The tidal discharge is defined as the quantity of water flowing through a certain cross-section per unit of time, in contrast to river discharges, tidal discharges change periodically in magnitude and direction. Thus the total volumes of water flowing into again out of the system-called flood volume and ebb volume, respectively, depend on both the tidal and the river discharges. To ditermine the tidal discharge and the flood and ebb volumes of the Yong-san river, the discharges were measured at spring, mean and neap tide and simultaneous gage reading were taken at Samhak-do, Lower Myo-do, Myongsan-ni and Naju. The general procedure for measuring the tidal discharges was as follows. First, several cross-sections were measured and one of them was chosen. First, several cross-sections were measured and one of them was chosen. Then verticals were serected in the chosen cross section. Because comparatively few verticals should be representative of the discharge distribution over the river profile, the selection was done in accordance with the somtimes irregular bottom profile. The velocities were measured with the same current meters. The observations which included water level readings were continued for a period of about 13 hours. The current direction meter, a pyramid shaped resistance body, suspend in the water on a thin wire. The bubble in a circular tilting level fixed to the wire indicates the direction of the current. Reading were taken at intervals of 1m for depths of 10m or less, and for depths over 10m at intervals of 2m, going downwards and upwards. The averages of the two velocities were used for the computation of the discharges. The discharges and the flood and ebb volumes were ditermined by a graphical method. The mean velocities, corrected for their direction when necesary, were ditermined for each time interval and each vertical, and these velocities were plotted against the time. The resulting curves show possible mistakes very clearly, and the effect of observation errors could be reduced. The corrected velocities read from the curve at half-hour intervals were multiplied by the depth at the virtical at the corresponding time. The discharges thus found were ploted against the position of the vertical in the transit and joined by a smooth curve, integration of the curve rendered the total discharges as they occurred of half-hour intervals. Plotting these total discharges against the time yeilded during the day. The flood and ebb volumes were obtained by integration of the total discharge curve.
In this paper, using a wide-band AE sensor with the frequency range from 100[kHz] to 1.5[kHz], the frequency spectra of AE signals generated from the corona discharges of the needle-plane gap and from the partial discharges of an epoxy void were analyzed to determine the proper ultrasonic sensor with optimum frequency range according to the patterns of corona discharges. We also examined the propagation characteristics of AE signals in oil and the relationship between the magnitude of corona discharge and the magnitude of AE signals in peak-to-peak value under the application of 60[Hz] ac high-voltage. From these results, the main frequency spectra of AE signals emitted from the corona discharges of the needle-plane gap were about 130[kHz] by the fast fourier transform, but the main frequency spectra appeared to be 230[kHz] in the partial discharges of an epoxy void. The magnitude of AE signals was proportional to the magnitude of corona discharge and discharge current pulse with increasing the applied voltages.
In this paper, in order to obtain the statistic information for parameters of electric and magnetic field waveforms associated with lightning discharges, the electric and magnetic fields produced by lightning discharges in the summer of 1995 were measured by a hemisphere-type electric field sensor and a loop-type magnetic field sensor, which were installed at the campus of Inha University in Inchon. The signals of the electric and magnetic fields were continuously recorded by a transient digitizer having a resolution of 12 bit and a memory capacity of 5000 point. Negative lightning discharges are produced very more than positive lightning discharges in the summer of Korea. The 10 to 90 % rise time of electric and magnetic fields was 2 $2\;{\sim}\;10\;{\mu}s$. And the zero-crossing time of electric field was $15\;{\sim}\;25\;{\mu}s$, whereas that of magnetic field was $20\;{\sim}\;30\;{\mu}s$.
In this work, to obtain the detailed information about lightning electromagnetic field waveforms, the LabVIEW based-measurement system of time-changing magnetic fields was designed and constructed. The frequency bandwidth of the magnetic field measuring system ranges from 300 [Hz] to 1 [MHz], and the response sensitivity is 2.78 [mV/nT]. Data acquisition system with the resolution of 12 bits and memory capacity of 32 [Mbyte] was triggered by the magnetic field to be measured. The properties and parameters of the magnetic fields produced by cloud discharges were statistically investigated. The magnetic field waveforms radiated from cloud lighting discharges tend to be bipolar, with two or more narrow and several pulses superimposed on the initial front part. The recording length of the magnetic field measurement system is about 10 [ms]. The mean duration of cloud discharges is 1.3 [ms], and the number of outburst pulses for the period is 8 in average. The front times of the magnetic fields are 6.15 [$\mu$s] in average. The the zero-to-zero crossing times that is the initial half-cycle duration is widely dispersed and the mean value is 9.61 [$\mu$s], and the mean value of percentage depth of dip to opposite polarity is 41.1 [$\%$].
This paper deals with the fundamental characteristics of transient and conventional ground impedances associated with soil discharges when the lightning impulse voltage was applied to a small-sized ground rod. The potential rise responses of the test ground rod to impulse currents were observed. The current-voltage (I-V)curves, transient and conventional ground impedance curves were examined.. To analyze the transient behaviors of ground rod attendant upon soil discharges, the impulse responses of ground rod were compared with those of non-inductive resistor. As a consequence, the potential rise and impedance of ground rod were reduced and the currents dispersed into the earth were increased due to soil discharges near the ground rod. Soil discharges are classified into two regimes; ionization and breakdown phenomena. The potential rise and impulse impedance of ground rod are significantly decreased by breakdown processes in soil.
Surface corona discharge characteristics of a dc corona charged ferroelectric pellet barrier have been investigated experimentally. Electric charges stored on the surfaces of the ferroelectric pellets by a dc corona discharge provide partial electric fields on the surfaces of the ferroelectric pellets, which could generate surface corona discharges on the ferroelectric pellets. This system utilizes both the surface discharges on the ferroelectric pellet barrier and the corona discharge between corona tip and mesh electrode. Positive and negative dc voltages were applied to the tip to generate partial discharges, and corona currents were estimated to investigate the buildup charge on ferroelectric pellets as a function of the applied time and the charge relaxation time constants of ferroelectric pellets. As a result, in the case of the negative corona discharge with the ferroelectric pellet barrier, the mean corona current and ozone generation increase greatly, and the surface discharges on the ferroelectric pellets can be fenerated efficiently. It is also found that, charge relaxation time, dielectric constants offerroelectric pellets, polarity of applied voltage and applied time affected to the surface discharges among the ferroelectric pellets.

A common feature in the three-dimensional numerical model experiments of coastal discharge with simplified model and idealized external forcings is investigated. The velocity fields due to the buoyancy and flaw flux, are spreaded radiately and the surface velocites are much greater than the homegeneous discharges. The coastal dischargd due to the Coriolis force and flaw flux are shaped a anticyclical gyre (clockwise) and determined the scale of the gyre in the coastal zone, respectively. The bottom topography restricts a outward extention of the coastal fronts and it accelerates a southward flow.
A stochastic model to predict radio interference field as caused by corona discharges on high voltage transmission lines has been developed. This model is based on corona discharge distributed randomly in time and space. A stochastic model for the corona current induced by corona discharges on power lines is proposed. On the basis of the proposed corona current model, a rigorous analysis is presented to evaluate the radio interference (RI) field caused by corona discharges on a single conductor using the stochastic method.
Low pressure radio-frequency glow discharges are investigated using theoretical modeling and various experimental diagnostic methods. In the calculations, global models and transformer models are developed to understand the chemical kinetics as well as the electrical properties such as the effective collision frequency, the heating mechanism and the power transferred to the plasma electrons. In addition, Boltzmann equation solver is used to compensate the effect of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) shape in the global model, and the general expression of energy balance for non-Maxwellian electrons is developed. In the experiments, a number of traditional plasma diagnostic methods are used to compare with calculated results such as Langmuir probe, optical emission spectroscopy (OES), optical absorption spectroscopy (OAS) and two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence (TALIF). These theoretical and experimental methods are applied to understand several interesting phenomena in low pressure ICP discharges. The chemical and physical properties of low pressure ICP discharges are described and the applications of these methods are discussed.
