Non-thermal plasma processing using a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) has been investigated as an alternative method for the degradation of non-biodegradable organic compounds in wastewater. The active species such as OH radical, produced by the electrical discharge may play an important role in degrading organic compound in water. The degradation of N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO) was investigated as an indicator of the generation of OH radical. The DBD plasma reactor of this study consisted of a plasma reactor, recycling pump, power supply and reservoir. The effect of diameter of external reactor (15 ~ 40 mm), width of ground electrode (2.5 ~ 30 cm), shape (pipe, spring) and material (copper, stainless steel and titanium) of ground electrode, water circulation rate (3.1 ~ 54.8 cm/s), air flow rate (0.5 ~ 3.0 L/min) and ratio of packing material (0 ~ 100 %) were evaluated. The experimental results showed that shape and materials of ground were not influenced the RNO degradation. Optimum diameter of external reactor, water circulation rate and air flow rate for RNO degradation were 30 mm, 25.4 cm/s and 4 L/min, respectively. Ground electrode length to get the maximum RNO degradation was 30 cm, which was same as reactor length. Filling up of glass beads decreased the RNO degradation. Among the experimented parameters, air flow rate was most important parameters which are influenced the decomposition of RNO.
The purpose of this study was to understand distribution characteristics of organic matters through concentration of $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$ and TOC in 31 streams in Han River region, and to establish the relationship among organic matter concentration, and discharge load and flow rate. Concentration of $BOD_5$ and TOC in 22 streams were above IV grade except 9, and the average 80.9 % of total organic matter (by TOC) accounted for dissolved organic type. Correlation among organic matter parameters were higher ($r^2$ > 0.78) and the relationship between TOC and $COD_{Mn}$ concentration was higher than $BOD_5$. Ratio of biodegradable organic matter/total organic matter in the 31 streams was estimated at 41.4 % with $BOD_5$ oxidation rate, and 78.0 % with $BOD_5/COD_{Mn}$ concentration ratio. Ratio of $NBOD/BOD_5$ concentration in four sites with $BOD_5/COD_{Mn}$ concentration ratio exceeding 1 ranged from 54.5 % ~ 79.3 %. Among 979 flow rate data measured at 31 streams, 87 % of measured data was below 0.1 cms and increased water pollution under low flow conditions. Correlation between $BOD_5$ concentration and $BOD_5$ discharge load in the watershed was low, and it was revealed that several streams have more $BOD_5$ delivery load than $BOD_5$ discharge load. Results suggest that many biodegradable forms of organic matter are being introduced into the stream from pollutant sources in the watershed.
Experimental investigations on the effect of two kinds of additives ; aqueous NaOH solution and ammonia(NH$_3$) for removal of NOx and SO$_2$ simultaneously by corona discharge were carried out. The simulated combustion flue gas was[NO(0.02[%])-SO$_2$(0.08[%])-$CO_2$-Air-$N_2$] Volume percentage of aqueous NaOH solution used was 20[%] and $N_2$flow rate was 2.5[$\ell$/min] for bubbling aqueous NaOH solution Ammonia gas(14.81[%]) balanced by argon was diluted by air. NH$_3$ molecular ratios(MR) based on [NH$_3$] and [NO+SO$_2$] were 1, 1.5 and 2.5 The vapour of aqueous NaOH solution and NH$_3$was introduced to the main simulated combustion flue gas duct through injection systems which were located at downstream of corona discharge reactor. NOx(NO+NO$_2$) removal rate by injecting the vapour of aqueous NaOH solution was much better than that by injecting NH$_3$however SO$_2$removal rate by injecting NH$_3$was much better than that by injecting the vapour of aqueous NaOH SO$_2$removal rate slightly increased with increasing applied voltage. When the vapour of aqueous NaOH solution and NH$_3$were simultaneously injection NOx and SO$_2$ removal rate were significantly increased.
Binder harvesters introduced to Korea were originally designed to be used for Japonica varieties which are highly resistant to shattering. In order to improve the performance of the binder to Indica varieties which are easily shattered and have shorter stem, mechanical modifications of the binder are inevitable. Shattering losses of the binder can be classified into two major parts; one incurred before and one after binding operations. The latter has been evaluated as great as the former. Previous studies indicated that the high discharge losses resulted from a great impact force of the discharge arm on the rice bundle during the discharge process. This study was intended to theoretically analyze the discharge mechanism of four-bar linkage. For this purpose, two commercially available binder harvesters having a four-bar linkage as a discharge mechanism were analyzed. Using the results from the motion analysis and the other structural constraints of the machines, they were modified and experimentally compared with the machines without modification to see whether any decrease in grain losses was obtained. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows: 1. The path, velocity and acceleration of discharge arm were computer analyzed by vector analysis. Using results of the analysis and intrinsic constraints of the binder, discharge mechanism was modified to reduce the impact force on bundle by discharge arm in the range where the discharge performance was not deteriorated. This modification of the discharge mechanism could be done with an aid of four-bar linkage synthesis technique. As a result, average velocity and acceleration of the discharge arm during the discharge process were reduced respectively by 19 percent and 33 percent for binder A, and 17 percent and 35 percent for binder B. 2. Through the modification of the discharge mechanism, discharge losses of binder A were reduced by 42-56 percent for Milyang 23, Poongsan and Hangang chal, and discharge losses of binder B were reduced by 13-20 percent for Milyang 23 and Poongsan. 3. Discharge losses were decreased as the bundle size became larger and the size effect on the decrease rate appeared more significant in the binders with modifications than in those without modifications.
The use of plasma has increased in bio-application field in recent years. Particularly, water treated by arc discharge or atmospheric pressure plasma has been actively utilized in bio-industry. In this study, we have developed a plasma activated water generating system. For this system, two kinds of plasma sources; dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma and arc discharge plasma have been used. The discharge energy was calculated using the breakdown voltage and current, and the emission spectrum was measured to investigate the generated reactive species. We also analyzed the amount of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in water using the chemical methods and nitric oxide sensor. Finally, the influence of plasma generated reactive species on the germination and growth of spinach (Spinacia oleracea) was investigated. Spinach is a green leafy vegetable that contains a large amount of various physiologically active organic compounds. However, it is characterized with a low seed germination rate.
The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of H$_2$ pressure on partial discharge (PD) activity and aging rate in turbine generator winding insulations. A series of field tests and laboratory tests were peformed to investigate the effect of $H_2$ pressure on PD activity. Field tests were conducted at two unit turbine generators in two conditions, in $H_2$ pressure and in air atmosphere. Obtained results are as follows ; 1) ${\Delta}tan{\delta}$ and maximum partial discharge are reduced with increase of $H_2$ pressure and partial discharge inception voltage. 2) The reduction ratio of ${\Delta}tan{\delta}$ due to $H_2$ pressure is higher than one of PD magnitude. 3) Partial discharge pulses suffer from attenuation and distortion when transmitted along windings, because of the complex L-C network between windings. From the result, partial discharge pulses are subjected to resonance phenomena in a generator winding.
Plasma process has great possibilities to remove SOx, NOx simultaneously with high treatment efficiency and is expected to be suitable for small or middle plants. It was accomplished to evaluate SO2, NOx control possibility and achieve basic data to control pollutants by use of Surface Discharge Induced Plasma Chemical Process (SPCP) in this study. O3 generation characteristics by discharge of a plate was proportional to O2 concentration and power consumption and inversely proportional to temperature and humidity, In case of dry air, NOx was highly generated by N2 and O2 in air during the plasma discharge process but it was decreased considerably as H2O was added. SO2 removal efficiency was very high, and removal rate was 170,350 mEA at 30,50 watt respectively in flue gas which is usually contain HIO. NOx removal efficiency was about 57% at 40 watt power consumption with 7.5% humidity. It is estimated that H2O has an important role in reaction mechanism with pollutants according to plasma discharge.
As the temperature of the panel increases in AC-PDPs, the minimum driving voltage increases. Also, as the more the number of discharge increases in cells, the probability of the strong dark discharge in the reset period increases. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the lag time of the discharge and the mechanism of mis-discharges which are the black noise and bright noise. We conclude that the variation of time lag characterizes the properties of exo-electron emission from MgO. Thus, we found that the main factor of the mis-discharges is the rate of change of the electron emission ability from the MgO surface.
EGW process has been applied to joining of ship block with vertical-up position at high production rate. The workability of EGW, however, has been interrupted by too much slag production. Two electrodes EGW showed more severe workability than that of one electrode EGW. Therefore, to understand the effect of discharge amount of EGW slag on workability and mechanical properties, two different slag discharge amount have been controlled at the same welding conditions. The results are as follows; 1) Workability has been improved by any additional slag discharge. 2) Mechanical properties have been deteriorated with any additional slag discharge. 3) Chemical compositions of weld metal have been changed by any additional slag discharge.
This paper investigated the aging characteristic under long-term corona discharge on roan temperature vulcanized silicone rubber, which has been using as a protective coating material for solving the contaminant problem. The applied electrical field is 10kV/cm ac and corona discharge treatment was applied on RTV silicone rubber sheet for maximum 250 hours. With the duration of corona discharge. the diffusible low molecular weight species increased, which was determined the usage of n-hexane extraction method. In addition, the contaminant layer was formed on the treated surface, and then measured the contact angle. We investigated the relation of contact angle and diffusible low molecular weight species. It is found that scissor of main chain PDMS and side chains $(CH_3)$ and the generation of LMW species were occurred by a corona discharge. The improvement of hydrophobicity rate is thought due to the increase of diffusible LMW species.
