One of the recent safety issues in the pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) is the cracking of the feeder pipe. Because of the limited accessibility to the cracked region and a high dose of radiation exposure, it is difficult to inspect all the pipes with the conventional ultrasonic method. In order to solve this problem, a long-range guided wave technique has been developed. A computer program to calculate the dispersion curves in the pipe was developed and the dispersion curves for the feeder pipes in PHWR plants were determined. Several longitudinal and/or flexural modes were selected from the review of the dispersion curves and an actual experiment has been carried out with the specific alignment of the piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers. They were confirmed as L(0,1)) and/or flexural modes(F(m,2)) by the short time Fourier transformation(STFT) and were sensitive to the circumferential cracks, but not to the axial cracks in the pipe. An electromagnetic acoustic transducers(EMAT) was designed and fabricated for the generation and reception of the torsional guided wave. The axial cracks were detected by a torsional mode(T(0,1)) generated by the EMAT.

Nondestructive damage sensing and mechanical properties for thermal treated carbon nanotube(CNT) and nanofiber(CNF)/epoxy composites were investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Carbon black (CB) was used only for the comparison. Electro-micromechanical techniques were applied to obtain the fiber damage and stress transferring effect of carbon nanocomposites with their contents. Thermal treatment and temperature affected on apparent modulus and electrical properties on nanocomposites due to enhanced inherent properties of each CNMs. Coefficient of variation (COV) of volumetric electrical resistance can be used to obtain the dispersion degree indirectly for various CNMs. Dispersion and surface modification are very important parameters to obtain improved mechanical and electrical properties of CNMs for multifunctional applications. Further optimized functionalization and dispersion conditions will be investigated for the following work continuously.

The modified in-line mixer which was suggested in this study for small water treatment facilities was evaluated on the performance of coagulation. For the objectives of this research, computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation was applied for analysis of flow characteristics within the modified in-line mixer. For verifying the results of CFD simulation, wet tests for the pilot plant were conducted. The wet test was to measure the actual coagulant dispersion distribution on the overall cross-section at a distance of 5.5D from the chemical injection point. From the results of CFD simulation and wet test, it was shown that the coagulant dispersion within the modified in-line mixer was occurred more uniformly than within the existing PDM(Pump diffusion Mixer). The results have confirmed the modified in-line mixer had several advantages compared with the existing PDM in terms of dispersion efficiency.
Studies were performed on preparation of organic-inorganic hybrid silica dye in a dispersing ink system. The silica was subjected to surface modification using 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) in order to promote the chemical reactivity of the raw silica. On the surfaces of the aminosilane-functionalised silica, red vinylsulfone-containing azo dye was adsorbed. The dye was found to have chemically reacted with the aminosilane-grafted silica surface, which was proven by FT-IR spectra. Studies on morphology and microstructure were performed employing scanning electron microscopy. The SEM micrographs and particle size distributions showed that a homogeneous pigment can be obtained employing silica as a core. Particle size distribution was also examined using the technique of dynamic light scattering. The ensuing pigment was subjected to various physicochemical evaluation such as inkjet property, storage stability, color change as inkjet ink using printer, spectrophotometric, microscopic techniques. Studies on hybrid dyes from the silica surface demonstrated that, in general, stable pigments for inkjet dispersion ink were obtained.

Various studies have been conducted to improve silica dispersion of silica filled tire tread compounds; among them, silica wet masterbatch (WMB) technology is known to be suitable for manufacturing silica filled compounds that have high silica content and high dispersibility. Till now, the WMB study is focused on the natural rubber (NR) or emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber (ESBR) that does not have a silica-affinity functional group, and a study of NR or ESBR having a silica-affinity functional group is still not well known. Unlike the dry masterbatch technology, the WMB technology can solve the problems associated with the high Mooney viscosity when applied to silica-friendly rubber. However, a coagulant suitable for each functional group has not yet been determined. Therefore, in this study, different coagulant applied silica WMB was prepared by applying calcium chloride, sulfuric acid, acetic acid, and propionic acid by using a carboxyl group functionalized reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer ESBR. The evaluation of the WMB compounds revealed that the calcium chloride added WMB compound showed excellent silica dispersion, abrasion resistance, and rolling resistance.
Recently, interest in maintenance has been increasing due to the enlargement and aging of infra structures. Therefore, a new paradigm is required to secure and improve the durability of structures differentiated from the past. Accordingly, research on smart concrete incorporating the concept of self-healing into concrete is being actively conducted. In this study, the crack healing performance and durability performance of self-healing concrete applied with a hydrogel containing biomineral-forming microorganisms were evaluated. As a result of evaluating the dispersion of the hydrogel in concrete, it was confirmed that the hydrogel was well distributed in concrete matrix with a dispersion coefficient of 0.35 to 0.46. The crack healing performance evaluation was verified by a water permeability test, and showed a recovery rate of 95% or more at the age of 28 days, confirming the applicability of self-healing concrete. The durability performance of self-healing concrete was evaluated in terms of resistance to penetration of chloride ion and freezing and thawing. Regardless of the mixing of the hydrogel, the same level of durability performance was shown for various compressive strength level. Therefore, it was confirmed that the microbial admixture did not affect concrete durability. In the future, long-term crack healing performance and durability verification studies should be supplemented.

Oral mucous membrane test using Syrian hamsters was performed to evaluate the reliability as a model system for the assessment of the potentially irritating substances intended for the mucous membranes, and to determine the irritating potential of a new emulsion-type formulated toothpaste. After test substances were implanted into the cheek pouches of hamsters with diluents (20 mg/kg) under pento-barbital sodium anesthesia, we made the comparison in irritation between emulsion-type and dispersion-type of triclosan (TCS) formulations in the range of 0.2% to 0.3%. The emulsion-type formulations using non-ionic surfactant showed less mucosal lesion than other commercial toothpastes with 0.3% TCS, or dispersion-type ones. However, no significant difference in irritation was detected between 0.2% and 0.3% TCS. We report that this hamster cheek pouch method could be a reliable approach for the evaluation slight difference in the irritating potentials of cosmetics and hygiene products intended for the lips or other mucous membranes, and this method showed that the new emulsion-type formulation significantly lowered the TCS-induced toxicity, compared with other commercial toothpastes.

This study is to examine a change of quality and a material performance of fiber reinforced cement composite for mass production. It is necessary to make Strain-hardening cementitious composite(SHCC) by batcher plant for ready-mixed concrete and use the performance of SHCC which made based on laboratory level. This study makes a comparative performance of press and mechanics that is the property of Strain-hardening by direct tension. In case of making by batcher plant. This experiment has demonstrated that even if it takes long after being mixed small and compared with the one which made based on laboratory, it has a tendency to be dissatisfied with fiver's dispersion and lower its performance of Strain-hardening. The reason why the material performance of SHCC for mass production went down is through SHCC that mixed sometimes matrix's viscosity and fiber's dispersion.
Dispersion condition of Si3N4 powder in molten wax was established by comparing relative viscosity of mixture with 20 vol% solids loading, while the evaluation of compression-molded sample was demonstrated as an effective method for developing a binder system for injection molding. The best dispersion of Si3N4 powder in molten wax was achieved when Si3N4 powder was treated with 5% stearic acid, and the critical powder volume fraction was determined to be about 0.51 from density measurement of compression-molded samples. Samples containing polar secondary binder showed markedly improved green strength, higher thermal expansion and increased wicking rate in the early stage.
A prompt subsurface runoff producing mechanism whih creaters a depletion curve of direct runoff hydrograph is simulated by a dead zone dispersion model technique. Runoff processes are carried out by routing of the outflow resulted from previous linear channel and effective rainfall from its corresponding subwatershed through a series of conceptual linear channels representing subwatersheds of a catchment. Working rules are explained for evaluation the model parameters such as translatory velocity, diffusive factor, and parameters concerning the infiltration and relative magnitude of the prompt subsurface flow region.
