Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of academic stress and self-control ability on temporomandibular disorder (TMD) of adolescents. Methods: Participants were 1,112 teenagers who were 1st grade students of middle and high school. After checking their academic stress and self-control ability through a self-administrated questionnaire, the students were examined their TMD by two trained dentists. We drew a comparison the level of their academic stress and self-control ability between the students with and without TMD. We divided them to four groups according to the level of academic stress and self-control. And we checked prevalence of TMD in each level. Results: The group of students with TMD was higher academic stress score level than the students without TMD (p<0.05). And they had lower self-control score level than the students without TMD (p<0.05). Even if they were under the same academic stress, the group of students with higher self-control score was less TMD prevalence than the students with lower score. Conclusions: Academic stress makes adolescents to increase TMD and high ability of self-control makes them to decrease it. And these tendencies are seemed to have a great influence on young male student.
Purpose: This study aims to identify gender-based differences in factors related to smartphone overdependence among middle school students. Methods: The subjects of the study were middle school students who participated in the 16th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (2020). Frequency analysis, the Rao-Scott χ2 test, and multiple logistic regression were performed using SPSS 27.0. Results: Identified risk factors were grade level, self-reported health, self-reported happiness, loneliness, smoking, drinking, poor sleep quality, physical activity, and generalized anxiety disorder, which were commonly found in all participants. Additionally, stress was found related only in boys, while the residential area and depression showed associations only in girls. In particular, the more severe was the level of generalized anxiety disorder, the higher was the risk ratio of the high-risk group, compared to the potential-risk group. Conclusion: Based on the findings of the study, a customized strategy that considers gender differences should be developed in order to prevent smartphone overdependence in middle school students.
In this study, 1 have analyzed the state of the use of information technology by the at-risk children who are residing in Husan metropolitan area. The ultimate goal of this study is to help ensure the healthy development of the children and improve the quality of their lives in this information-oriented society. For this research, 1 surveyed 183 children living in an institution or a low-income family in Busan metropolitan area. The survey questionnaire was designed to obtain information on the respondents, socio-demographic characteristics, computer-related conditions of the immediate and social environments, patterns of computer and Internet use, their experience and degree of so called, Net-generation syndrome, Internet addiction disorder, changes in social and familial life caused by Internet use, and exposure to pornographic materials. The results show that 95.9 % of at-risk children in Husan own a computer, 60.9 % of those computers being Pentium Ⅲ. A majority of the children (74.9 %) are connected to Internet at a high-speed, using such devices as LAN, ADSL or cables. About seventy-six percent of the children have used a PC and Internet less than two years. In other words, a majority of them have not used those for a long period of time. The main results of the research are summarized in the following: There is a significant difference among at-risk children in terms of experiences in computer and Internet use according to their grade levels. There is a gender difference in the amount of time spent on computer and Internet. Boys spend more time every week on computer and Internet than girls do. There is a significant difference in the pattern of computer and Internet use, according to the type of their risk, and grade level. The so-called 'Net Generation Syndrome' is not serious in this group. A majority of the at-risk children think that Internet is more interesting than TV. They hardly shop on Internet, and they don think the advertisements on Internet are a serious problem. Also, unlike many people assumptions, their desire to communicate through on-line chatting was very low. They do not tend to buy computer game programs, and Internet Addiction Disorder was not pronounced among them. The at-risk children rarely had an exposure to pornographic materials in the cyber space. However, the exposure was more frequent for institutionalized children than children in low-income families. These results point to a need for a policy to improve the welfare of at-risk children and guarantee their right to information.
This study investigated the clinical effect of Korean medicine treatments on two patients who experienced gastrointestinal symptoms with anxiety disorder. The patients were treated with herbal medicine (Yukgunja-tang, Banhabakchulchunma-tang) and acupuncture for 11 days and 26 days, respectively. The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS) scores on the day of hospital admission and after treatment were compared; both the BAI and GSRS scores decreased after treatment. Moreover, the grade of the gastrointestinal symptoms changed from severe to mild or none. Therefore, these cases are useful for describing Korean medicine treatments for anxiety disorders in patients who experience gastrointestinal symptoms. However, additional case reports and studies are be needed in the future to confirm these findings.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to understand the level and patterns of college adjustment, major satisfaction, academic engagement, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study examined the factors influencing adaptation to college life. Methods: This study was approved by the institutional review board of 00 university. We analyzed 166 survey data responses collected by distributing questionnaires from June 1 to July 2, 2020. Statistical product and service solutions version 23.0 was used for statistical analyses. For college adjustment, there was a significant difference in the average score according to major grades. Academic engagement showed a significant difference in the average score according to the college type and grade. Major satisfaction, college adjustment, and academic motivation showed significant positive correlations among the variables, whereas ADHD, major satisfaction, and college adjustment showed a significant negative correlation. Multiple regression analysis revealed that major satisfaction (p<0.001) and academic motivation (p<0.001) were factors affecting college adjustment (p<0.05). Conclusions: It is necessary to develop and apply specific and systematic adaptation programs to improve the understanding, control, and guidance methods for college students and to promote human relations, such as school life and social life.
Introduction: Stroke refers to a sudden brain disease that results in disorders in the anatomy of the brain. The cause is a sudden circulatory disorder of the cerebrovascular system that creates a consciousness disorder and hemiplegia. Despite aggressive treatment after the onset, stroke is a social problem because the patient has difficulty in recovering from sequelae that can include limb movement disorders, language disorders, and emotional disorders. In this study, we describe the effect of traditional Korean medicine treatment on the sequelae in a subacute cerebral infarction patient admitted to a Korean medical hospital. Case presentation: A 67-year-old male patient was diagnosed with cerebral infarction circa 2005, and his condition had not improved. Around March 15, 2018, he experienced the sudden onset of a cerebral infarction in his daily life. This was confirmed by a brain MRI, and he was hospitalized at other hospitals, but he showed no improvement. We conducted a manual muscle test (MMT) to evaluate the patient's exercise and strength. His gait level was measured to evaluate his degree of walking. He was treated with Bojungikgi-tang and acupuncture twice a day. After 34 days of inpatient treatment, the patient's exercise strength improved from Grade 2+~Grade 3 to Grade 3+ determined by the MMT, and his walking ability improved from Gait Level 3 to Gait Level 4. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment can help treat patients with hemiplegia due to cerebral infarction.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the patterns of internet usage among 5th and 6th grade elementary students, and analyze the correlation between the internet obsessive disorder and parent-child attachment. Method: A total of 303 elementary students in Seoul, Suwon, Ulsan, and Kwangjoo area participated in this study, and responded to self-administrated questionnaires. Results: With regard to the internet addiction, 2.7% of participants were classified as being in a high risk group, and 5.3% were classified as a potential risk group with boys at greater risk than girls, and 6th graders showing higher internet addiction scores than 5th graders. There were significant negative correlations between internet addiction and father-child attachment (r=-.122, p=.040), and mother-child attachment (r=-.154, p=.009). Conclusion: To prevent internet addiction in elementary school students, promoting parent-child interaction needs to be emphasized. More studies for finding affecting variables on internet addiction would be necessary, and different preventive approaches according to gender and grade should be introduced.
Background: Scapular winging is a rare disorder that is commonly caused by nerve damage of the dorsal scapular nerve, spinal accessory nerve, or the long thoracic nerve. This affects the scapulohumeral rhythm which may cause abnormal kinetic motion of the shoulder. The purpose of this case report is to describe a self-exercise oriented management incorporating shoulder strengthening to reduce symptoms in a shoulder pain patient with winging scapular. Methods: A 45 year old male patient complained of pain in his both shoulders without any trauma. Shoulders were treated with steroid injections for supraspinatus tendonitis, but although pain improved to some extent, pain and disability continued for 3 months. Both shoulders had pain, decreased active range of motions, muscles weakness, and scapular winging. The patient underwent 9 interventional sessions over 3 months and was managed mainly by self-exercise. The intervention method involved push up plus, sling, muscle strengthening, and stabilization exercises. Loads were increased as symptoms improved. Results: Clinical outcomes were measured at every session. Pain in both shoulders reduced to 0 on a numerical pain rate scale by the 4th session, and the active range of motion was fully recovered. During the 9th session, the strength of the serratus anterior had improved from grade P to G on the right side and grade G to N grade on the left. Conclusion: In this case study, the self-exercise program was effective in reducing pain, increasing active range of motion, and improving muscle strength in subjects with scapular winging.
In this paper, we synthesized vowel /ae/ with voice synthesis program of Dr. Speech Science, and we also synthesized pathologic vowel /ae/ by some parameters such as high frequency gain (HFG), low frequency gain(LFG), pitch flutter(PF) which represents jitter value and flutter of amplitude(FA) which represents shimmer value, and grade ranked as mild, moderate and severe respectively. And then we analysed all pathologic voice by analysis program of Dr. Speech Science. We expect that this synthesized pathologic voices are useful for understanding the parameter such as noise, jitter and shimmer and feedback effect to patient with voice disorder.
