  • The conventional Flow Duration Curve has limitations that it does not consider hydrologic persistence of daily discharge, that the daily discharge is greatly affected by the maximums or minimums, and that the date of occurrence and duration of a specific discharge cannot be known. In this study, we propose a Daily Mode Discharge Curve, which consists of aligning the daily discharge each year by the date of occurrence, calculating the daily mode discharge, and averaging them every 5 days. As a result of reviewing the long-term observational daily discharge data at 8 points upstream and downstream of the mainstream of the 4 major rivers in Korea, it was found that the daily discharge at all points shows hydrological persistence, and the distortion of it was alleviated by using Daily Mode Discharge Curve. We also suggest that the Daily Mode Discharge Curve is useful for utilizing reference discharge such as Drought, Low, Normal, Plentiful, and Flood Discharge.

  • Flow duration curves provide a compact summary of streamflow variability. In this study, characteristics of the dimensionless flow duration curve in natural rivers with the unregulated discharge were investigated. An analysis of flow duration characteristics was conducted with discharge data at stage-gauging stations of IHP representative basins and of the major rivers in Korea. Discharge characteristics are dependent on area of watershed. However, flow duration coefficients except drought duration coefficient are independent on that. Abundant flow duration coefficient was constant value. The coefficient of flow duration variability defined in this study as the ratio of the normal stream flow over the drought one is decreased with increasing of the watershed area, which implies that the watershed area affects the drought flow duration variability more than the low flow one. And the coefficient of flow duration variability is increased with the river gradient.

  • This study has been carried out to clarify the characteristics of discharge and pollutant loading according to flow conditions at jiseok stream watershed (JSW). A flow rate and pollutant load in the study watershed were estimated by equation of stage-discharge and discharge-loads rating curve. By using the methods above, I've evaluated the water quality (WQ) of the JSW if it is satisfied with the standard target. I've collected the data of BOD and T-P from the JSW every 8 days for the duration of 12 months. And then, I've schematized the data upon the load duration curve and the results showed me that the WQ of JSW was satisfied with the standard target. I've also collected the same data every each day for the duration of 12 months from JSW and have schematized the data again. And the results showed that it also was satisfied with the standard target. To be concluded, I've determined that point pollution sources of JSW gives more significant impacts to the WQ than non-point pollution sources of JSW and hence, as time goes, point pollution sources will keep depriciating the WQ of JSW. Therefore, further efforts will be required to JSW to maintain the WQ.

  • Total maximum daily load have been implemented and indicated that nonpoint discharge coeffients in flow duration curve were 0.50 of Normal flow duration ($Q_{185}$) and 0.15 of low flow duration($Q_{275}$). By using SWAT, nonpoint discharge coefficients are studied with the conditions of the instream flow and the rainfall in two study areas. The nonpoint discharge coefficient average of BOD and TP for normal flows duration in 3 years are 0.32~0.36 and 0.28~0.31. For the low flow duration, the nonpoint discharge coefficient avergae of BOD and TP were 0.10~0.12 and 0.10~0.11. These are lower than the coefficients of total maximum load regulation. There are big differences between one of regulation and one of SWAT for the normal flow duration. With the consideration of rainfall condition, the nonpoint discharge coefficient of flood flow duration are influenced on the amount of rainfalls. However, the nonpoint discharge coefficients of normal flow duration and low flow duration are not effected by the rainfall condition. Since the spatial distribution and geomorphological characteristics could be considered with SWAT, the estimation of nonpoint discharge coefficient in watershed model is better method than the use of the recommended number in the regulation.

  • In this study a general analysis method for watersheds with the entire runoff conditions and corresponding water quality is proposed and its applicability based on the currently available information is investigated. Using the 8-day-interval data set of runoff and water quality observed by Nakdong River Environment Research Center, the flow duration curve and discharge-load relation curve for each unit watershed are established, then the load duration curve is finally constructed. This paper discusses how the load duration curve can be used in the assessment of TMDL. The entire Nakdong river watershed is also divided into prior managing areas of point sources or non-point sources in a way of general management. It is thought that LDC can be a great tool for visualizing overall probabilities of current water quality and thus for the TMDL management.

  • This study was conducted to identify runoff characteristics of pollutants using flow duration curve(FDC) and load duration curve(LDC) in Youngbon A watershed during 2009~2011. A flow rate and pollutant load in the study watershed were estimated by equation of stage-discharge and discharge-loads rating curve. From these methods, BOD, T-N, and T-P have evaluated whether water quality standards would have attained. Results showed that BOD loads of about 50% plotted above the LDC, while T-N and T-P loads of about 50% plotted below the curve. It means that BOD of about 50% have exceeded the water quality criteria, while T-N and T-P of about 50% have complied with the water quality standards. Meanwhile, BOD, TN and T-P loads plotted above the LDC of low flows, implying that they were more affected by point pollution sources than nonpoint pollution sources in the study watershed.

  • This work is for examining a simplified equation based on the rational formula, which can easily decide storm-water detention volume in small urban catchments. The storm-water detention volume is determined by the inflow hydrograph flowing to detention basin and the outflow hydrograph discharged from the detention basin. The ratio of average outflow over the period of rainfall duration against allowable discharge was 0.5 in former simplified equation. But this research has found that the average outflow ratio depends on the storage methodology. In the case of the on-line storage method, the average outflow ratio is a function of the time of concentration of the catchments and rainfall duration, which ranged from 0.5~1.0. In the case of the off-line storage method, the average ratio is a function of peak discharge and allowable discharge except above time of concentration and rainfall duration, where its function value ranged from 1.0~2.0. When applying this equation to small catchment in Mokpo city, South Korea, we could easily calculate the relation curve between the storm-water detention volume and allowable discharge.

  • In this study, we discussed the application of Watershed model and Load Duration Curves (LDC) in Total Water Load Management System. The Flow Duration Curves (FDC) and the LDC were generated using the results of the daily HSPF model and analyzed on monthly or yearly flow duration variability, and non-point pollutant discharge loads by entire flow conditions. As a result of the calibration and verification of the HSPF model, both the flow and the water quality were appropriately simulated. The simulated values were used to generate the Flow Duration Curve and the Load Duration Curve, and then the excess rate by entire flow conditions was analyzed. The point and non-point pollutant discharge loads for entire flow conditions were calculated. It is possible to evaluate the variability of water quality in specific flow duration through the curves reflecting the flow duration variability and to confirm the characteristics of the pollutant source. For a more scientific Total Water Load Management System, it is necessary to switch from a current system to a system that can take into account the entire flow conditions. For this, the application of the watershed model and load duration curve is considered to be the best alternative.

  • In this study, flow duration analysis was conducted at the Gumbo stage gauging station due to construction of the Youngchun dam. The flow duration characteristics were $10.49\;m^3/s$ of drought flow, $13.30\;m^3/s$. of low flow, $15.65\;m^3/s$ of normal flow, and $25.00\;m^3/s$ abundant flow before construction of Youngchun dam. But after construction of Youngchun dam, the flow duration characteristics were $2.07\;m^^3/s,\;2.89\;m^3/s,\;4.0\;m^3/s,\;9.36\;m^3/s$ and they had been deteriorated. Applying the Physical Habitat Simulation Model by Instream Flow Incremental Methodology, the Weighted Usable Area(WUA)-Discharge Curve was developed for Zacco Platypus according to the growth stages. Using the WUA-Discharge Curve, the WUA Duration Curve was developed with exceedance probability of daily flow and evaluated fish habitat conditions due to the construction of Youngchun dam. As an evaluation result, the WUA was reduced and fish habitat environment was deteriorated due to the construction of Youngchun dam during the spawning and growth period of Zacco Platypus. However the exceedence probability of the $90\;\%$, irrigation water supply from the Youngchun dam improved flow duration characteristics and Weighted Usable Area as well as fish habitat.

  • Duration curves describe the percentage of time that a certain water quality (total/fecal coliform (=TC/FC)) or discharge is exceeded. The curves methodology are usually based on daily records and are useful in estimating how many days per year and event will be exceeded. The technique was further applied to estimated TC/FC loading to the Geumho River, using the daily mean flow rate and TC/FC concentration data during January, 2001 and December, 2011 for the Geumhogang6 (=Seongseo water level station) where an automated monitoring station is located in Gangchang-bridge. Low flow of the Seongseo (=11.1 cms) was equivalent to 75.3% on an exceedance probability scale. Load Duration curve for TC/FC loading at the Seongseo was constructed. Standard load duration curve was constructed with the water quality criteria for class III (TC/FC concentration = 5000/1000 CFU/ 100 mL). By plotting TC/FC observed load duration curve with standard load duration curve, it could be revealed that water quality do not meet the desired water quality for 68.8/11.2% on an exceedance probability scale. IF linear correlation between flow rate and coliform concentration is assumed, it can be interpreted that water quality exceed desired criteria when daily average flow rate is over 11.9/109.9 cms.
