  • This paper explores some possible interpretations of subject/object in child language, pointing out some potential problems in recent works within the minimalist framework and suggesting different views on it. Particularly, we will focus on how to identify and/or license objects, since most of the studies relevant to this issue have accounted for subjects only. Discussing the results of the studies on child language data, we will show that previous syntactic explanations on subjects, which have seemed quite attractive and refined, may not hold when accounting for objects and various aspects and properties of arguments in those child languages. In doing so, we will suggest and support a performance-based account, a discourse-based account, and a markedness account.

  • This study examined the role of contextual knowledge in cross-cultural communication between non-native speakers on an interactive web with a bulletin board system through which college students of English at Japanese and Korean universities interacted with each other discussing the topics of local and global issues. The study investigated the influence of students' relative contextual knowledge on active participation in interactions and discussed the results focusing on the use of discourse strategies for meaning negotiation. The study argues that in interactions even between non-native speakers with limited proficiency, contextual knowledge in the topic under discussion affects the degree to which they accommodate to each other during communication and suggests that the focus of teaching English as a foreign language also should be given to what kind of contextual knowledge students need to obtain and how to express it rather than what level of proficiency in English they need to acquire.

  • This study analyzed the written texts of textbook and the teacher's discourse explaining 'the relationship between quadratic functions and quadratic equations' in the 9th grade high school mathematics class. Data consisted of the lecture recordings and the textbooks were analyzed based on the Halliday's systemic functional linguistics. According to the results, the written texts of the textbook used lexico-grammatical strategies such as generalization using hyponomy of meanings, mathematical objectification through nominalization and materialization of meaning through change in themes to compose mathematical concepts. The textbook generalized from an example in the description of formulating mathematical concepts, and in this process the organizational interactions of discourse-semantic level and lexico-grammartical level appeared. On the other hand, the teacher's doscourse appeared the change in transitivity and the addition of the reasons and the process. Also the teacher used explanation process of formulating the relationship between quadratic functions and quadratic equations. The linguistic characteristics of the teacher were linguistic implication and omission of lexemes due to contextual ommission. And there was no use of structural lexico-grammatical resources that influence the discourse-semantic level. This results provide a new framework for analyzing mathematical discourse, and suggest the lexico-grammatical strategies that can be used to explain mathematical concepts by teachers in math classrooms.

  • A Discourse Analysis tool has been developed and has been applied in the cooperative group inquiry activities in order to derive the characteristics of elementary gifted students in science. We recorded and videotaped the whole group problem-solving processes where 4 elementary students worked together to solve given problems as a group for one year in a gifted education center attached to a university in Seoul. We analyzed recorded discourses using systemic functional linguistics with a focus on the structure of information and topic. The discourse analysis tool was developed with the cooperation of science education and gifted education experts. In discourse analysis, we focused on meaning development processes rather than grammatical analysis. Through application of newly developed discourse analysis tool, we confirmed that the tool is useful in understanding the characteristics of science-gifted elementary students. We also founded that the interaction between students has significant effects on problem-solving processes by comparing two students who showed contradictory features in the share of dialogue. In addition, the result suggested that we need to provide students with proper training for ways to communicate with others for effective science-gifted instruction.

  • This paper sets forth the phenomenon of Contrastive Reduplication (CR) in English relevant to the notion of contrastive focus (CF). CF differs from other reduplicative patterns in that rather than the general intensive function, denotation of a more prototypical and default meaning of a lexical item appears from the reduplicated form resulting as a semantic contrast with the meaning of the non-reduplicated word. Thus, CR is in concordance with CF under the concept of contrastivity. However, much of the previous works on CF associated contrastivity with a manufacture of a set of alternatives taking a semantic approach. We claim that a recent discourse-pragmatic account takes advantage of explaining the vague contrast in informativeness of CR. Zimmermann's (2006) Contrastive Focus Hypothesis characterizes contrastivity in the sense of speaker's assumptions about the hearer's expectation of the focused element. This approach makes possible adaptation to CR and recovers the possible subsets of meaning of a reduplicated form in a more refined way showing contrastivity in informativeness. Additionally, CR in other languages along with similar set-limiting phenomenon in various languages will be introduced in general.

  • 1. Background and Purpose ${\ulcorner}$DongyiSooseBowon${\lrcorner}$ is the book that was mixed ${\ulcorner}$GaboBon${\lrcorner}$ and ${\ulcorner}$KyungjaBon${\lrcorner}$ which was written by DongMu. But hardly any clause or text of the GaboBon excepting ${\ulcorner}$DongyiSooseBowon${\lrcorner}$ has been described. At the year of 2000, the society of sasang constitutional medicine acqired ${\ulcorner}$HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon${\lrcorner}$ which is seen as a written copy of ${\ulcorner}$GaboBon${\lrcorner}$. According to Lee Sung-Su who is the great-grandson of DongMu's older brother, ${\ulcorner}$HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon${\lrcorner}$ was worked by Lee Jin-Yoon who is the grandson of DongMu's older brother, and it was copied by Han Min-Gab and now is owned by Lee Sung-Su who is son of Lee Jin- Yoon. 2. Methods This paper was written in order to understand of ${\ulcorner}$HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon${\lrcorner}$ through the study to focus on the bibliographical character. 3. Result and Conclusion 1) It is reasonable that ${\ulcorner}$HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon${\lrcorner}$ had copied to the original ${\ulcorner}$DongyiSoose Bowon GaboGubon${\lrcorner}$ which was written by DongMu. 2) We can find the character of ${\ulcorner}$HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon${\lrcorner}$ as follows. (1) It has the table of contents, the definition of the number of the texts, and the article number of each texts. (2) ${\ulcorner}$KyungJaBon${\lrcorner}$ and ${\ulcorner}$SinchukBon${\lrcorner}$ has different number of the texts about ${\ulcorner}$The general remarks on the Soyangin${\lrcorner}$. (3) It is different with original ${\ulcorner}$GaboBon${\lrcorner}$ because of the extracting marks of the text. (4) It is supposed that it has the pares which was additionally or wrongly amended by someone. 3) We can consider that the character of original ${\ulcorner}$GaboBon${\lrcorner}$ which was written by DongMu from ${\ulcorner}$HamsanSachon DongyiSooseBowon GaboGubon${\lrcorner}$ as follows. (1) ${\ulcorner}$The Discourse on Nature and Order${\lrcorner}$${\sim}$${\ulcorner}$The Discourse on the Four Principles${\lrcorner}$ is original articles of ${\ulcorner}$GaboBon${\lrcorner}$. (2) The head title of${\ulcorner}$The Discourse on the Origin of Oriental Medicine${\lrcorner}$ was not in ${\ulcorner}$GaboBon${\lrcorner}$. (3) It is not clear whether ${\ulcorner}$The Discourse on the General Health Maintenance${\lrcorner}$ and ${\ulcorner}$The Discourse on Identifying Four Constitutions${\lrcorner}$ is original texts or amended texts of ${\ulcorner}$GaboBon${\lrcorner}$. • Since late 1960s, we have had the discourse about the way of succession of korean traditional architectural heritage. Through 60s and 70s, the formal mimesis and transformation was pretty much dominated in domestic design currents. After 80s, we could see a kind of different ways of design to deal with traditions in architectural practices. These methodology can be summarized as spatiality, abstraction and diversity. These discourses acted as bases for aesthetic and formal stream which might be needed to present the formal possibilities for various commercial needs. Especially, the interior design field utilized those ideas in order to show korean identity for the commercial needs such as korean restaurant, korean bar, or korean costume shop. Interior designers positively adapted the ideas from architectural discourse and created their own vocabulary after 90s. Before 90s, interior designers did very representational mimesis to express korean identity designing commercial facilities. However from mid 90s they could establish new tendencies in expressing korean traditional moods. These tendencies are a focus on spatial relationship, abstraction and materiality, utilization of traditional objects and lighting method.

  • The paper demonstrates the potential contribution of integrating discursive and affective analytic regimes in framing the study of Southeast Asia. I examine the "emotional possibilities" available to migrants with particular focus on the experience of Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong thrown into relief in 2016 by news of maids falling to their deaths while cleaning windows of their employers' above-ground apartments. First, I situate the study in recent calls for Critical Discourse Studies and Migration Studies to transcend foundational methodologies in their respective fields in order to apprehend formerly disregarded aspects of the human condition, including affect and emotion. I then briefly present the debate in the affective turn in social analysis, which has to do with rethinking the attachment of affect and discourse. My own inquiry is premised on the assertion that emotion is multidimensional. I specifically explore the usefulness of taking emotion as "affective-discursive practice" by focusing on an analysis of the appropriation of the victim role by foreign domestic helper employer groups that could be seen in pertinent news reports of selected online Hong Kong newspapers. In the end, I also emphasize the necessity of reflexivity in projects that take affect as central object of inquiry.

  • Elliptical fragments are common in natural language dialogues between humans. Since most elliptical fragments should be interpeted within the context. it is not easy for computers to recognize the speaker's intention from the elliptical fragments. In t this paper we propose a model to recognize speaker's intention from elliptical fragments 1 in Korean by expanding the tripartite plan-based model proposed by Lambert. We add new discourse recipes to define user's discourse actions through elliptical fragments. In order to use plan inference process. we must represent utterances as actions. e. g .. r e elliptical fragments are represented as surface speech acts. In surface speech act representation. we include the information of 'Josa' (case markers in Korean), because t the information of 'Josa' plays a very important role in analysing speakers' intention in Korean. Finally. by using an object and discourse focus theory, the system can recognize the intention that a user is trying to compare between two plans by uttering elliptical fragments
