Haloacetonitriles (HANs) are nitrogenous disinfection by-products (DBPs) that have been reported to have a higher toxicity than the other groups of DBPs. The adsorption process is mostly used to remove HANs in aqueous solutions. Functionalized composite materials tend to be effective adsorbents due to their hydrophobicity and specific adsorptive mechanism. In this study, the removal of dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) from tap water by adsorption on thiol-functionalized mesoporous composites made from natural rubber (NR) and hexagonal mesoporous silica (HMS-SH) was investigated. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results revealed that the thiol group of NR/HMS was covered with NR molecules. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated an expansion of the hexagonal unit cell. Adsorption kinetic and isotherm models were used to determine the adsorption mechanisms and the experiments revealed that NR/HMS-SH had a higher DCAN adsorption capacity than powered activated carbon (PAC). NR/HMS-SH adsorption reached equilibrium after 12 hours and its adsorption kinetics fit well with a pseudo-second-order model. A linear model was found to fit well with the DCAN adsorption isotherm at a low concentration level.
Because of refractory property of light, the travel path of UV light becomes longer than the straight line and shorter solely in water as UV light passes sequentially through air, quartz and water. Note that water significantly absorbs UV light. Hence, UV intensity shall be estimated to be lower when refraction is neglected than it is considered. Reflection is also critical for the design of UV radiation system. While the reflection at the interface of air and quartz is low enough to ignore, it is too high to be ignored at the interface of quartz and water. Assuming constant power, smaller length to width ratio of UV reactor is beneficial and single-lamp system is preferred to multi-lamps. Under the given cross section, optimal lamp positions could be decided. For example of an elliptical reactor with dual lamps, the optimal lamp locations shall be the 1/3 and 2/3 position of the longer axis.
It is important to predict chlorine decay with different water purification processes and distribution pipeline materials, especially because chlorine decay is in direct relationship with the stability of water quality. The degree of chlorine decay may affect the water quality at the end of the pipeline: it may produce disinfection by-products or cause unpleasant odor and taste. Sand filtrate and dual media filtrate were used as influents in this study, and cast iron (CI), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and stainless steel (SS) were used as pipeline materials. The results were analyzed via chlorine decay models by comparing the experimental and model parameters. The models were then used to estimate rechlorination time and chlorine decay time. The results indicated that water quality (e.g. organic matter and alkalinity) and pipeline materials were important factors influencing bulk decay and sand filtrate exhibited greater chlorine decay than dual media filtrate. The two-component second-order model was more applicable than the first decay model, and it enabled the estimation of chlorine decay time. These results are expected to provide the basis for modeling chlorine decay of different water purification processes and pipeline materials.
For D-WTP's sedimentation basin and distribution reservoir, and water tap the predictive models proposed tentatively herein included the models for estimating TTHM concentration in precipitated water, for treated water and for tap water, and the estimated correlation formula between treated water's TTHM concentration and tap water. As for TTHM-concentration predictive model in sedimentation water, the coefficient of determination is 0.866 for best-fitted short-term $DOC{\times}UV_{254}$ based Model (TTHM). As for $HAA_5$-concentration predictive model in sedimentation water, the coefficient of determination is 0.947 for the suitable $UV_{254}$-based model ($HAA_5$). In case of the predictive model in treated water, the coefficient of determination is 0.980 for best-fitted $DOC{\times}UV_{254}$ based model (TTHM) using coagulated waters, while the coefficient of determination is 0.983 for best-fitted $DOC{\times}UV_{254}$ based model ($HAA_5$) using coagulated waters, which described the $HAA_5$ concentration well. However, the predictive model for tap water could not be compatible with the one for treated water, only except for possibility inducing correlation formula for prediction, [i.e., the correlation formula between TTHM concentration and tap water was verified as TTHM (tap water) = $1.162{\times}TTHM$ (treated water), while $HAA_5$ (tap water) = $0.965{\times}HAA_5$ (treated water).] The correlation analysis between DOC and $KMnO_4$ consumption by process resulted in higher relationship with filtrated water, showing that its regression is $DOC=0.669{\times}KMnO_4$ consumption - 0.166 with 0.689 of determination coefficient. By substituting it to the existing DOC-based model ($HAA_5$) for treated water, the consequential model formula was made as follows; $HAA_5=8.35(KMnO_4\;consumption{\times}0.669-0.166)^{0.701}(Cl_2)^{0.577}t^{0.150}0.9216^{(pH-7.5)}1.022^{(Temp-20^{\circ}C)}$
This study attempted to develop the technology by gaseous ozone for decontaminating building affected by a model of biological weapon agent(Bacillus subtilis spores) instead of Bacillus anthracis spore. The use of ozone is attractive method from a practical point of view of decontamination procedure since it has strong oxidation power but no residue after application. We examined the disinfection efficiency of gaseous ozone to Bacillus subtilis spores which suspension was sprayed on different material surfaces and dried. Three different types of gaseous ozone was applied : dry ozone, dry ozone with humidified air, and water bubbled wet ozone. Dry ozone(1500ppm) failed to achieve any significant inactivation for 2hrs. However, six log reduction of B. subtilis spore was achieved within 30min by 1500ppm of water bubbled wet ozone. This result shows the noticeable inactivation efficiency by gaseous ozone compared with previous studies. Good performance by wet ozone was also found for military material surface.(i.e. : gas mask hood, protective garments, army peinted metal surface).
The applicabilities and validities of two methodologies fur the prediction of THM (trihalomethane) formation in a water pipeline system were proposed and discussed. One is the multiple regression technique and the other is an artificial neural network technique. There are many factors which influence water quality, especially THMs formations in water pipeline systems. In this study, the prediction models of THM formation in water pipeline systems are developed based on the independent variables proposed by American Water Works Association(AWWA). Multiple linear/nonlinear regression models are estimated and three layer feed-forward artificial neural networks have been used to predict the THM formation in a water pipeline system. Input parameters of the models consist of organic compounds measured in water pipeline systems such as TOC, DOC and UV254. Also, the reaction time to each measuring site along pipeline is used as input parameter calculated by a hydraulic analysis. Using these variables as model parameters, four models are developed. And the predicted results from the four developed models are compared statistically to the measured THMs data set. It is shown that the artificial neural network approaches are much superior to the conventional regression approaches and that the developed models by neural network can be used more efficiently and reproduce more accurately the THMs formation in water pipeline systems, than the conventional regression methods proposed by AWWA.
Disinfectant residual should be maintained to achieve biological stability during distribution of treated water. The wide distribution of retention times associated with storage and transport of water in a network and the reactivity of disinfectants make it difficult to maintain adequate residuals at critical locations. Rechlorination at some intermediate locations may reduce the total disinfectant dose while keeping residuals within specified limits throughout the water distribution system. In order to select the adequate location of rechlorination for achieving to maintain of residual chlorine throughout the distribution system, EPANET was used in this study. EPANET was well predicted chlorine transport and residual loss in the distribution system. Location of rechlorination was selected to maintain 0.4mg/L of residual chlorine throughout a water distribution system by field investigation and model simulation. The quantity of chlorine may reduced 36.7% and provided smooth residual between 0.42 and 0.60mg/L, when rechlorination would be used continuously at strategic location within the distribution system.
Wastewater reuse are exposed public health risk by pathogens. Therefore, this study was examined for microbial risk assessment after irrigation as treated wastewater in paddy rice plots. Five treatments were used: biofilter effluent, UV disinfected water, pond treatment, wetland treatment and conventional irrigation water. Risk assessment was calculated based on the beta-Poisson model by concentration of E. coli from 2003 to 2005. Monte-Carlo simulation (n=10,000) was used to estimate the risk characterization of uncertainty. The risk range was from $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-8}$ except biofilter effluent was $10^{-4}$ in June. The USEPA(1992) has recommended that risk of < $10^{-4}$ is acceptable level of safety for potable waters. In 2005, risk value was lower than 2003, 2004 because of the first irrigation for plowing water is lower E. coli concentration used tap water. It is shown that the first irrigation water quality was important for wastewater irrigation in paddy. UV disinfection and natural treatment used pond and wetland were thought to be an effective for wastewater reuse.
