  • High-rise building shapes are changing from orthogonal to irregular form and the current trend is to arrange members in geometric grid-patterns at the perimeter of buildings. This study proposes a simple model for the preliminary design of a hexagrid high-rise building. The size of the cross section is set to be different at each module and hexagrid unit, which is different from the previous studies in which all hexagrid members were the same. To examine the effect of hexagrid size on structural performance, 60-story hexagrid buildings with 1-, 2- and 4-story high modules are designed and analyzed. Maximum lateral displacement, steel tonnage, load carrying percentage of perimeter frame and combined strength ratio are compared for 15 buildings. As the lateral load carrying capacity of hexagrid structure was inferior to a diagrid structural system, proper lateral stiffness should be allocated to the core frame in a hexagrid structure. The best ratio of flexural to shear deformation was 4 and larger unit size was better in considering constructional cost and structural efficiency. As the maximum lateral displacements of the buildings were within 84%~108% of the limit, the proposed method seems to be applicable to preliminary design of hexagrid buildings.

  • The second-order rate constants ($k_N$) have been measured spectrophotometrically for nucleophilic substitution reactions of Y-substituted-phenyl 2-methylbenzoates (6a-e) with a series of cyclic secondary amines in MeCN at $25.0{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. Comparison of the $k_N$ values for the reactions of 4-nitrophenyl 2-methylbenzoate (6d) with those reported previously for the corresponding reactions of 4-nitrophenyl 2-methoxybenzoate (5) reveals that 6d is significantly less reactive than 5, indicating that modification of 2-MeO in the benzoyl moiety of 5 by 2-Me (i.e., $5{\rightarrow}6d$) causes a significant decrease in reactivity. This supports our previous report that aminolysis of 5 proceeds through a six-membered cyclic intermediate, which is highly stabilized through intramolecular H-bonding interactions. The Br${\o}$nsted-type plot for the reactions of 6d with a series of cyclic secondary amines is linear with ${\beta}_{nuc}=0.71$, which appears to be a lower limit of ${\beta}_{nuc}$ for a stepwise mechanism with breakdown of an intermediate ($T^{\pm}$) being rate-determining step (RDS). The Br${\o}$nsted-type plot for the reactions of 6a-e with piperidine is curved, i.e., the slope of Br${\o}$nsted-type plot (${\beta}_{lg}$) decreases from -1.05 to -0.41 as the leaving-group basicity decreases. The nonlinear Br${\o}$nsted-type plot has been taken as evidence for a stepwise mechanism with a change in RDS (e.g., from the $k_2$ step to the $k_1$ process as the leaving-group basicity decreases). Dissection of $k_N$ into the microscopic rate constants associated with the reactions of 6a-e with piperidine (e.g., $k_1$ and $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratio) also supports the proposed mechanism.

  • A numerical method for a 2-D oil boom model considering the flexibility of skirt has been developed The neater is assumed rigid and the skirt is tensioned membrane having a point mass at its end The fluid motion is potential. The kinematic condition which demands the continuity of the displacement is imposed at the joint between the floater and the skirt. The dynamic condition for the point mass is imposed at the bottom end of the skirt. The numerical method is based on the Green's function method in the frame of linear potential theory. It finds it's solution simultaneously from the total system of three equations, integral equation, the equation of motion of the floater and the equilibrium equation of the deformation of the skirt. Integral equation is derived by applying the Green's theorem to radiation potential and Green's function. Proper descretization of those three equations leads to the system of a linear algebraic equation. Due to the flexibility of skirt the motion of floater can be diminished in some range of wave frequency and furthermore the mechanism of resonance of the oil boom can be changed. The motion responses of various oil booms have been compared varying the length of the skirt and the point mass. The numerical method has been validated indirectly from the good correspondence between the motion responses of the flexible skirt model and the rigid skirt model in low frequency limit.

  • 'The facilities standards of water supply' issued by the Ministry of Environment in 2004 indicates that expansion joints cannot be used in welding water supply steel pipes. However, their reason is not clear and it is difficult to confirm the stability of the steel pipe for a water supply pipeline. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not an expansion joint is necessary to improve the stability of water supply in steel pipe through a displacement analysis of the pipework. The test results are as follows. Firstly, it was found that expansion and contraction of the water supply steel pipe (D 2,400 mm) occur repeatedly in 4 cycles per year, and the maximum expansion and contraction amount of the pipe is 13.03 mm in 1.24 km pipelines. Secondly, the thermal stress caused by expansion and contraction of the steel pipe is $13.7{\sim}36.1kgf/cm^2$ according to the burial depth (0~4 m). The main comparison factors to determine the stability of the steel pipe (STWW 400) were the allowable tensile strength and the fatigue limit, which were computed to be $4,100kgf/cm^2$ and $1,840kgf/cm^2$, respectively. Finally, the thermal stress of the steel pipe is very small compared to the allowable tensile stress and fatigue stress. Therefore, thermal stress does not affect the stability of the steel pipe, although the expansion and contraction of the steel pipe occurs by temperature changes. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that expansion joints are not required in water supply steel pipelines.

  • The tendency of more longer span length being required economical in railway bridges is studying about PSC I shaped girder. In this case, it is important to analyze and choose the effective girder section for stiffness of bridge. This study investigates the dynamic properties and safety of PSC I shaped girder being used wide upper flange whose selection based on radii and efficiency factor of flexure for railway bridge in different span type. In addition, 40m PSC Box girder bridge adopted in Honam high speed railway is further analyzed to compare dynamic performance of PSC I shaped girder railway bridge with same span length. Time history response is acquired based on the mode superposition method. Static analysis is also analyzed using standard train load combined with the impact factor. Consequently, the result met limit values in every case including vertical displacement, acceleration and distort.

  • Most structures are expected to deform beyond the limit of linearly elastic behavior when subjected to strong ground motion. Seismic evaluation of structure requires an estimation of the structural performance in terms of displacement demand imposed by earthquakes on the structure. The nonlinear response history analysis(NRHA) among various nonlinear analysis methods is the most accurate to compute seismic performance of structures, but it is time-consuming and necessitate more efforts. The nonlinear approximate methods, which is more practical and reliable tools for predicting seismic behavior of structures, are extensively studied. Among them, the capacity spectrum method(CSM) is conceptually simple, but the iterative procedure is time-consuming and may sometimes lead to no solution or multiple solutions. This paper considers a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of mixed building structures without iterative computations, given dynamic property T from stiffness skeleton curve and nonlinear pseudo acceleration $A_{y}$/g and/or ductility ratio $\mu$ from response spectrum. The nonlinear response history analysis has been performed and analyzed with various earthquakes for estimation of reliability and practicality of NDSM with mixed building structures.

  • Seismic performance evaluation of structure requires an estimation of the structural performance in terms of displacement demand imposed by earthquakes on the structure. Incremental Dynamic Analysis(IDA) is a analysis method that has recently emerged to estimate structural performance under earthquakes. This method can obtained the entire range of structural performance from the linear elastic stage to yielding and finally collapse by subjecting the structure to increasing levels of ground acceleration. Most structures are expected to deform beyond the limit of linearly elastic behavior when subjected to strong ground motion. The uncoupled modal response history analysis(UMRHA) is a method which can find the nonlinear reponse of the structures for ESDF from the pushover curve using NRHA or response spectrum. The direct spectrum analysis(DSA) is approximate nonlinear method to evaluate nonlinear response of structures, without iterative computations, given by the structural linear vibration period and yield strength from the pushover analysis. In this study, the practicality and the reliability of seismic performance of approximate nonlinear methods for incremental dynamic analysis of mixed building structures are to be compared.

  • In this study, an experimental study on the tensile properties of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high strength concrete(UHSC) with a standard compressive strength of 180MPa was performed. Steel fibers with a volume ratio of 1% were mixed to prepare direct tensile strength specimens and prism specimens for the three-point bending test. The fabricated specimens were set up in the middle section of the specimen to induce cracks, and the test was carried out according to each evaluation method. First, the stress-strain curves were analyzed by performing direct tensile strength tests to investigate the behavior characteristics of concrete after cracking. In addition, the load-CMOD curve was obtained through the three-point bending test, and the inverse analysis was performed to evaluate the stress-strain curve. Tensile behavior characteristics of the direct tensile test and the three-point bending test of the indirect test were similar. In addition, the tensile stress-strain curve modeling presented in the SC structural design guidelines was performed, and the comparative analysis of the measured and predicted values was performed. When the material reduction factor of 1.0 was applied, the predicted value was similar to the measured value up to the strain of 0.02, but when the material reduction factor of 0.8 was applied, the predicted value was close to the lower limit of the measured value. In addition, when the strain was greater than 0.02, the predicted value by SC structural design guideline to underestimated the measured value.

  • Recently, according to the development of measurement techniques, it has become possible to take complicated and time-consuming field measurements in a simple and convenient manner. In this background, this study estimated the tension of cables under ambient vibration using minimized measurement and signal processing. The VBDM using video-only by low-cost equipment was used as a minimized measurement. An estimation of the natural frequency using the mirror frequency concept was also proposed to solve the shortage of frequency band in this case. Furthermore, the FDD method was adopted for a natural frequency estimation in the ambient vibration related to field application. Experimental studies using a cable-stayed bridge model were carried out to examine the properties of the mirror frequency and the applicability of FDD with the proposed minimized system. The results showed that FDD for ambient vibration also works properly in an estimation of the natural frequency using the minimized system. In addition, the mirror frequency concept can allow a high natural frequency estimation even in a distorted signal by low-speed recording, which can overcome the limit of the minimized system. Overall, the proposed minimized system can be effective for the tension estimations of a cable under ambient vibration.

  • The number of deaths for railway traffic accidents is mainly caused by working close to the track, or when unauthorized passage pass through the track. The safety fences are being used to ensure safety for workers close to the track, and to improve the efficiency of the work, without interfering with the passage of trains. However, a safety fence for railway tracks needs to be examined to see if it will interfere with the passage of trains. The purpose of this study is to analyze the safe distance between train and safety fence developed in Korea. In addition, the lateral load condition of wind pressure by trains is estimated and numerical analysis is carried out according to the installation intervals of railway safety fences. It has been confirmed that the proper spacing between the train and the railway safety fence should be at least 200 mm from the vehicle limit, and that the proper spacing of railway safety fence must be calculated in consideration of the wind pressure by trains.
