SYNERGISTIC SKIN PROPERTY INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ALPHA HYDROXY ACID AND SKIN MOISTURIZER IN A HAND DISHWASHING DETERGENT

  • The use of both an Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Citric Acid, and a Skin Moisturizer, Glycereth-26, formulated into a hand dishwashing detergent have been shown to be synergistic in their effects on certain skin health parameters. Each ingredient was evaluated alone and together in a hand dishwashing detergent via a 9-week use test. Panelists washed dishes using the sponge method commonly used in Asian markets and a 1:7 dilution of the concentrated dish detergent. Panelist's hands were evaluated initially and at 3-week intervals for nine weeks. After nine weeks panelist's hands showed significant improvements in Moisture Absorption and Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). A synergistic effect on TEWL was found between the AHA and the Moisturizer. These effects, showing an improvement in the condition of the panelist's skin are impressive, particularly since they were observed from a dishwashing product that is highly diluted and at near neutral pH during the washing process.

  • The dish cloth requires antimicrobial activity for hygienic purpose. Until now, organic antimicrobial agents of low cost have been frequently used for the anitimicrobial finishing. However, a cleaner hving anitimicroial activity should be more durable considering consumers' ever-increasing expectation. In this study, the cleaner containing the bamboo fiber were finished with a formulation of a new zirconium-containing inorganic agent of zirconium phosphate and polyurethane binders. The optimum treatment condition was investigated. And its durability against repeated laundering cycles was assessed. The existence of Zr after the repeated laundering was verified and the antimicrobial effect did not decrease under 30 washing cycles.

  • Background: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic increased awareness regarding the importance of hand hygiene in infection prevention. Although social distancing and vaccination are the strongest ways to prevent infection, personal hand hygiene is the most basic and easiest way to maintain public health. However, in addition to hand washing using running water, sanitizing tissues, and disinfection products are convenient for hand hygiene, especially outdoors. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the appropriateness of individual hand hygiene methods. In this study, we investigated the degree of hand hygiene offered by various hygiene products and hand drying methods for maintaining hand hygiene. Methods: An LED UV light kit was used for fluorescent observation of hand contamination. Bacteria from the hands were cultured to compare the degree of hand hygiene offered by various hygiene products. Bacteria were cultured in a hand-shaped medium dish to identify areas vulnerable to hand hygiene. Moreover, the degree of hand hygiene was observed according to the drying method using bacterial cultures. Results: We confirmed that hand washing under running water with antibacterial soap, sanitizing with alcohol gel disinfectant, and wiping with antibacterial wet wipes was effective for hand hygiene compared to washing under running water alone. However, for all hygiene products, a large number of bacteria were detected on the fingertips. We verified that natural drying, rather than rubbing, is effective in maintaining hand hygiene. Conclusion: These results suggest that hand hygiene products and drying methods are critical in hand hygiene management. Therefore, these results provide a basis for determining whether an individual's hand hygiene management method is appropriate.

Development of Natural Dishwashing Liquid containing the Curcuma Longa L., Morus alba and Ecklonia cava extracts (강황, 상백피 및 감태 추출 혼합물을 첨가한 천연 주방세제 개발)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the quality characteristics of the natural dishwashing liquid added with the mixture extracts of Curcuma Longa L. (CL), Morus alba (MA) and Ecklonia cava (EC) at various concentrations. The pH and lightness of the natural dishwashing liquid were reduced by adding the mixture extracts, while the turbidity was increased. The natural dish washing liquid added with mixture extracts was shown to display strong antimicrobial activities against L. monocytogenes compared to that of control. Also, it revealed that antioxidant activity was increased depending on concentrations. However, natural dishwashing liquid added with mixture extracts showed the low detergency efficiency. In sensory evaluation, the natural dishwashing liquid containing CL 0.5%, MA 0.25% and EC 0.25% was preferred than the control and it showed negative result in skin patch test. These results suggest that the addition of CL 0.5%, MA 0.25% and EC 0.25% positively improved the qualities characteristics in the natural dish washing liquid.

  • In order to develop a better food preparation method in terms of vitamin retention in food service establishments, the retention rate of riboflavin in two kinds of Korean dish (stir-fried sausage with vegetables, stir-fried garlic young stems) were examined during various cooking stages, holding temperature and duration time. Riboflavin content of the sample was analyzed using by using a HPLC with a fluorescent detector at various holding durations and temperatures. Also the changes in the pH and water contents of the samples were measured during holding at various temperatures to find any relation among the pH, water contents and riboflavin content. In the results, there were significant differences in riboflavin contents at various cooking processes such as washing, slicing, blanching, soaking, etc. Also, the retention rates of riboflavin at various holding methods and temperature were significantly different from one another. Especially 50% reduction of riboflavin content occurred during blanching of young garlic stem and only 38% of riboflavin was left after slicing carrots for stir-frying of sausage.

  • This report described the corrosion structure of excavated iron artifacts in terms of simple model based on the knowledge of the corrosion process. (Fig.1)(Table 1,2)In storing the objects, there are basically three ways in which they either break in wedges, flakes and dish-shaped flakes. Completely mineralized objects or those with only a small iron core tend to break into wedges and more solid objects either split small dish-shaped flakes or large flat ones.(Fig. 2,3,4)There are two ways, therefore, to prevent this from happening. One is to keep the artifacts rigorously dried in Silica-gel, never allowing the relative humidity to rise. This is feasible which the artifacts are in store but causes great difficulty if they are wanted for museum display. Because they still contain $ FeCl _2$ they are always at risk ; they contain the seeds of their own destruction. The other alternative is to use of washing process to dissolve out the $ FeCl _2$. In this connection, many different methods to stabilize the artifact have been employed; boiling iron in frequent changes of water, soaking in Na-sesquicarbonate solution, soaking in alkaline Na-sulphite solution. In this report, introduced the alkaline sulphite method by the N.A. Effects of Bowl Material and Rinsing Period on Variation in the Amount of Residual Surfactant Resided in the Bowls after Dish-Washing (세제세척 후 용기재질과 헹굼시간에 따른 계면활성제 잔류량 변화)

  • This study selected representative popular bowls used in daily life and laboratory and investigated the amount of residual surfactant resided in the bowls that were dish-washed. The bowls were washed by a scourer soaking 8 mL-detergent and then rinsed by flowing water for 7 or 15 seconds. One hundred milliliter of distilled water was placed in the washed-bowls to extract residual surfactant on the bowl surface and then analysed. All washed-bowls included residual surfactant after 7 second-rinsing. Residual surfactant concentrations in Ttukbaegi (earthen bowl), flying pan, glass bowl, and plastic bowl were 4.68, 1.22, 0.57, and 0.25 mg/L, respectively. However, the 15 second-rinsing showed that surfactant was detected only in Ttukbaegi and other bowls were clean. The results showed that surfactant would reside on the porous or rough surface of the bowl even after final rinsing. This study imply that all bowls and glasses should be throughly rinsed after detergent-washing to reduce continuos ingestion. Furthermore, residual surfactant in the glassware of laboratory may significantly affect experiment results.

Task-based Exposure Assessment among Laboratory workers in Organic Synthesis Laboratories (유기합성실험실 연구자의 단위작업별 노출 평가)

  • Objective: Significant concerns have been raised over chemical exposure and potential health risks such as increased cancer mortality among laboratory workers. The aim of this study was to investigate the overall exposure and unit task exposure levels of researchers in organic synthesis laboratories at universities. Methods: Seventy-seven personal Time-weighted average(TWA) samples and 139 task-based samples from four organic synthesis laboratories at two universities were collected over three days. The concentrations of acetone, chloroform, dichloromethane(DCM), diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, tetrahydrofuran(THF), benzene, toluene, and xylene were determined using the GC-FID. Results: The most frequently used chemicals in the laboratories were acetone, DCM, n-hexane, methanol, and THF. Carcinogens such as benzene, chloroform, and DCM were used in one or more laboratories. The TWA full-shift exposures of researchers to acetone was the highest(ND-59.3 ppm). Benzene was observed above the occupational exposure limit in 18-40% of the samples. The levels of exposure to organic solvents were statistically different by task(p<0.05), while washing task was the highest. Washing was not perceived as a part of the real lab tasks. Rather it was considered as simple dish-washing or experimental preparation and performed in an open sink where exposure to organic solvents was unavoidable. TWAs and task-based concentrations were compared by substance, which suggests that TWA-based assessment could not reflect short-term and high concentration exposures. Conclusions: Laboratory workers may be exposed to various organic solvents at levels of concern. TWA-based measurement alone cannot guarantee holistic exposure assessment among lab workers as their exposures are very dependent on their tasks. Further investigation and characterization for specific tasks and overall chronic exposures will help protect lab workers from unnecessary exposure to chemicals while they perform research.

  • By measuring the COD (chemical oxygen demend) of dish washing detergents being sold at market and pollutants connected with domestic sewage, we compared the amounts of water pollutants of one with other and carried out the experiments of ultimate biodegradation as against these samples. Also we combined our experimental results and circumstances of water pollution and wastewater treatments to the sewage system, compared the effects of synthetic detergent on water pollution with soap and the other pollutants and investigated results of our research.
