  • If a conventional type of Plastic Board Drain (PBD) is installed to the deep clay deposit, it is subjected to a high lateral earth pressure. a flow channel of PBD may be reduced by the collapse of cores and clogged by the intrusion of filter into the space between cores which are made by lateral pressure. It could decrease the ability of initial discharge capacity and the reliability of long term discharge capacity. A cylindrical plastic board drain (C-PBD) considered in this study consists of cylindrical core and several supports so that it can prevent the reduction of area of flow channel from the higher lateral earth pressure effectively. The discharge capacity of C-PBD was compared to that of a conventional PBD through performing experiments using the composite discharge capacity apparatus which can consider in-situ condition such as penetration of drains, ground settlement and discharge capacity. As a result, C-PBD showed much better performance than PBD in the ability of discharge. It was observed that the C-PBD was folded whereas the conventional PBD was folded after the experiment.

  • Recently PBD method, one of acceleration of consolidation methods is used in the soft ground to shorten consolidation time for fast settlement during construction. It is economical and easy to work. Discharge capacity of PBD is sensitive in proportion to thickness of soft ground layer, and drainage of PBD declines due to disturbance effect in surrounding ground by mandrel used for vertical drainage setting and setting machines and type. Also, deviation of discharge capacity is large according to ground condition, construction condition and soil properties. In addition, when embankment loading is not conducted instantly after PBD setting due to rain or lack of embankment material supply, it causes leaving period problems. But cause and analysis of those problems for discharge capacity is lack. So, in this test, ground improvement and discharge capacity is investigated by implementing composite discharge capacity test for analysis of an effect factor of PBD discharge capacity with leaving period. After fixing the vertical drain on a cylindrical cylinder, put churned sample into the cylinder. Then leave 0day, 30day, 60day and 90day. And then, load following the loading step of 30, 70 and 120kPa using a pressure device. As a result, the longer leaving period, discharge capacity is reduced. It is caused by a decrease of discharge area caused by creep transformation moisture absorption of PBD filter after long leaving period.

  • Recently, because of environment, cost, supply and demand factors, though applying sea-sand as horizontal drains is getting difficult that usage of Gravel has been growing in large size of construction sites, Study on engineering properties and behavior characteristics of Gravel stratum is not thoroughgoing enough. We have applied Gravel Mat as the horizontal drains in O O construction site. We also conducted several field tests such as Material property test, Geosynthetics damage test with Repeated load, Discharge capacity test performed by inflow of upper soil and In-situ PBD Penetration test to review the application of Gravel Mat. Test results show that Gravel Mat is not only advantageous in Trafficability and Water drainage by Consolidation due to its great Internal friction angle and Permeability, but also easy to penetrate with Mandrel and has great discharge capacity and guarantee of the stability against geosynthetics damage at the same time. With these benefits Gravel Mat shows great application in fields.

  • Typically, soft clay improvement is carried out using installation of PVD and surcharge method. According to circumstances, installed PVD has left for a long time due to the change in construction schedule. Therefore, for simulation of this kind of condition, discharge capacity tests were carried out under a series of temperature condition (30, 35, $40^{\circ}C$). The results indicated that under water confinement, the discharge capacities significantly reduced with elapsed time. And, the empirical equation by Miura and Chai (2000) was used for estimating the long-term in-clay discharge capacity. Based on the test results, it is recommended that in term of long-term discharge capacity, Miura and Chai's equation and reliability evaluation using discharge capacity tests under a series of temperature condition may be used.

  • The use of vertical drain method to improve the soft soil ground has been continuously increased in Korea such as Busan New Port, Saemangeum reclamation project and so on in Korea. Especially PBD(Plastic Board Drain), one of the vertical drain, has been widely used due to the economic feasibility, construction compatibility and quality control. However in case of using PBD, discharge capacity reduction caused by creep deformation of the PBD filter, bending, kinking and so on can be occurred. Therefore the purpose of this study is to solve these problems by developing Deformation-Compatible Vertical Drain, DCVD which allows to deform with consolidation settlement without bending and kinking of vertical drain. In order to investigate the performance of DCVD developed in this study, discharge capacity test, centrifuge model test and complex discharge capacity test for both PBD and DCVD are performed and the results are compared.

  • Electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs) which are fabricated using carbon based electrodes have been emerging at an alarming rate to fulfill the energy demand in the present day world. Activated charcoal has been accepted as a very suitable candidate for electrodes but its cost is higher than natural graphite. Present study is about fabrication of EDLCs using composite electrodes with activated charcoal and Sri Lankan natural graphite as well as a gel polymer electrolyte which is identified as a suitable substitute for liquid electrolytes. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Cyclic Voltammetry and Galvanostatic Charge Discharge test were done to evaluate the performance of the fabricated EDLCs. Amount of activated charcoal and natural graphite plays a noticeable role on the capacity. 50 graphite : 40 AC : 10 PVdF showed the optimum single electrode specific capacity value of 15 F/g. Capacity is determined by the cycling rate as well as the potential window within which cycling is being done. Continuous cycling resulted an average single electrode specific capacity variation of 48 F/g - 16 F/g. Capacity fading was higher at the beginning. Later, it dropped noticeably. Initial discharge capacity drop under Galvanostatic Charge Discharge test was slightly fast but reached near stable upon continuous charge discharge process. It can be concluded that initially some agitation is required to reach the maturity. However, the results can be considered as encouraging to initiate studies on EDLCs using Sri Lankan natural graphite.

  • To develop high performance nickel-iron secondary battery, the characteristics of charge-discharge reaction of iron electrode were examined by cyclic voltammetry technique, SEM and XRD analysis. The capacity of the test electrodes was determined by the constant current charge-discharge method. It was found that the temperature and concentration of electrolyte were the major determinant factors of electrode capacity, and especially the 1st discharge capacity was increased with the increase of temperature. The effect of fore forming agent on the electrode capacity was negligible. The electrode capacity was above 350 ㎃h/g(36% utility) at 0.25C discharge rate. The stability of electrode was very good, but the activation occurred slowly.

  • Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in many applications due to their high energy density, high efficiency, and excellent cycle ability. Once an unknown Li-ion battery is reusable, it is important to measure its lifetime and state of health. The most favorable measurement method is the cycle test, which is accurate but time- and capacity-consuming. In this study, instead of a cycle test, we present an empirical model based on the C-rate test to understand the state of health of the battery in a short time. As a result, we show that the partially accelerated charge/discharge condition of the Li-ion battery is highly effective for the degradation of battery capacity, even when half of the charge/discharge conditions are the same. This observation provides a measurable method for predicting battery reuse and future capacity degradation.

  • Different amounts of excess lithium in the range of x = 0~0.3 were added to $Li_{1+x}[Mn_{0.720}Ni_{0.175}Co_{0.105}]O_2$ cathode materials synthesized using the co-precipitation method to investigate its microstructure and electrochemical properties. Pure layered structure without impurities was confirmed in the XRD pattern analysis and increasing peak intensity of $Li_2MnO_3$ was observed along with the addition of over 0.2 mol Li. The initial discharge capacity of the stoichiometric composition was determined to be 246 mAh/g, while the discharge capacity of the addition of 0.1 mol Li was obtained to be 241 mAh/g, which was not significantly different from that of the stoichiometric composition. However, the discharge capacities decreased dramatically after the addition of 0.2 and 0.3 mol Li to 162 mAh/g and 146 mAh/g, respectively. In the rate capability test, the active $Li_{1+x}[Mn_{0.720}Ni_{0.175}Co_{0.105}]O_2$ cathode material of the stoichiometric composition showed a dramatic decrease in its discharge capacity with increasing C-rate, as evidenced by the result that the discharge capacity at 5C was 13% compared with 0.1C. On the other hand, the discharge capacity of compositions containing excess lithium was improved at higher current rates. The cycling test showed that the composition containing an excess of 0.1 mol Li had the most outstanding capacity retention.
