  • A simple wide-viewing-angle solution of electrically controlled birefringence (ECB) LCD is proposed, which is based on a single discotic compensation film. The use of a single discotic film instead of two leads to a considerable reduction in cost while high performance is maintained.

  • We have investigated about compensation film to reduce the light leakage at an oblique angle in-plane switching mode. It is well known that uncompensated in-plane switching (US) and fringe field switching (FFS) liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have much better viewing angle than other modes owing to the in-plane rotation of the LC director. However, to accomplish optimal viewing angle characteristics in these devices, they must be compensated by one or more films. So, in this paper, we have studied how to reduce the light leakage with viewing angle using discotic film in dark state.

  • The discotic liquid crystal in compensating film used for the viewing angle improvement of the twist nematic liquid crystal display panel is analyzed. For the optical characterization of the compensating film, we measured the polarization state of the light passing through the film as the tilt angle and the azimuth angle of the film were varied, and then we compared the measured polarization state with the calculated one. Finally we suggested the best fit configuration of the discotic liquid crystal.

  • Film compensation to suppress a light leakage in the dark state of fringe-field switching (FFS) at off normal direction was performed by optimizing retardation value of discotic (negative A) and TAC films including in-plane switching (IPS). The normal FFS mode shows wide viewing angle characteristics that region of CR 10:1 is over $70^{\circ}$ of polar angle in all directions. The optimized FFS cell exhibits much better performances than other methods do in terms of CR and color uniformity.

  • The WV film successfully enlarged the field of view of the TN mode and made TN popular for larger size applications such as PC monitors. The hybrid alignment of the PDM (polymerized discotic material) layer is also suited for the OCB mode, which is promising as a nextgeneration LCD-TV because of fast panel response and a wide viewing angle. This paper describes recent technological progress in WV films, especially for OCB.

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics to improve viewing angle of the in-plain switching (IPS) liquid crystal display using an compensation film. The IPS mode shows relatively large light leakage and color shift in diagonal directions in a dark state. To solve this problem, we have compensated the low contrast ratio in diagonal directions using one optimized discotic film and adjusting TAC films of polarizers. The compensated IPS mode shows wide viewing angle characteristics that region of CR 50:1 is over $60^{\circ}$ of polar angle in all directions. The optimized IPS cell exhibits much better performances than other methods do in terms of CR and color uniformity.

  • TAC film is an indispensable optical component that protects the polarizing PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) film from being deteriorated and gives high durability, due to its unique features. The newly developed technology of controlling the birefringence of TAC film, together with the coating technology of a discotic material layer, enables excellent viewing angle characteristics and a cost-effective roll-to-roll polarizer manufacturing process.

  • Optical compensation films are widely used to enlarge viewing angle characteristics for LCDs. A new surface film with an inner light scattering layer was newly developed to improve gray scale inversion. This paper describes technologies regarding these films that enhance the viewing angle characteristics for LCDs.

  • We have successfully commercialized a novel optical compensation film, OCB-WV film, for OCB-LCD-TVs which has fast response time and wide viewing angle. The OCB-WV film consists of a 45degree-aligned discotic layer and a high Rth biaxial TAC film, which is suited for a roll-to-roll polarizer manufacturing process. This OCB-WV has brought out the excellent features that OCB intrinsically has, making nextgeneration fast-response LCD-TVs possible and free from image blurring in conjunction with an impulsive driving scheme.

  • Anisotropy profile of a rubbed polyimide film is investigated using both a modified ultra high precision transmission ellipsometer and the analysis software previously developed to determine the optic axis distribution of discotic liquid crystals in the wide view film. The distorted sinusoidal variation of the ellipsometric constants obtained at an oblique angle of incidence indicates that the optic axis varies from $14.7^{\circ}$ to $40.6^{\circ}$ from the sample plane. The magnitude and distribution of anisotropy is expressed in terms of no, ne, and the cosine-shaped tilt angle distribution of the optic axis in a rubbed polyimide film.
