  • An examination of avalable data relevant to several problems in the Korean family planning program led us to the following conclusions: 1. The high incidence of discontinuance in the use of IUD appears to be one of the foremost problems which effectiveness of the family planning program in Korea. Thus, the development of technologies and program strategies to decrease the discontinuance rate is badly needed to increase effectiveness and efficiency of the program. 2. The monthly supply of oral pill was found inadequate in terms of timing at the end and beginning of the year. 3. The frequency of home visiting showed discrepancy between service statistics and survey result. Evidences indicate that the latter figure is more correct. Program strategies should be developed to make home visiting activities more effective. 4. It was observed that the unit cost of the family planning program was increased fairly rapidly. It calls for the necessity of increasing cost efficiency of the program.

  • A good animal model that simulates the human subject has not been available for the evaluation of the in vivo effectiveness of vaginal contraceptives. After careful consideration, The stumptailed macaque (Macaca arctoides) was studied for its applicability since it has a reproductive tract similar to that of the woman, is easy to handle, does not require tranquilization or anesthesia when the contraceptive is deposited, and breeds and conceives readily under caged conditions. The reported observations show the usefulness of this animal. Both postcoital sperm motility studies and breeding experiments were performed with the use of Delfen vaginal cream and K-Y jelly. K-Y jelly had no effect on the motility of vaginal spermatozoa or on the conception rate of the primates. Although Delfen vaginal cream consistently immobilized all spermatozoa in the postcoital test, half of the animals became pregnant within an average of 3.7 breeding cycles. These results illustrate the discrepancy between spermicidal tests and fertility measurements, and it is recommended that primate-breeding experiments be performed before a spermicide is evaluated in women as a contraceptive. • Specimens of stainless steel reactor internals were irradiated with 240 keV protons and 6 MeV Xe ions at room temperature. Nanoindentation constant stiffness measurement tests were carried out to study the hardness variations. An irradiation hardening effect was observed in proton- and Xe-irradiated specimens and more irradiation damage causes a larger hardness increment. The Nix-Gao model was used to extract the bulk-equivalent hardness of irradiation-damaged region and critical indentation depth. A different hardening level under H and Xe irradiation was obtained and the discrepancies of displacement damage rate and ion species may be the probable reasons. It was observed that the hardness of Xe-irradiated specimens saturate at about 2 displacement/atom (dpa), whereas in the case of proton irradiation, the saturation hardness may be more than 7 dpa. This discrepancy may be due to the different damage distributions.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of dietary protein and calcium levels on calcium metabolism in eight healthy Korean adult females. The 2-day metabolic study consisted of a 2 day adaptation period and three 6-day experimental periods. Three experimental diets were low protein low calcium(LPLCa : protein 44g, Ca 422mg), higher protein low calcium(HPLCa : protein 85g, Ca 365mg), and high protein high calcium (HPHCa : protein 84g, Ca 727mg). The apparent calcium absorption was likely to be affected by the calcium intake rather than by the protein intake. Average calcium absorption rate was about 23-29% of calcium intake. The calcium balance was -21.44mg for LPCa, -25.02mg for HPLCa, and -3.22mg for HPHCa. Avergae urinary calcium excretion was 127.7mg for LPLCa, 108.6mg for HPLCa, and 215.4mg for HPHCa. Urinary calcium excretion was more closely related to the changes of calcium intake rather than of protein intake. These results seemed to be due to the interactions between the high phosphours contained in the high protein diet and the little discrepancy of protein intake levels.

  • High ambient interstellar pressure is suggested as a possible factor to explain the ubiquitous ob-served growth-rate discrepancy for supernova-driven super bubbles and stellar wind bubbles. Pressures of P / k ${\~} 10^5\;cm^{-3}$ K are plausible for regions with high star formation rates, and these values are intermediate between the estimated Galactic mid-plane pressure and those observed in starburst galaxies. High-pressure components also are commonly seen in Galactic ISM localizations. We demonstrate the sensitivity of shell growth to the ambient pressure, and suggest that super bubbles ultimately might serve as ISM barometers.

  • In this study, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to examine the changes in the electrochemical properties of biodegradable pure magnesium implanted into Sprague-Dawley rats for three days. The in vivo test results were compared with those of the in vitro tests carried out in Hank's, dilute saline and simulated body fluid (SBF) solutions. The in vitro corrosion rates were 20~1700 fold higher, as compared to the in vivo corrosion rates. This discrepancy is caused by biomolecule adsorption on the surface, which prevents the transport of water into the magnesium surface on in vivo testing. Among the in vitro experimental conditions, the corrosion rate in SBF solution had the least difference from the in vivo implanted specimen.

  • The present work has attempted to investigate the dependence of Cu infiltration kinetics on in-situ structure modification of W powder skeleton in W-Cu system. In-situ structure modification of W skeleton by addition of 0.3wt%Ni-P eutectic alloy was designed to proceed during heat-up of the W compact for Cu infiltration process. It was found that the Ni-P added W skeleton underwent remarkable stucture change only during heating-up. its structure was composed of large necks of W particles above 0.5 in the ratio of neck to particle size and smooth pore channels. The infiltration experiment showed that the infiltration kinetics for the W-Ni-P followed well the linear relationship of h vs. $t^{1/2}$ the rate constant K of which was in good agreement with the theoretical value. On the other hand, in case of the pure W skeleton a lower K value by 20% than the theoretical one was obatined. Such discrepancy is discussed in terms of skeleton structure induced infiltration mechanics.

  • Limb-salvage surgery has become more popular than amputation for the treatment of malignant bone tumor because no differences in local recurrence and the 5-year survival rate have been found. However for young patients with sarcoma, skeletal immaturity may be a contraindication to limb-salvage surgery due to the expected leg length discrepancy. If limb-sparing procedure should be impossible for skeletally immature patients, amputation has to be given first consideration. To minimize the functional difficulty from short amputation stump of above knee amputation, we performed lengthening of the amputation stump using ipsilateral tibia. One patient was lengthened 17cm using ipsilateral tibia and the other, 12cm. Two patients and their families were satisfied both clinically and psychologically.

  • The coherent flamelet model(CFM) is applied to symmetric counterflow turbulent premixed flames. The flame source term is set proportional to the turbulence intensity to reproduce the experimental correlation of Abdel-Gayed et al. for the turbulent burning velocity. Flame quenching by the turbulent rate of strain is modeled by an additional multiplication factor to the flame source term. A modified form of CFM is employed to consider coexistence of burned and unburned premixture with ambient air. The predicted flame position and turbulent flow field coincide well with the experimental data of Kostiuk et al., although there is some discrepancy in the radial rms velocity component and integral length scale near the symmetric plane.

  • Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common malignant tumors worldwide, with a 5-year survival rate of < 40%. The diagnosis and treatment decisions of GC rely on human experts' judgments on medical images; therefore, the accuracy can be hindered by image condition, objective criterion, limited experience, and interobserver discrepancy. In recent years, several applications of artificial intelligence (AI) have emerged in the GC field based on improvement of computational power and deep learning algorithms. AI can support various clinical practices in endoscopic examination, pathologic confirmation, radiologic staging, and prognosis prediction. This review has systematically summarized the current status of AI applications after a comprehensive literature search. Although the current approaches are challenged by data scarcity and poor interpretability, future directions of this field are likely to overcome the risk and enhance their accuracy and applicability in clinical practice.
