The aim of this study is to observe the trend of discourse study in language education and analyze the main issues by investigating the literatures related to discourse in Korean language education in the last ten years. This study observed the discourse study conducted in Korean language education from the perspectives of study subject, study method and study data. Moreover, based on the results, it estimated the achievements and effectiveness of the discourse study conducted in Korean language education. The subject of discourse study was mainly dealt with discourse function, discourse pattern, discourse marker, discourse structure. In the study methods, analysis of corpus and survey were mainly used as the study methods, and spoken corpus, written corpus and semi-spoken corpus were used as study materials. In particular, the semi-spoken corpus was used at a very high rate among them. This showed that discourse study in Korean language education was mainly focused on spoken corpus study. This study divided the detailed field of Korean language education into four fields of linguistic knowledge, communication function, teaching activities and learning activities, and observed the trends of discourse study in each field. Overall, it was recognized that relatively many studies were focused on linguistic knowledge, particularly in pragmatic perspective. It can be said that the study based on discourse has a language educational effectiveness in that it is based on actual data and improves practical communication skills in the environment of various languages.
The temporal structure of events on the discourse level has long been of great interest in both theoretical and computational linguistics. In this paper, we offer a unified approach to the temporal relationships related to a hierarchical discourse structure. We apply the method of pronoun resolution to the interpretation of tense. It is based on an analysis within the framework of the controlled information packaging theory. A unique aspect of our account is that temporal interpretation across discourse segments in global discourse is subject to the same principles as the interpretation of global anaphora, and that there is thus no need to postulate independent principles to account for the discourse behaviour of tense. In this way, we can neatly explain the general view that tense parallels the anaphoric nature of pronouns.
This paper investigates any possible correlation between the information structure and the occurrence of clause internal pauses in the spontaneous discourse. One of the possible functions of pause is its capacity to signal the information structure of the discourse. However, this aspect was not much explored in Korean spontaneous speech. In the present study, information structure of spontaneous speech was defined for each word or word group on the basis of the information structure analysis model proposed by Van Donzel (1999) and Roulet (1991, 1997). Thus, at a local level (words or word groups) of discourse structure, a distinction was made between three types of information, new, given and inferable. The results showed that clause internal pauses tend to appear more frequently before new information than other types of information. However compared to the total number of words or word groups it was not noticed any specific ordering concerning different kind of information status and pausing. It was however found that clause internal pauses did not appear randomly. The majority of them occurred at the initial part of the clause or the sentence. This tendency was mostly related to the division of sentence (or clause) into topic and comment. Thus, the role of pauses as a marker of information structure seems to be less effective in spontaneous discourse.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the teacher's discourse structure in the process of solving mathematics problems based on the communication between teachers and students. To achieve this goal, we observed a semester class by a teacher with experience who practiced a teaching method that creates mathematical meanings based on students' participation in class. In order to solve problems based on the participation of students in each class, the similarities between the processes of creating the structure of the discourse were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the teacher was able to focus on the goal in the process of starting a discourse, and in the process of developing the discourse, the problem was solved by focusing on understanding the problem. In the process of arranging the discourse, the problem-solving process and the core of the result is summarized. Based on the possibility of generalization of the teacher discourse structure, it will be able to provide practical help in the process of implementing a teaching method that solves mathematics problems by communicating with students in the future.

In this work, we first introduce two main approaches to writing requirements and then propose a method based on Natural Language Processing to improve requirement authoring and the overall coherence, cohesion and organization of requirement documents. We investigate the structure of requirement kernels, and then the discourse structure associated with those kernels. This will then enable the system to accurately extract requirements and their related contexts from texts (called requirement mining). Finally, we relate a first experimentation on requirement mining based on texts from seven companies. An evaluation that compares those results with manually annotated corpora of documents is given to conclude.
This paper examines two different approaches to resolving a theoretical problem which the bottom-up approach version of Discourse Representation Theory of Kamp et al. (2003) faces in dealing with anaphoric relations between pronouns and their potential antecedents in conditional sentences where consequent clauses precede their corresponding conditional clauses. In one of the approaches, every element is processed in the order of occurrence and conditional operators in a non-sentence-initial position cause the ongoing DR to split in two with the same index. The definition of accessibility is accordingly modified so that the right DR can be accessible from the left DR. In the other approach, a different type of discourse representation structure, K ${\Leftarrow}$ K, is introduced, which allows us to resolve the target problem without modifying accessibility proposed in Kamp et al. (2003). Compatibility of these two approaches with the bottom-up version of DRT is evaluated by examining their applicability to the analysis of quantified sentences where pronominal expressions precede generalized quantifiers.
This study examines the use of discourse markers in cross-cultural communication between EFL learners in an e-learning environment. The study analyzes the use of discourse markers in a corpus of an interactive web with a bulletin board system through which college students of English at Japanese and Korean universities interacted with each other discussing the topics of local and global issues. It compares the use of discourse markers in the learners' corpus to that of a native English speakers' corpus. The results indicate that discourse markers are useful interactional devices to structure and organize discourse. EFL learners are found to display more frequent use of referentially and cognitively functional discourse markers and a relatively rare use of other markers. Native speakers are found to use a wider variety of discourse markers for different functions. Suggestions are made for using computer corpora in understanding EFL learners' language difficulties and helping them become more interactionally competent speakers.

This paper presents a text-driven discourse analysis system, called DPAS. DPAS constructs a discourse structure by weaving together clauses in the text by finding discourse relations between a clause and the clauses in a context. The basic processing model of DPAS is based on the stack based model of discourse analysis suggested by Grosz and Sidner. We extend the model with dynamic programming method to handle various discourse ambiguities effectively and efficiently. We develop the idea of a context space to keep all information of a context. DPAS parses a text by considering all possible discourse relations between a clause and a context. Since different discourse relations may result in different states of a context, DPAS maintains multiple context spaces for an ambiguous text. Since maintaining all interpretations until the whole text is processed requires too much computing resources, DPAS uses the idea of depth-limited search to limit the search space. If there is more than one discourse relation between an input clause and a context, DPAS constructs context spaces one context space for each discourse relation. Then, DPAS applies heuristics to choose the most desirable context space after it processes some more input clauses. Since the basic idea of DPAS is domain independent, although we used descriptive texts to demonstrate DPAS, we believe the idea of DPAS can be extended to understand other styles of texts.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the discourse structure of teachers that can help students participate in class by using mathematical metaphors that can arouse students' interest and motivation. In order to achieve this goal, we observed a semester class of a career teacher who practiced pedagogy that connects students' experiences with mathematical concepts to motivate students to learn and promote participation. Among the metaphors that the study target teachers used in a variety of mathematical concepts and problem-solving processes during the semester, we extracted the two class examples that can help develop teaching methods using metaphors. Representatively selected two classes are one class example using metaphors and, the other class example using metaphors and expanding and applying problems. As a result of analysis, the structure of teacher discourse that uses metaphors and expands and applies problems by linking students' experiences with mathematical content was found to help solve a given problem and elaborate mathematical concepts. As a result of the analysis, the discourse structure of teachers using mathematical metaphors based on communication with students could provide implications for the development of teaching methods for the recovery of mathematics education.
The purpose of this study is to analyze classroom discourse in the math classroom of middle school in China, which has a unique math classroom background of entrance examination for high school. To this end, this study analyzed teacher question statistics and episodes by teacher question type as starting speech in mathematics classroom discourse, and five IRF subtypes were especially identified by class discourse structure analysis. The data were analyzed focusing on a total of 15 transcripts of math classes recorded by three math teachers at H School in Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China, and written interviews of teachers. According to the results of this study, an average of 20 teacher questions were observed for each class, and the teacher question type was classified into confirmation question (understanding confirmation question, explanation request question, and double check question) and information question (information presentation question). In addition, according to classroom discourse analysis, the IRF discourse structure was divided into fragmentary evaluation, evaluation+reason, evidence of explanation, evaluation+student response re-statement, guidance on other thoughts or solutions, and student answer correction or teacher opinion presentation.
