of the tunnel excavation and the support installation. Using the 3D FE model, a parametric study was conducted on a number of tunneling cases with emphasis on the spatial characteristics of the weak zone such as the strike and dip angle, and on the initial stress state. The results of the analyses were thoroughly examined so that the three-dimensional tunnel displacements at the tunnel crown and the sidewalls can be related to the spatial characteristic of the weak zone as well as the initial stress state. The results indicate that the effectiveness of the absolute displacement monitoring data as early warning indicators depends strongly on the spatial characteristics of the weak zone. It is also shown that proper interpretation of the absolute monitoring data can provide not only early warning for a weak zone outside the excavation area but also information on the orientation and the extent of the weak zone. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.

  • Based on the displacement general solution of a pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam, the shape function and stiffness matrix are deduced, and a new finite element model is proposed. Comparison analyses are made between the new proposed numerical model based on displacement general solution and the ANSYS solution by Beam188 element based on infinite approach. The results show that developed numerical model is available for the pre-twisted Euler-Bernoulli beam, and that also provide an accuracy finite element model for the numerical analysis. The effects of pre-twisted angle and flexural stiffness ratio on the mechanical property are also investigated.

  • Attempts are being made to provide various tactile feedbacks to user. In particular, a variety of soft actuators are being inserted into the tactile feedback device to give a more flexible, soft and strong stimulation. In this study, a basic study was performed to utilize a hydraulically amplified self-healing electrostatic (HASEL) actuator as a tactile feedback actuator. The HASEL actuator showed great displacement and force with a simple circuit configuration. In particular, by making the actuator in a circular shape, the angle was reduced and the electrode was arranged in a ring shape to maximize the displacement of the central part. As a result, the HASEL actuator showed a displacement difference according to the input waveform. In addition, in order to use it safely as an actuator for tactile feedback, we covered the surface with silicone and confirmed that the actuator works well. Using these actuators, it will be possible to manufacture a lightweight, portable tactile feedback device.

  • The micropile is small diameter pile foundation of which diameter is below 300 mm. This system has been applied to reinforce the foundation structure. In the present study, the effects of embedded conditions of group micropiles were investigated from a series of uplift load tests. For the study, uplift load tests were performed using group micropiles in various pile spacing and installation angle. The increase of uplift resistance and the reduction of uplift displacement were investigated in the tests. As the result, the resistances were principally changed by embedded pile angle, the resistance increase were 33%, 59% and 5% for $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ of embedded pile angle. The uplift displacement reduction increases with lower pile spacing condition and the reduction ratios of uplift displacements in the same spacing condition were 50%, 53%, -45% for $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ of embedded pile angle.

  • Purpose: To evaluate clinical results of the 5th proximal metatarsal intraarticular fracture (Zone I) with displacement treated operatively and to evaluate predisposing factors of the 5th proximal metatarsal fracture (Zone I). Materials and Methods: 11 patients treated for the 5th proximal metatarsal fracture (Zone I) operatively and 10 patients treated conservatively between Jan 2003 and Dec 2005, were followed for more than one year. Functions were graded by AOFAS foot scoring system and union time and postoperative complications were also evaluated. Calcaneal pitch angle was also evaluated. Results: Clinically there were no much difference in results. Clinical points were 94.5 in the operative group and 92.3 in the conservative group. At the last follow-up, the radiographic results showed union in all cases. During the follow-up period, there were no significant complications. But in the conservative group, displaced fracture with calcaneal pitch angle over 30 degree tends to show delayed union and time to loss of pain tends to be prolonged. Conclusion: Calcaneal pitch angle is thought to predisposing factor for 5th metatarsal base fracture. Operative treatment is viable option for the 5th proximal metatarsal intraarticular fracture with displacement and with calcaneal pitch angle over 30 degree. In cases of cavovarus foot deformity, we think operative treatment should be considered with deliberation and long term follow-up study for peroneal tendinopathy should be needed.
