Preparation and characterization of carbon-slurry fuel with high dispersion have been carried out. Carbon-slurry fuel was obtained by mixing Jet A-1 liquid fuel with appropriate carbon powders and additives. Dispersion of carbon in Jet A-1 was affected by various factors such as mixing temperature, characteristics of carbon powders, and type and amount of additives. Among these factors, the stability of the slurry fuel was most dependent on the type of additive. A variety of additives such as anionic, cationic, and nonionic additives was tested for the dispersion of carbon in Jet A-1. It was found that anionic additives based on sodium salts showed the highest dispersion of carbon-slurry fuels. The degree of dispersion could be monitored by measuring the luminosity.

For the preparation of Aluminum-slurry fuel, the effects of process parameters on the aluminum dispersion stability in the liquid fuel have been investigated. The dispersion stability of aluminum-slurry fuels could be monitored by measurements through Turbiscan using the scattering of the Laser. Through the application of various additives, TPAB (Tetrapropyl ammonium bromide) showed more reasonable performance than others.
The effect of organic processing parameters on the dispersion stability of the BaTiO$_3$-based dielectric particles and borosilicate glass particulate suspensions was investigated in a system where organic solvents, dispersant, binder and modifier were used as processing additives in a low temperature cofired ceramic fabrication processes. Two- and three-component organic solvents were used to disperse ceramic particles and it was found the better stability in the particulate suspension prepared in a bi-solvent, which was consists of toluene and ethanol in a non-azeotropic composition. The addition amount of organic additives had a great impact on dispersion in the present investigation. The flow curves of the suspensions prepared with binder and modifier were fitted according to the power-law equation, which indicates that the internal structure of the suspension could be disturbed under the applied shear stress. Finally, the LTCC green tapes were successfully tape-cast based upon the optimum formulation of LTCC suspension and its microstructure was compared with that of the hard-agglomerates.
The fundamental dispersion property of Si2N4 and a combination of AlN and Nd2O3 as sintering additives in a variety of organic solvents such as alcohols, hydrocarbons, ketones, and ethers was investigated. The stabilization mechanism and interaction between organic functional groups of the various organic additives were studied to clarify the dispersibility of the ceramic particles in the nonaqueous suspending medium. characterization of the suspensions was based mainly on electrokinetic sonic amplitude(ESA) measurements and the flow curves obtained from the rheological studies as well as estimated Hamaker constants. It was found that the contribution of electrostatic repulsive forces to the Si3N4, AlN and Nd2O3 stabilization in organic media is appreciably greater than anticipated and is dependent on the physicochemical properties of organic solvents.

For the preparation of carbon-slurry fuel, the effects of process parameters on the carbon dispersion stability in the liquid fuel have been investigated. The dispersion stability of carbon-slurry fuels could be monitored by measurements of particle size and carbon contents in the different positions, and observation of dispersion states after centrifuging. Through the application of various additives, it was found that NB463S84 based on polyolefin succinimde showed the best dispersion and longest stability life of carbon-slurry fuel. Also, PIBSI (polyisobutenyl succimide) with the similar functional groups to NB463S84 was effectively synthesized and same dispersion stability was verified by application to carbon-slurry fuel. Finally, the possibility of practical use of carbon-slurry fuels was confirmed by application of the mixing conditions obtained from g scale to kg scale preparation.
To expand the viewing angle of vertical alignment liquid crystal display (VA-LCD), a wide-band compensation film has been newly developed. VA-LCD needs a retardation film with improved oblique viewing property. The retardation film for VA-LCD has been fabricated by solvent casting and subsequent drawing triacetylcellulose (TAC) containing optical additives. Here, optical birefringence and wavelength dispersion of the retardation film strongly depend on the chemical structures of optical additives. Utilizing quantum mechanical computation, the polarizing anisotropy of retardation film was calculated with respect to additives. It is also realized that the wavelength dispersion of polarizing anisotropy depends on the type and location of substituent to the selected main isomer. When two propionates are substituted to the meta position of the selected main isomer, the wavelength dispersion of polarizing anisotropy shows the most gentle slop, which is well matched with the experimental results. The most gentle slop of wavelength dispersion means that the viewing angle characteristics of LCD are less influenced according to the wavelength of light source of LCD, and it's possible to make better image quality than the present level.

In manufacture of slurry fuel, the effects of process parameters on the carbon dispersion stability have been investigated. The particle size and contents of the carbon slurry taken from 3 (top, medium, bottom) positions in fuel reservoir were analyzed to estimate the dispersion of the carbon in Jet A-1. Through the application of various additives, it was found that NB463S84 additive showed the best dispersion and stability of carbon at accelerated gravity condition. The mixer performance was compared by the observation of height change of carbon-containing layer and measurement of particle sizes at the same conditions. Application of the mixing conditions obtained from the lab-scale to bench scale manufacture confirmed the practical feasibility of our research.

In this study, the dispersion ability of powder in low viscosity solubilization system that depends on variety and amount of additives and powders was investigated. A PMMA powder shows outstanding dispersion ability because of its repulsive force of partially charged chain and low density of porous structure. A sample, which contains salts, showed better dispersion tendency than a sample without any additives. The dispersion ability was quantity of salts dependent. Furthermore, a sample with divalent ion salts, like $MgSO_4$, showed better dispersion tendency than that of monovalent ion salts, like NaCl or KCl. The reason for the better dispersion tendency was due to the existence of ionized salts around the powders which significantly improves repulsive force between powders and consequently reduces powder aggregation. The sample with chelating agent, like EDTA as an additive, had improved dispersion ability. EDTA chelates and blocks metal cation therefore anion's character is maximized and repulsive force between powders is improved. As a result, salts and EDTA help to improve the powder dispersion ability and the stability of product.

The composite electroplating is accomplished by adding inert materials during the electroplating. Permalloy is the term for Ni-Fe alloy and it is used for industrial applications due to its high magnetic permeability. Microhardness for microdevices is enhanced after composite coating and it increases the life cycle. However, the hydroxyl group on the silica makes their surface susceptible to moisture and it causes the silica nanoparticles to be agglomerated in the aqueous solution. The agglomeration problem causes poor dispersion which eventually interrupts uniform deposition of silica nanoparticles. In this study, the dispersion of silica nanoparticles in the permalloy electroplated layer is reported with variation of additives and sonication time. Longer sonication period guaranteed better silica nanopowder dispersion and sonication period also influenced on composition of deposits. The amount of silica nanopowder codeposition and surface morphologies were influenced with variation of additives. In alkaline bath, smooth surface morphology and relatively high contents of silica nanopowder codeposition were obtained with addition of sodium lauryl sulfate.

The primary aim of this study is to investigate new semi-abrasive free slurry including acid colloidal silica and hydrogen peroxide for copper chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP). In general, slurry for copper CMP consists of colloidal silica as an abrasive, organic acid as a complex-forming agent, hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent, a film forming agent, a pH control agent and several additives. We developed new semi-abrasive free slurry (SAFS) including below 0.5% acid colloidal silica. We evaluated additives as stabilizers for hydrogen peroxide as well as accelerators in tantalum nitride CMP process. We also estimated dispersion stability and Zeta potential of the acid colloidal silica with additives. The extent of enhancement in tantalum nitride CMP was verified through anelectrochemical test. This approach may be useful for the application of single and first step copper CMP slurry with one package system.
