A Novel Theory of Support in Social Media Discourse

  • This paper aims to inform people how to support each other on social media. It alludes to an architecture for social media discourse and proposes a novel theory of support in social media discourse. It makes a methodological contribution. It combines predominately artificial intelligence with corpus linguistics analysis. It is on a large-scale dataset of anonymised diabetes-related user's posts from the Facebook platform. Log-likelihood and precision measures help with validation. A multi-method approach with Discourse Analysis helps in understanding any potential patterns. People living with Diabetes are found to employ sophisticated high-frequency patterns of device-enabled categories of purpose and content. It is with, for example, linguistic forms of Advice with stance-taking and targets such as Diabetes amongst other interactional ways. There can be uncertainty and variation of effect displayed when sharing information for support. The implications of the new theory aim at healthcare communicators, corpus linguists and with preliminary work for AI support-bots. These bots may be programmed to utilise the language patterns to support people who need them automatically.

Lexical Bundles in Computer Science Research Articles: A Corpus-Based Study

  • The purpose of this corpus-based study was to find 4-word lexical bundles in computer science research articles. As the demand for research articles (RAs) for international publication increases, the need for acquiring field-specific writing conventions for this academic genre has become a burning issue. Particularly, one area of burgeoning interest in the examination of rhetorical structures and linguistic features of RAs is the use of lexical bundles, the indispensable building blocks that make up an academic discourse. To illustrate, different academic discourses rely on distinctive repertoires of lexical bundles. Because lexical bundles are often acquired as a whole, the recurring multi-word sequences can be retrieved automatically to make written discourse more fluent and natural. Therefore, the proper use of rhetorical devices specific to a particular discipline can be a vital indicator of success within the discourse communities. Hence, to identify linguistic features that make up specific registers, this corpus-based study examines the types and usage frequency of lexical bundles in the discipline of CS, one of the most in-demand fields world over. Given that lexical bundles are empirically-derived formulaic multi-word units, identifying core lexical bundles used in RAs, they may provide insights into the specificity of particular CS text types. This will in turn provide empirical evidence of register specificity and technicality within the academic discourse of computer science. As in the results, pedagogical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Non-Discourse Marker Uses of So in EFL Writings: Functional Variability among Asian Learners

  • This paper examines the frequency and distribution of the so-called "non-discourse marker functions" of so in essay writings produced by 200 L1 English speakers and 1,300 EFL learners in China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Based on the data drawn from the International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English, this study compares EFL learners and L1 English speakers' uses of so, identifying four grammatical uses, as (1) an adverb, (2) part of a fixed phrase, (3) a pro-form, and (4) a conjunction phrase specifying purpose. This study aims to show the wide variability among EFL learners with different L1s, identifying the tendency of usage both common among and specific to the sub-groups of EFL learners. The findings suggest that the learners demonstrate patterns distinctively different from those of L1 English speakers, indicating an underuse of so as a marker expressing "purpose" and an overuse as part of fixed phrases. Compared to L1 English speakers, the learners also tend to overuse so in the discourse marker functions, regardless of their L1s. The study proposes pedagogical implications focusing on discourse flow and diachronic aspects of so in order to understand its multifunctionality, although the latter is primarily suggested for advanced learners.

한국 언론과 5.18 광주민주화운동 담론: "동아일보"의 보도 기사와 사설을 중심으로 (A Study on 5.18 Discourse in Korean Newspaper: An Analysis of the $Dong-A$ $Ilbo$)

  • 지난 30년간 한국의 정치 변동 과정에서 5.18 담론은 가장 논쟁적인 이슈 중 하나였다. 이 연구의 목적은 한국의 대표적 신문 중의 하나인 "동아일보"를 대상으로 그 지면에 나타난 5.18 담론의 주요 특징과 변화 양상을 살피고, 한국의 정치 사회적 맥락과는 어떠한 연관을 맺고 있는지를 밝히는 것이다. 구체적으로 이 연구에서는 "동아일보" 지면에 나타난 5.18 관련 용어에 대한 분석과 사설 보도에 대한 질적 담론 분석을 통해서 1980년부터 2008년까지 "동아일보"가 구성하고 있는 5.18 담론을 분석하였다. 분석 결과 "동아일보"에서 5.18을 지칭하는 용어는 초기 지배적 용어로 광주사태가 사용되다가 1983년 유화국면 이후 광주민중항쟁, 광주학살, 광주항쟁, 광주의거와 같은 대항담론의 용어들이 차례로 등장하고, 1989년 이후 광주민주화운동이 지배적 용어로 자리를 잡게 되는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고, "동아일보" 사설의 5.18 담론은 비극적 사태 담론, 진상규명 담론, 명예 회복 담론, 역사 심판 담론, 적극적 처벌 담론, 정치담론화의 순으로 전개가 된 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 "동아일보"의 5.18 담론 변화는 한국사회의 사회 정치적 변동과 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있는 것으로 분석되었으며, "동아일보" 스스로 5.18 담론의 변화를 주도하기보다는 지배담론의 변화가 발생한 후 이를 반영하며 새로운 지배담론을 공식화하는 역할을 하고 있는 것으로 분석되었다.

10대 초반 소녀들의 사춘기에 대한 담론분석 (The Discourse Analysis of Puberty in Early Teenage Girls)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to analyze the discourse of puberty in the early teenage girls. Method: The participants were 24, 11-15years old girls who were interviewed in face-to-face using a semi-structured questionnaire. The interviews were done between October 29 and December 27 2003. Analysis of the qualitative data was done in 2 steps. Results: First, the theme of the girls' puberty discourse was identifying normality and consisted of 5 categories : i) defining puberty as experiencing changes, ⅱ) acknowledging their own puberty connecting it with their definitions of puberty, ⅲ) selectively excluding/recognizing the actual pubertal changes by seeing themselves as nonsexual and negative beings, ⅳ) recognizing the pubertal changes as becoming women and making them not peculiar but normal, and ⅴ) sharing the knowledge and experience of change inactively and exclusively and resisting the dominant discourse. Three main discourse frames, marking off sexual/nonsexual, man/women, and major/minor were revealed in the second step of the analysis. They were intricately woven with each other and converged on sex. Conclusion: The girls posited themselves as being asexual, unstable, and marginal. So there is a need to help them recognize their pubertal state as physical and mental paradigmatic changes and assure their pubertal changes as positive.

Contrastive Information Processing in Discourse Comprehension

  • 담화에 있어서의 응집성과 대비 정보의 특성에 대한 언어학적 이론 연구 결과를 간단히 고찰하고, 이를 담화 이해에 있어서의 대비정보 처리 과정에 대한 인지심리학적 이론과 연결하여, 담화에서의 대비 정보의 처리과정에 대한 잠정적 모델을 제시하였다. 이 모델의 가능성을 탐색하기 위하여 단문과 장문의 글을 사용하여 실시된 8개의 실험절차와 결과를 기술하였다. 실험 결과, 대비 문장은 부호화 시에 처리시간이 더 걸리나, 인출 시에는 재인 속도가 빨랐으며 더 많은 양이 단서 회상되었다. 대비가 담화구조의 소형구조와 대형구조 수준의 어느 수준에서 일어났는가에 따라서 부호화 시간에 차이가 났으며, 대비 문장 직후 문장은 그것이 대비 상황의 갈등적 의미를 해결하여주건 안하건 간에 처리시간이 길었다. 8개의 실험 결과들이 언어학과 인지심리학에서의 응집성 연구 및 대비 연구를 통합하는 연구 틀을 발전시킴에 시사하는 바가 논의되었다.

뉴욕타임즈를 통해 분석한 패션산업 내 DE&I에 관한 신체담론 (Body discourse on DE&I in the fashion industry analyzed through The New York Times)

  • In the context of a globalized society where diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) have emerged as pivotal values, the fashion industry is undergoing scrutiny for its practices related to body DE&I. This study examines the nature of the discourse surrounding body DE&I within the fashion industry, focusing on how such discussions are shaped, disseminated, and manifested in both the industry and broader society. Critical discourse analysis is applied by utilizing, content from the New York Times and leveraging Fairclough's analytical framework encompassing textual, discursive, and social practices. The findings indicate that the New York Times emphasizes diversity, with a significant focus on the shapes and sizes of women's bodies, developing a narrative centered around women's bodies through visible and representative domains. The analysis suggests conflicted discourse, with prevailing critiques against the fashion industry's standardization of beauty and superficial inclusivity efforts. Moreover, the industry's adaptation to social demands for body DE&I is observed as sporadic, often leveraging non-normative bodies as a marketing strategy rather than genuinely embracing diversity. This study highlights the importance of continuous, in-depth discourse and social practices regarding DE&I within the fashion industry, as well as the need for systemic changes and policies that genuinely reflect societal demands for inclusivity. The findings provide a foundation for future investigations into the multifaceted relationship between fashion discourse, DE&I, and social practices, advocating for a more inclusive and critically aware fashion industry.

An Evaluation of Listening Studies concerning Discourse Signaling Cues: Focus on Research Designs

  • Although a considerable amount of research on discourse signaling cues has been conducted in reading, little attention has been paid to such cues in the area of listening. Moreover, despite the solid evidence showing that cues have beneficial effects for reading comprehension, L2 listening research has produced mixed findings about the role of cues. Such discrepancies among these findings might be due in part to inadequate research methodologies as well as the idiosyncratic features of their experimental designs. However, no study, to date, has thoroughly examined the research designs of listening comprehension studies on cues. Consequently, this study critically evaluates the present state of research designs and reporting practices of studies investigating the role of cues in listening comprehension. The present study aims to provide insights into areas that require empirical attention and systematic investigation. It also seeks to encourage improved and refined research practices for future studies. This paper is organized as follows: It will first critically review the empirical findings regarding cues in the area of L1 listening comprehension. Second, it will present a critical evaluation of L2 listening studies on cues. Finally, it will address the major research design issues of currently available listening studies and provide suggestions for improvement in future research.

담화표지 '아', '어', '음'의 성별과 연령별 사용 양상 (The pattern of use by gender and age of the discourse markers 'a', 'eo', and 'eum')

  • 이 연구는 담화 표지 '아, 어, 음'의 출현 빈도와 발화 시간, 발화 위치 등을 계량적으로 관찰하여 성별과 연령별 차이를 보이고자 하였다. 이를 위해 대용량 음성 코퍼스인 서울코퍼스를 이용하였고, Praat(ver.6.1.31)으로 음길이와 실제 발화를 확인하고, Emeditor(ver.17.6.1)로 코퍼스를 분석하고, R(ver.3.4.4)로 통계 분석하여 결과를 제시하였다. 성별에 따라 보면 여성의 경우 남성보다 단독 발화에서 '음'이 고빈도로 사용되었고, 발화 종결 위치에서의 평균 음길이 또한 길었다. 연령에 따라 보면 발화 시작 위치에서 10대에서는 '아'가, 40대는 '어'가 고빈도로 출현하는 것이 특징적이었다.

  • 본 연구는 교사의 수업 성찰이 담론 역량 변화에 작용하는 양상을 분석하여 교사 수업 전문성 개발에의 시사점을 얻는 데 목표를 두었다. 이에 중학교 수학 교사가 실제 수업을 실행한 다음, 연구자와의 협의회를 통해 수업을 성찰하는 과정에서 학생의 참여를 촉진하는 담론 역량이 어떻게 변화하는지 살펴보았다. 본 연구에서 교사는 수업 실행과 성찰을 통해, 수업 중 학생의 발표와 반응을 다루는 2가지 국면에서 자신의 담론 역량에 문제가 있음을 인식하였으며, 이를 개선하기 위한 시도를 수업에서 실행하고 재성찰하는 과정을 반복함으로써 담론 생산성과 개방성을 높여 학생의 참여를 촉진하는 변화를 보였다. 이상의 연구 결과는 교사의 수업 성찰이 담론 역량 개발과 관련되는 수업 전문성 신장에 기여함을 보여준다.
