  • In this study, we are investigated experimentally the pumping characteristics about the pumping channel shapes of disk-type drag pump (DTDP). We are experimented the pumping performance about the rotors which have channel or do not exist. The channel disk-type rotor has spiral channels both upper and lower part, and stator is planar. The planar disk-type rotor hasn't channel and stator has spiral channels both upper and lower part. The flow-meter method is adopted to calculate the pumping speed. Compression ratio and pumping speeds for the nitrogen gas are measured under the inlet pressure range of 0.001 ${\sim}$ 4 Torr. The maximum of compression ratio was about 3300 for three-stage DTDP (channel disk-type rotor), 1000 for four-stage (planar disk-type rotor) and two-stage DTDP (channel disk-type rotor) at zero throughput. The ultimate pressure was $1.6{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr for three-stage DTDP (channel disk-type rotor), $2.5{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr for four-stage DTDP (planar disk-type rotor).

  • This paper presents the thermoelastic analysis and 3-D failure analysis of the carbon/carbon brake disk. The mechanical properties of the carbon/carbon brake disk were measured for both in-plane and out of plane directions. The mechanical properties were used as the input of the thermoelastic analysis and 3-D stress analysis for the brake disk. The gap between rotor clip and clip retainer was an important parameter in the loading transfer mechanism of the rotor. The change of gap was considered separating the mechanical deformation and thermal deformation. Because the rotor clip and clip retainers were not contacted, the clip retainers and rivets were excluded from the rotor analysis model. The disk was modeled by using the cyclic symmetry condition and the contact problem between the rotor disk and rotor clip was considered. From the results of the 3-D stress analysis, the stress concentration at the key hole of the brake disk was confirmed.

  • Vibro-acoustic characteristics of a simplified disk-brake rotor containing a narrow radial slot are studied using a semi-analytical procedure. First, modal sound radiations for flexural and radial modes of a generic annular disk having identical key dimension and slot(with free boundaries) are defined using pre-developed analytical solutions based on the modal vibrations from finite element model. The analytical solutions are validated by fully computational methods. Second, sound radiation from a simplified brake rotor simulated using sound radiation solution of the generic disk based on the rotor eigensolutions computed using a finite element code. Predictions by the semi-analytical method matched well numerical calculations using finite element and boundary element method. Finally, sound radiation and vibration characteristics for the example rotor due to a harmonic excitation fixed to the rotor or rotating around the rotor are also obtained.

  • This paper presents the thermo-elastic analysis for searching the behavior of carbon/carbon brake system during the braking period and the 3-D stress analysis to find the shape of the brake disk which is safe to the failure. The mechanical properties of the carbon/carbon brake disk were measured for both in-plane and out of plane directions. The mechanical properties were used as the input of the thermo-elastic analysis and 3-dimensional stress analysis for the brake disk. The gap between rotor clip and clip retainer is an important parameter in the loading transfer mechanism of the rotor disk. The change of gap was considered both the mechanical deformation and thermal deformation. Because the rotor clip and clip retainers were not contacted, they were excluded from the analysis model. Rotor disk was modeled by using the cyclic symmetry condition. The contact problems between rotor clip and key drum as well as between rotor disk and rotor were considered. From the results of the 3-D stress analysis, the stress concentration at the key hole of the brake disk was confirmed. The stress distributions were studied thor the variation of the rotation angle of the contact surface and the radius of curvature at the key hole part.

  • The purpose of current study is to develop the rotor analysis solver and perform a rotor aerodynamic analysis in the wind fence. To this end, the rotor analysis solver based on actuator disk model was employed. To consider the asymmetric effect of the rotor in the wind fence, the flapping motion analysis was conducted with blade element theory for the effective angle of attack calculation. The validation cases which are the rotor with wall and ground were accomplished by developed solver. The decrease of rotor performance by wind fence was confirmed. The wind fence configuration was suggested which guarantees more than 95% rotor performance compared with the no fence case.

  • The strength test was done for the Carbon/Carbon rotor disk which is the critical part of a carbon/carbon brake system in an operating time. The loading fixture was designed for the static strength test of a single carbon/carbon brake disk using finite element analysis. To simulate the real dynamic system in a static condition, the friction surface of the rotor disk was fixed and static load was applied to the rotor slot in the circumferential direction. The described failure mechanism of the brake disk can be described as matrix cracking occurred first at the contact surface of the rotor slot, subsequent delamination from the cracked contact surface, and the final fracture at the notch of the rotor.

  • This study investigates the result of thermal stress analysis on disk rotor by classes at bike brake. In the analysis result of thermal deformation at the steady state, maximum deformations at models 1, 2 and 3 are 0.14347mm, 0.15823mm and 0.16028mm respectively. The deformation becomes larger as the field goes on from the center to the outside at disk rotor. As there are models 1, 2 and 3 in the order of maximum deformation, model 1 has safest among three models. In the analysis result of thermal stress at steady and transient states, there are models 1, 2 and 3 in the order of maximum stress. Model 1 becomes most excellent on strength and safety among three models. By using the analysis result of disk rotor model at bike disk, it is possible to design the model applied practically at the safe driving of bike.

  • The effect of duplicate flexible disks on the vibrational modes of a flexible rotor system is investigated by using an anlytical method based on the assumed modes method. The rotor model to be analyzed consists of duplicate disks on a flexible shaft. In modeling the system, centrifugal stiffening and disk flexibility effects are taken into account. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, a hard disk drive spindle system commonly used in personal computers and a simple flexible rotor system with two disks are selected as examples. In particular, the dynamic coupling between the vibrational modes of the shaft and the duplicate disks is investigated with the shaft rotational speed varied.

  • The direct simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method is applied to investigate steady and unsteady flow fields of a single-stage disk-type drag pump. Two different kinds of pumps are considered: the first one is a rotor-rotor combination, and the second one is a rotor-stator combination. The pumping channels are cut on a rotor and stator. The rotor and stator have 10 Archimedes' spiral blades, respectively. In the present DSMC method, the variable hard sphere model is used as a molecular model, and the no time counter method is employed as a collision sampling technique. For simulation of diatomic gas flows, the Borgnakke-Larsen phenomenological model is adopted to redistribute the translational and internal energies. The DSMC results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • An analytical method using the substructure synthesis and assumed modes method is developed to investigate the effect of flexibility of bladed disk assembly on vibrational modes of flexible rotor system. In modeling the system, Coriolis forces, gyroscopic moments, and centrifugal stiffening effects are taken into account. Then the coupled vibrations between the shaft and bladed disk are extensively investigated using simplistic models, as the shaft rotational speed and the pretwist and stagger angles of blade are varied.
