  • Kimchi is one of the representative traditional foods in Korea, which is recognized as a kind of wellbeing foodstuffs. However, as increasing foreign-made Kimchi, its safety as food is at the forefront of public health concerns. We analyzed the washing methods of Chinese cabbages, which are the main materials in Kimchi, to prevent parasite contamination during preparing it. To decontaminate parasite eggs from Chinese cabbages, discard the discolored outer leaves from cabbages, spread the space of leaves with fingers and rinse more than 3 separate water tanks with streaming water (velocity more than 0.8m/sec). At each tank, Chinese cabbages were rinsed with more than 3 strokes upward and downward within the streaming water followed by moving back and forth more than 3 times, with 20cm in height and 30cm in width, respectively. Decontamination efficiency increased higher in parallel with streaming velocity of water, and with adding the vegetable detergent to the tank water.

  • In April of 2002, the gray mold disease occurred severely on kalanchoe (Kalanch oe blossfeldiana) grown in a nursery in Daesan-myon, Changwon City, Korea. The lesions were started with water-soaked spot and the leaves discolored from the tip and became gray or dark and gradully expanded to whole leaf. The conidia and mycelia of pathogen appearedd on flower, flower stalk and stem. Conidia were gray, 1-celled, mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape and were 8~17 ${\times}$5~12${\mu}m$ in size. Conidiophores were 13~34${\mu}m$ in size. The sclerotia were formed abundantly on potato-dextrose agar. The optimum temperature for sclerotial formation was $20^{\circ}C$. Pathogenicity of the causal organism was proved on Kalanchoe blossfeldiana according to Koch,s postulate. The causal organism was identified as Botrytis cinerea based on mycological characteristics. This is the first report on gray mold of Kalanchoe(Kalanchoe blossfeldiana) caused by Botrytis cinerea in Korea.

  • The wooden Ksitigarbha Triad Statues (Treasure No. 1749) of Shinhungsa temple in Sokcho are enshrined in the inside of the Myeonbujeon Hall. The Statues are highly damaged physical weathering which are crack and exfoliation. Also, the Statues were deteriorated by chemical and biological weathering. This study carried out nondestructive method as deterioration map, ultrasonic measurement, X-ray and endoscopy survey for deterioration evaluation and conservation plan. As a result, Ksitigarbha Statue coated by dust and various pollutants. And gold-gilt of Statue's surface has peeled off. Head part of Mudokguiwang Statue was discolored from water leak in Myeongbujeon Hall. Domyeongjonja Statue is highly damaged by insects. Result of endoscopy, there were bee hives in the inside of the Statue. Therefore, we suggest that these Statues have need to do conservation treatment on the basis of diagnostic results.

  • In the past, a very popular method for reducing the corrosion on zinc involved the use of chemical conversion layer coatings based on $Cr^{+6}$. However, there is an important problem with using chromium salts as a result of restrictive environmental protection legislation. This study investigated the optimum condition for galvanized steel using an organic/inorganic solution with a Ti composition. In the case of a fixed heat treatment time, the corrosion resistance values of LR-0727(1) and LR-0727(2) were improved as the heat treatment temperature increased, and the optimum minimum temperature decreased with the heat treatment time. At the optimum heat treatment condition of two coating solutions, the heat treatment time of the LR-0727(1) solution was shorter than LR-0727(2) for the same heat treatment temperature. LR-0727(1) coated specimens did not show desquamation, and all of the specimens showed a good adhesive property. In contrast, in the case of the LR-0727(2) coated specimens, desquamation arose. Therefore, the adhesive property of LR-0727(1) was superior to that of LR-0727(2). The pencil hardness had a 3H average for all of the coating solutions and heat treatment conditions. In the case of a corrosion resistance test with boiling water, the coated specimens of LR-0727(1) were discolored, but LR-0727(2) was not. Finally, LR-0727(1) was more moisture proof than LR-0727(2).

  • Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea on Agastache rugosa was occurred at a field of Jinju from 2003 to 2005. The disease symptoms started with water-soaked lesions in the leaves and stem, then these infected lesions became withered, discolored, rotten and died eventually. The fungal pathogen was isolated from the lesions. The fungal conidia were one-celled and mostly ellipsoid or ovoid in shape and light gray in color and $4{\sim}20{\times}4{\sim}13\;{\mu}m$ in size. The fungal conidiophores were $14{\sim}28\;{\mu}m$ in width. The Pathogen formed sclerotia abundantly on PDA. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation was $20^{\circ}C$. Pathogenicity of the causal organism was proved according to Koch's postulates. On the basis of symptom, mycological characteristics and pathogenicity test, the fungus was identified as Botrytis cinerea. This is the first report on gray mold of Agastache rugosa caused by B. cinerea in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color changes of the composite resin resulting from xenon lamp exposure in different environments. Composite resin (Z 250 ; shade Al, A2, A3, A3.5, and A4) were applied in a cylindrical metal mold. Seventy five specimens according to environments of exposure were made as follows; Group I aluminum foiling of the specimens in the air at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 day and 7 days. Group II : exposure of xenon lamp to the specimens in the air at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 day and 7 days. Group III: exposure of xenon lamp to the specimens in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 day and 7 days. The color characteristics ($L^{*},a^{*},b^{*}$) of the specimens before and after exposure of xenon lamp were measured by spectrophotometer and the total color differences (${\Delta}E^{*}$) were computed. The results obtained were as follows : 1. In all groups except A1 shade of group III, the ${\Delta}E^{*}$ values presented below 2.0, and group III showed the highest ${\Delta}E^{*}$ values followed by group II and group I in a decreasing order(p<0.05). 2 In all shades and groups, the more the exposure time of xenon lamp and the lighter the shade were, the higher the tendency for discoloration (p<0.05). 3. The composite resins which was exposed to xenon lamp in the distilled water was more discolored than those in the air (p<0.05). 4. The major changes of composite resins which were exposed to xenon lamp in the air were an increase in yellowness through a positive shift of the $b^{*}$ value, and those in the distilled water were an increase in darkness and yellowness through a negative shift of the $L^{*}$ value and a positive shift of the $b^{*}$ value.
