A Study on Discrete-Continuous Modeling Methodology for Supply Chain Simulation (공급사슬시뮬레이션을 위한 이산-연속 모델링 방법에 관한 연구)

  • Most of supply chain simulation models have been developed on the basis of discrete-event simulation. Since supply chain systems are neither completely discrete nor continuous, the need of constructing a model with aspects of both discrete-event simulation and continuous is provoked, resulting in a combined discrete-continuous simulation. Continuous simulation concerns the modeling over time of a system by a representation in which the state variables change continuously with respect to time. In this paper, an architecture of combined modeling for supply chain simulation is proposed, which presents the equation of continuous part in supply chain and how these equations are used supply chain simulation models. A simple supply chain model is demonstrated the possibility and the capability of this approach.

  • This paper describes a methodology for the development of models of discrete event system. The methodology is based on transformation of continuous state space into discrete one to homomorphically represent dynamics of continuous processes in discrete events. This paper proposes a formal structure which can coupled discrete event system models within a framework. The structure employs the discrete event specification formalism for the discrete event system models. The proposed formal structure has been applied to develop a discrete event specification model for the complex spectral density analysis of strip for urin analyzer system. For this, spectral density data of strip is partitioned into a set of Phases based on events identified through urine spectrophotometry. For each phase, a continuous system of the continuous model for the urine spectral density analysis has been simulated by programmed C++. To validate this model, first develop the discrets event specification model, then simulate the model in the DEVSIM++ environment. It has the similar simulation results for the data obtained from the continuous system simulation. The comparison shows that the discrete event specification model represents dynamics of the urine spectral density at each phase.

  • Physical systems axe generally continuous-time in nature. However as the data measured from these systems is generally in the form of discrete samples, and most modern signal processing is performed in the discrete-time domain, discrete-time models are employed. This paper describes methods for estimating the coefficients of continuous-time system within a closed loop control system. The method employs a recursive estimation algorithm to identify the coefficients of a discrete-time bilinear-operator model. The coefficients of the discrete-time bilinear-operator model closely approximate those of the corresponding continuous-time Laplace transform transfer function.

Simulation is preferred to deal with stochastic natures existing in the supply chain. Moreover simulation has a capability to find local optimum value within each component through entire supply chain. Most of supply chain simulation models have been developed on the basis of discrete-event simulation. Since supply chain systems are neither completely discrete nor continuous, the need of constructing a model with aspects of both discrete-event and continuous simulation is provoked, resulting in a combined discrete-continuous simulation. In this paper, an architecture of combined modeling for supply chain simulation is proposed, which includes the equation of continuous portion in supply chain and how these equations are used in the supply chain simulation models. A simple example of supply chain model dealing with the strategic level of supply chain presented in this paper shows the possibility and the prospect of this approach.

  • Estimating the accurate internal state of lithium ion batteries to increase their safety and efficiency is crucial. Various algorithms are used to estimate the internal state of a lithium ion battery, such as the extended Kalman filter and sliding mode observer. A state-space model is essential in using algorithms to estimate the internal state of a battery. Two principal methods are used to express the state-space model, namely, continuous time and discrete time. In this work, the extended Kalman filter is employed to estimate the internal state of a battery. Moreover, this work presents and analyzes the estimation performance of algorithms consisting of a continuous time state-space model and a discrete time state-space model through static and dynamic profiles.

  • Combined models, specified by two or more modeling formalisms, can represent a wide variety of complex systems. This paper describes a methodology for the development of combined models in two model types of discrete events and continuous process. The methodology is based on transformation of continuous state space into discrete one to homomorphically represent dynamics of continuous processes in discrete events. As an example, a combined model of human heart is developed which Incorporates conventional differential equation formalism with Zeigler's DEVS(Discrete Event Specification System) [4]formalism.

  • In this paper, an integrated method for the path planning and motion control of wheeled mobile robots using a hybrid system model and control is presented. The hybrid model including the continuous dynamics and discrete dynamics with the continuous and discrete state vector is derived for a two wheel driven mobile robot. The architecture of the hybrid control system for real time path planning and following is designed which has the 3-layered hierarchical structure : the discrete event system using the digital automata as the higher process, the continuous state system for the wheel velocity controls as the lower process, and the interface system as the interaction process between the continuous system as the low level and the discrete event system as the high level. The reference motion commands for autonomous navigation are generated by the abstracted motion in the discrete event system. The motion control tasks including the feasible path planning and autonomous motion control with various initial conditions are investigated as the applications by the simulation studies.

  • Structural optimization problems with discrete design variables require more function calculations (or finite element analyses) than those in the continuous design space. In this study, a method to find an optimal solution in the discrete design of the truss structure is presented, reducing the number of function calculations. Because a continuous optimal solution is the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker point that satisfies the optimality condition, it is assumed that the discrete optimal solution is around the continuous optimum. Then, response values such as weight, displacement, and stress are predicted using approximate models-referred to as hybrid metamodels-within specified design ranges. The discrete design method using the hybrid metamodels is used as a post-process of the continuous optimization process. Standard truss design problems of 10-bar, 25-bar, 15-bar, and 52-bar are solved to show the usefulness of this method. The results are compared with those of existing methods.

  • Combined models, specified by two or more modeling formalisms, can represent a wide variety of complex systems. This paper describes a methodology for the development of combined models in two model types of discrete event and continuous process. The methodology is based on transformation of continuous state space into discrete one to homomorphically represent dynamics of continuous processes in discrete events. This paper proposes a formal structure which can combine model of the DES and the CS within a framework. The structure employs the DEVS formalism for the DES models and differential or polynomial equations for the CS models. To employ the proposed structure to specify a DEVS/CS combined model, a modeler needs to take the following steps. First, a modeler should identify events in the CS and transform the states of the CS into the DES. Second, a modular employs the formalism to specify the system as the DES. Finally, a moduler developes sub-models for the CS and continguos states of the DES and establishs one-to-one correspondence between the sub-models and such states. The proposed formal structre has been applied to develop a DEVS/CS combined model for the human cardiovascular system. For this, the cardiac cycle is partitioned into a set of phases based on events identified through observation. For each phase, a CS model has been developed and associated with the phase. To validate the DEVS/CS combined model developed, then simulate the model in the DEVSIM + + environment, which is a model simulation results with the results obtained from the CS model simulation using SPICE. The comparison shows that the DEVS/CS combined model adequately represents dynamics of the human heart system at each phase of cardiac cycle.
