Thermal conductivities using the thermal probe method were determined for frost susceptible soil with three types of discarded tire powder under the condition of a temperature variation from $-20^{\circ}C{\sim}+10^{\circ}C$. Also, the amount of unfrozen water contents was measured by the pulsed NMR method. The variation of unfrozen water content in the experimental condition could be expressed as a function of temperature given by an exponential equation. A new model for calculating the thermal conductivity of frozen soil was proposed. It is extended from the two element method and subdivided into three constituent elements.

This research is to set a direction on the recycle of Discarded Automotive tires reforming them into heavy metal adsorbents by developing a particular functional group inducing formation of Chelate complexes with heavy metal ion in the water, on the surface of the used tire conventionally turned into powdered form. For this purpose, through FT-IR, XRD, XRF, SEM, elution test we confirmed and analyzed the property of newly reformed scrapped tires, and functional group. Also, by Kinetics Study we produced an invariable value applying to absorption models. Conclusively the absorption preference of heavy metal is determined to be $Pb^{2+}>Cu^{2+}>Cd^{2+}$, and it reached absorption balance within first 30 minutes, also the absorption reaction time increased from 0.27 to $1.78\sim3.15(g/mg{\cdot}min)$, and showed more than 80% of removal efficiency. This result proved that the efficiency increased by 10 times compared with the conventional powdered Discarded Automotive tires, and the Discarded Automotive tire which implemented the Functional group can exhibit a great efficiency as heavy metal adsorbent.

To determine the frost heave suppressing mechanism of soil mixed with tire powder, we conducted three kinds of laboratory experiments: measurement of unfrozen water, evaluation of thermal conductivity, and a frost heave. In this research, we focused on changes in the coefficient of permeability of the mixed soil, and first found that of the unsaturated soil. Next, in the case of the presence of ice, we took the ice-impeding factor into consideration to derive the coefficient of permeability of the frozen fringe from the area ratio of the soil and tire powder in mixed soil. The results show a positive correlation between the water intake rate and the coefficient of permeability. Moreover, we found that the frost heave decreased thanks to a reduction in the permeability and a fall in the unfrozen water content of the soil mixed with tire powder. We also calculated the weight of the water content of the soil and tire powder void quantitatively using the result of the volumetric ratio of mixed soil.
Millions of scrap tires are discarded annually in Turkey. The bulk of which are currently landfilled or stockpiled. These tires consume valuable landfill space or if improperly disposed, create a fire hazard and provide a prolific breeding ground for rats and mosquitoes. Used tires pose both a serious public and environmental health problem which means that economically feasible alternatives for scrap tire disposal must be found. Some of the current uses of scrap tires are tire-derived fuel, creating barrier reefs and as an asphalt additive in the form of crumb rubber. However, there is a much need for the development of additional uses for scrap tires. One development the creation of shreds from scrap tires that are coarse grained, free draining and have a low compacted density thus offering significant advantages for use as lightweight subgrade fill and backfill material. This paper reports a comprehensive laboratory study that was performed to evaluate the use of a shredded tire-sand mixture as a backfill material in trench conditions. A steel frame test tank with glass walls was created to replicate a classical trench section in field conditions. The results of the test demonstrated that shredded tires mixed with sand have a definite potential to be effectively used as backfill material for buried pipe installations.
Waste tires can be used not only for reinforcement material due to its high capacity against tensile force but also effective for massive treatment. In order to use waste tire as reinforcing material Tread mat using tire treads only was made. Plate load tests on the embankment of decomposed granite soil reinforced with Tread mat and geogrids were conducted for comparison with the test results, respectively. And numerical analyses were performed to see the stress and stain around the reinforced material. Tread mat showed bearing capacity increase and the amount was bigger than that of commercial geogrids. Finite element analysis showed decrease of stress beneath the reinforced material and stress distribution. Finally Tread mat was proposed to use for soil reinforcement as a means of massive treatment of discarded tire.
Achieving a pervious concrete (PC) with appropriate physical and mechanical properties used in pavement have been strongly investigated through the use of different materials specifically from the global waste materials of the populated areas. Discarded tires and the rubber tire particles have been currently manufactured as the recycled waste materials. In the current study, the combination of polymer, silica fume and rubber aggregates from rubber tire particles have been used to obtain an optimized PC resulting that the PC with silica fume, polymer and rubber aggregate replacement to mineral aggregate has greater compressive and flexural strength. The related flexural and compressive strength of the produced PC has been increased 31% and 18% compared to the mineral PC concrete, also, the impact resistance has been progressed 8% compared to the mineral aggregate PC and the permeability with Open Graded Fraction Course standard (OGFC). While the manufactured PC has significantly reduced the elasticity modulus of usual pervious concrete, the impact resistance has been remarkably improved.
Every year, millions of waste tires are discarded across the world. Storage of waste tires presents many problems such as fire threats, epidemics, and non-economic factors. Furthermore, the disintegration process of waste tires is not economical or practical due to its time-consuming, and disposal requirements. In this study, half-section waste tires (HSWTs) were integrated with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes under different relative density conditions. The main aim of the study was to reduce the deformation values of embedded HDPE pipes in sandy soil and to evaluate the soil-pipe interaction. In comprehensive laboratory tests, half-section waste tires were integrated in two different ways: in the middle of the pipeline and along the pipeline. Accordingly, it was concluded that the effectiveness of waste tires reduces the deformation and bending moment values in the critical regions of pipes. As a result of reinforcement in the mid-point of the pipe defined as the most critical region, 52% and 36% less deformation was observed in the crown and springlines of the pipe, respectively. In addition, the bending moment values for the same critical section were determined to be 40% less in the crown and 28% less in the springline regions of the pipe.
