  • In the study the instantaneous unit hydrographs (IUHs) based on the linear Nash (1957) and the nonlinear Diskin (1964) models are derived and compared for the Soyang river basin. Total 14 rainfall runoff events are used for the study and the model parameters are estimated by minimizing the sum of square error considering runoff hydrograph ordinates as relative weights. The representative IUHs for both models are decided to show an average shape of derived IUHs. In the application of the representative IUHs of Nash and Diskin, Diskin model shows better performances in reproducing the observed outflows, especially the peak flow. In the comparison of two Diskin models little difference could be found between the IUHs with the same or different number of two characteristic reservoirs.rvoirs.

  • This study examines the applicability of the Nash model and the Diskin model, which are linear and nonlinear runoff models, respectively, by applying optimization techniques to the parameter calibration of the two models. Nonlinear programming which is one of traditional optimization techniques and Genetic Algorithm which has been actively applied recently are used in this study. The Nash and Diskin models which use the calibrated parameter with a flood events are applied to a different flood event in Soyang Dam basin. The results obtained from the parameter calibration show slight discrepancy depending upon the flood events. It has been found in the comparion between the observed hydrograph and the hydrographs obtained from the parameter calibration that the Diskin model can better simulate the observed hydrograph than the Nash model can, especially, for the peak flow. This can be analyzed that the Diskin model which is a nonlinear runoff model is better off in simulating the nonlinear characteristic of the rainfall-runoff process.

  • Infiltration is one of the important processes of the hydrologic cycle determining the distribution of water and has been studied extensively. Various theories and models proposed for this process are usually applicable only when the rainfall intensity is higher than the infiltration capacity. The study by Diskin and Nazimov (1995, 1996) suggested a conceptual infiltration model that comprises two elements. The model can make an reasonable approach to the infiltration process, instead of representing the infiltration as a function of time. The study presented herein improved the existing conceptual infiltration model by an additional consideration of the initial moisture contents. The analysis results for the variation of the infiltration capacity curries for various initial moisture contents demonstrate that the model is more reasonable for the approach to the infiltration process. In addition, the results for the relationship of stormwater events-ponding time are compared with the literature values of that for a number of soil types. The agreement is rather good, leading to the conclusion that the improved model is vapid for describing the infiltration process.

SCS 모형 등 총 9가지 모형을 대상으로 비교한 결과 Wycoff and Sing 모형, Baker 모형, Kessler and Diskin 모형과 Currey and Akan 모형 4가지의 적용결과와 국내 방식으로 산정된 저류지 용량의 상관성은 89.7%로 높게 나타났다.

  • This paper presents an algorithm to derive the representative unit hydrograph for the real environment of a watershed. For a given watershed, the conventional methods give several different unit hydrographs by storm events. In this study the LP model is somewhat modified based on the previous study by Mays et also as follows: the objective function is designed to minimize the sum of weighted residuals. An additional constraint of moving average is added to prevent the unit hydrograph from the occurence of oscillation which was not active in Mays's paper. Configuration of rainfall matrix was improved to reduce its dimension in accordance with Diskin's review point. In spite of the superiority of LP approach in terms of representativeness, all the methods were very sensitive to the validity of baseflow separation and rainfall-loss. Several methods of the separations for rainfall excesses and direct runoffs were applied and no preferred methods were identified. This is the matter of judgement considering catchment and rainfall characteristics. This algorithm was applied to a real watershed of the Wi stream in the Nak-dong river. Compared with the IHP results by conventional methods, this optimized representative unit hydrograph demonstrated relatively smaller and shorter values in terms of the peak discharge and the basin lag respectively, and the oscillation of its falling limb successfully eliminated owing to the additional constraints of moving averages.
