  • The dispersing performance of oligomer-type anionic surfactants ($C_mD-Na$), cooligomers of diethylester maleate and alkylvinylether of different alkyl chain lengths or polymerization degree were studied on the aqueous suspension of iron dxide or titanium dioxide particles which are hydrophilic pigments. The dispersion behavior of oligomer-type surfactants for these dispersoids, although anion charges on the surface of pigments particles showed different dispersing properties, was dependent upon the side alkyl chain length. Oligomer-type surfactants having more than $C_8$ side alkyl chain exhibited large dispersing action for relatively hydrophobic ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ and Anatase $TiO_2$ in the concentration range of more than 0.1% oligomer-type surfactant solutions.

  • The dispersing behaviors of oligomer-type anionic surfactants, cooligomers of diethyl maleate(CmD-Na) or maleic anhydride (CmM-Na) and $C_4{\sim}C_{16}$ alkyl vinylether, which have a different alkyl chain length of the hydrophobic group or degree of polymerization, were studied on the aqueous suspension of ${\alpha}-$ and ${\beta}-$ copper phthalocyanine and carbon black particles. In case of the side alkyl chain length of $C_4{\sim}C_{10}$ of CmD-Na, the dispersing actions were good in the concentration range of 0.01 to 0.1%. Especially, side alkyl groups played an important role in the orientation adsorption on the surface of pigment particles, and oligomers having smaller degrees of polymerization were more effective in the dispersing action, but did not affect the dispersability of carbon black.

  • "The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)" is a very famous medical book. It was compiled by the medical officers of the Cheong(淸, Qing) Dynasty, especially headed by Ogyeom(吳謙, Wuqian). "The Elimination & Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)"that forms one part of "The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)", is a collection of famous notes about important prescriptions. Many parts of "The Elimination & Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)" were quoted from "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modern Times(古今名醫方論)". The first part of the vol. Ⅱ of "The Elimination & Supplement about the Famous Prescription Comments(刪補名醫方論)"mainly describes about the prescriptions of elevating Yanggi[升陽], which were invented by Igo(李杲, Ligao), a famous physician of the Geum(金, Jin) Dynasty. The treatments were five and three of them were quoted from "The Famous Prescription Comments on Ancient and Modern Times(古今名醫方論)". The basic rule of herbal combination of these prescriptions is a combination of herbs of strengthening-gi[補氣] and dispersing herbs[發散藥]. If the dispersing herbs[發散藥] is used with the herbs of strengthening-gi[補氣藥], they elevate Yanggi(陽氣) together.

Synthesis of Polyester-Polyamine Dispersants and Their Carbon Dispersing Properties (폴리에스테르-폴리아민 분산제의 합성 및 카본 분산 특성)

  • We prepared polyester-polyamines to improve the effect of carbon black dispersibility for use in thermal transfer ink, and synthesized polymeric dispersing agents by two-step reactions. In the first step, we made polyester by polycondensing 1,6-hexanediol and adipic acid. The resulting polymers had carboxylic acid, which was linked with polyamine via an acid-base reaction. We then characterized the polyester-polyamine structure by NMR spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). We also determined the basic characterizations such as total acid numbers (TAN) (5.0-67.5 mgKOH/g), hydroxyl values (27.1-67.5 mgKOH/g), and molar masses ($M_n=1.6-8.4kg\;mol^{-1}$) for the polyester and total base numbers (TBN) (15.3-57.1 mgKOH/g), hydroxyl values (33.0-79.8 mgKOH/g), and nitrogen contents (1.02-3.48%) for the polyester-polyamine polymers. We thus prepared thermal transfer ink using carbon blacks and the polyester-polyamine dispersing agents, and evaluated the resulting mixtures for printability, adhesive force, storage stability, ink appearance, ink gloss, and processability. These mixtures showed significant dispersibility for carbon black in the ink. Thus, we concluded that the dispersibility of the polymeric materials depended on the polyamine structure and the hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity distribution of the polymeric dispersants.

An Experimental Study on Thermal Conductivity Change of Water-Al2O3 Nanofluid with the Elapse of Time, Stirring, and Adding Dispersing Agent (시간경과, 교반 및 분산제 첨가에 따른 물-Al2O3 나노유체 열전도도 변화에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • A water-$Al_2O_3$ nanofluid was manufactured, and its thermal conductivity was measured in this study. The measurement was performed at volumetric concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 3%, and the nanoparticle sizes were 20 nm and 70 nm. Experimental test equipment, using the transient hot wire method, was installed to measure the thermal conductivity of the nanofluid, and the measured results were confirmed by measuring pure water with a measurement error of 0.92% at $20^{\circ}C$. The thermal conductivity enhancement ranged from 4.8% to 13.6% for the 20 nm particle size, and from 3.1% to 8.8% for the 70 nm particle size at a concentration range of 0.5% to 3%. The enhancement increased with a decrease in particle size and an increase in concentration. With the elapse of time after manufacturing the nanofluid, the thermal conductivity enhancement decreased significantly from 5 to 9 h, and this trend was measured under all of the measurement conditions. After 24 h, the enhancement ranged from 1.2% to 3.5% for the 20 nm particles, and from 0.6% to 2.3% for the 70 nm particles. The enhancement trends with the elapse of time were almost identical with and without stirring the nanofluid. SDBS (Sodium Dodecyl Benzene Sulfonate) was added as a dispersing agent, and the decrease in the thermal conductivity enhancement was delayed.

  • We used the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process to fabricate a glass composite and investigated the EPD parameters to find the optimum deposition time by understanding the relationship among the process parameters of zeta potential (ZP), pH, deposition yield and saturation point. A binder and a dispersing agent were mixed properly with glass frit ($0.2{\sim}25{\mu}m$, d50=$8.77{\mu}m$) in an ethyl alcohol medium for the preparation of the slurry. The pH and ZP were in an inverse relationship to each other due to the generation of $H_3O^+$ ions with the addition of the dispersing agent in the slurry. The acidic nature of the dispersing agent was resulted in a decrease of the pH and an increase of the ZP. Otherwise, the pH increased with the addition of the glass frit in the slurry because $H_3O^+$ ions were absorbed on the glass frit. Therefore, the $OH^-$ ions correspondingly increased. The saturation point of EPD was strongly correlated with the variation of the pH in the slurry; this is caused by a chemical reaction between the ethyl alcohol and the ions that make up the glass frit. An adjustment of the pH variation and the saturation point in the slurry can be established with respect to the optimum deposition time in the slurry.

  • Copper fine particles, ranging from $0.11{\mu}m$ to $0.64{\mu}m$ in average size, were prepared by a chemical reduction method using hydrazine ($N_2H_4$) as a reduction agent in waste copper solutions. The effect of the amount of hydrazine addition was investigated on the properties of the obtained powders. Also, the effect of the addition of dispersing agents [Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)] during particle synthesis was studied. The powders, obtained from 1 M waste copper solutions, showed the mixtures of Cu and $Cu_2O$ crystals at low hydrazine addition amounts of 0.8 mol and 1.0 mol, while those exhibited pure Cu crystals at adequate hydrazine addition amount of 0.12 mol. The average size of the Cu powders decreased with increasing the concentrations of hydrazine and dispersing agents. The addition of PVA to the solutions as a dispersing agent was more effective than that of PVP in preventing the aggregation of particles.

  • This experiment was aimed at selecting the most suitable dispersing agent to the Korean soils. The particle size distribution of 18 soil samples representing the great soil groups in Korea was analysed with 5 different dispersing agents by pipette-method. Passing percent of 0.05, 0.02 and 0.002mm in diameter was used for the comparision of the dispersion capacity of chemical agents. The results obtained are as follows; 1. The influence of chemical agents on dispersion seemed to be greater to finer soil particles. The passing percents of 0.002mm showed a great differences according to the chemical agents used, while little differences was observed in those of 0.05mm. 2. It was showed that sodium pyrophosphate had the highest dispersion capacity for the most of Korean soils, the dispersion capacity of sodium hexametaphosphate was also high enough except for volcanic ash soils. 3. It was recommendable that sodium hexametaphosphate could widely be used as a dispersing agent in the routine analysis of soil particle size distribution except for the Volcanic ash soils. 4. The dispersion of Volcanic ash soils was rather poor when chemical agents used. Therefore, special care should be taken for the dispersion of allophane soils.

Fabrication and Mechanical Properties of Cordierite/$ZrO_2$ Composites by Pressureless Sintering

  • Cordierite/ZrO$_2$ composites with 5 to 25wt% ZrO$_2$ were fabricated by prssureless sintering, and their densification behavior, fracture strength, fracture toughness, microstructure and thermal expansion behavior were studied. The ZrO$_2$ addition into cordierite matrix affects the densification behavior and mechanical properties of the composites. By dispersing 25wt% ZrO$_2$, densified cordierite/ZrO$_2$ composite with a relative density of 98.5% was obtained at optimum sintering condition of 144$0^{\circ}C$/2H. Both fracture strength and toughness were increased from 140 to 290MPa and from 1.6 to 3.5 MPam$\frac{1}{2}$, respectively, by dispersing 25wt% ZrO$_2$ into the cordierite matrix. ZrO$_2$ particles were homogenously dispersed into cordierite matrix, which intragranular particles were fine(<100nm) and intergranular particles were coarse. The toughening mechanisms in the present composites were mainly attributed to martensitic transformation toughening. Then, the addition of ZrO$_2$ is likely to have little deleterious effect upon thermal expansion coefficient of cordierite.

  • The sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ fatty acid vinyl ester oligomers, which are oligomer type surfactants were prepared by polymerization with fatty acid vinyl acetate. The ${\alpha}-sulfonation$ of fatty acid vinyl ester oligomers were carried by direct addition of sulfur trioxide. The dispersing performance of oligomer type anionic surfactants and sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) in the aqueous suspension of iron oxide and titanium dioxide particles was evaluated by particle size distribution and zeta-potential measurement. As results, the particles of iron oxide and titanium dioxide were flocculated by addition of small amount of oligomer type anionic surfactants and sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS), then the flocks redispersed by more addition of oligomer type anionic surfactants and SDS. The flocculation, redispersion process was observed in lower concentration range of oligomer type anionic surfactants than SDS. Especially, the dispersing action of sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ palmitic acid vinyl ester oligomer was better than sodium ${\alpha}-sulfo$ lauric acid vinyl ester oligomer.
