The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting mental health status according to gender of persons with physical disabilities and to try their healthy life. Using the 6th Korean Retirement and Income Study, 333 persons with physical disabilities were included in the study. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and regression analysis were conducted to examine the general characteristics, instrumental activities of daily living, material support, and the effects on mental health status. There was no statistically significant difference in mental health status by gender, but there was a difference in Instrumental Activities of Daily Living and life satisfaction. In the case of males, instrumental daily activities performance, material support, depression, and life satisfaction were found to be influential. In the case of females, spouse, depression, and life satisfaction were factors affecting mental health status. Based on the results of this study, we will be able to understand persons with physical disabilities and use them as a basis for developing mental health promotion programs.

The aim of this study was to examine empirically the causal relationship between significant adverse outcomes of elderly frailty. The 2017 National Survey on Old Adults was used to test this, but only nine variables necessary for the hypothesis test were abstracted from it. The results of the hypothesis test are summarized as follows. The sub-variables of adverse outcomes, such as disabilities in daily living activities, disabilities in instrumental daily living activities, and health care utilization, were analyzed empirically by inputting sub-variables of six frailty factors into hierarchical regression analysis. In the final model, the physical activities, emotional control, and social support were verified as significant variables influencing the disabilities in daily living activities. These included the following: physical activities, sensory functions, cognition, emotional control and social support as those influencing disabilities in the instrumental daily living activities; and nutrition, physical activities, sensory functions, emotional control, and social support as those influencing the health care utilization. Based on the results of the hypothesis test, it is necessary to develop and implement personalized health management programs that specifically identify elderly weakness factors that affect adverse outcomes, such as disabilities or health care utilization.
Objective : This study aimed to examine the association Self-Rated Health(hereafter SRH) and Activities of Daily Living(hereafter ADL), Independent Activities of Daily Living(hereafter IADL) among Korean elderly. Methods : Using nationally representative cross sectional studies called 2014 Survey of living conditions and welfare needs of Korean elder persons. We used SRH as an independent variable, disabilities of ADL and IADL as dependent variables. Logistic regression was implemented and potential confounders such as socio-economic status, demographic characteristics and others were adjusted. Results : It was revealed that people who were female(than male) and 75 or more years old(than less than 75 years old) were shown to have poor SRH and disabilities of both ADL and IADL. In logistic regression model, poor SRH was associated with ADL and IADL disabilities. Especially, their association was more remarkable among male than among female. It can be understood that socio-economic contexts affect quality of life among elderly and SRH can be differently perceived by gender. Conclusions : Our notable findings showed that gender perspective is needed to understand SRH and daily living among elderly.

Purpose : The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in sociodemographic characteristics, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and healthcare needs among disabled persons with and without language disorder. Methods : Using raw data from the National Survey of the Disabled Person (2017), this study compared 6,320 disabled persons without language disorder and 229 disabled person with language disorder among 6,549 persons with disabilities. The dependent variables included sociodemographic characteristics, IADL, and healthcare needs. Results : People with language disorder were younger (p<.001), illiterate (p<.001), and had higher family income (p=.003) than people without language disorder. In addition, people with language disorder had a higher disability grade than people without language disorder (p<.001), and the percentages of brain injury, hearing impairment, and intellectual disability were higher among type of disability (p<.001). People with language disorder showed significantly higher dependence on all items of IADL than people without language disorder (p<.001). As the first-ranked healthcare need, people without language disorder had the highest percentage of "chronic illness management," and people with language disorder had the highest percentage of "disability management" (p<.001). Conclusion : The findings of the current investigation suggest that health care services are needed to improve IADL in people with language disorder and that the development of a disability management program for people with language disorder is required.
This study purports to examine sociodemographic characteristics and those factors associated with osteoarthritis in women experiencing the disease in order to make suggestions for the prevention and management of osteoarthritis in women. The subjects were 143 women who were diagnosed to have osteoarthritis and under follow-up care at an outpatient department of a university-affiliated hospital. The data were collected through personal interviews by using the structured questionnaire between October 6 and October 24, 1997. The degree of daily living activities was measured with 24 items, which were made based upon Katz Index, Barthel Index and Functional Status Index. Each item has 4 response categories : (1) being able to do alone with any difficulty, (2) being able to do alone with some difficulty, (3) being able to do alone with the help of a person or an instrument, (4) not being able to do at all. The data was analyzed with correlation analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and regression analysis. The results are summarized as follows : 1. As for the age of the subjects, 59.4% were between 45 and 64 years, while 28% were 65 years and above. The subjects having religion were 71.7% and 44.1% of the subjects were protestants. The educational level was low : 31.5% graduated from elementary school, while 30.1% had no formal education. Those married subjects were 72%. Fifty nine percent of the subjects evaluated their economic status as middle class. 2. Those people from whom the subjects currently receive some help were spouses in 35.8% of the subjects. Likewise, 50% of the subjects indicated spouse as the people from whom they want to receive help. 3. The score of the ability of daily living activities ranged between 48 and 96, with the mean of 78.94. Those means of physical activity, ADL(activities of daily living) and IADL(instrumental activities of daily living) were 14.89, 13.97 and 50.09, respectively. Except for the items of carrying heavy stuff and of washing clothes in the sitting position the subjects showed independence in more than 90% of the items, where Independence is defined as being able to do alone or with the help of a person or an instrument. 4. The increase in age was a significant predictor of the decrease in the ability of daily living activities. Those graduated from middle school and above showed a significantly higher degree in the ability of daily living activities than those with less educational level. The married women revealed significantly higher scores in physical activity, ADL, and IADL than the unmarried ones. The ability of daily living activities was not significantly related to having religion, economic status and living with family. 5. The average duration of experiencing osteoarthritis was 4 years and 7 months. Regarding the site of the onset, 65% of the subjects indicated knees. The women with osteoarthritis for less than 3 years were 65%. The ability of daily living activities was significantly different by the duration of illness : the longer the duration of illness, the less the ability of activities. The above findings suggest the need for developing those programs for prevention disabilities in performing daily living activities and for managing diseases targeting the women of middle and old age, with low educational level, and with unmarried status. In addition, there should be developed an instrument for measuring the ability of daily living activities which reflects daily lives of Korean women with osteoarthritis in order to examine comprehensive effects of osteoarthritis on women's daily lives in this country.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) of residential home dwelling elderly and home for the aged dwelling elderly. In attempt to address medical professional caring the elderly, this comparative study examines the factors associated with dependence in the ADL and IADL in two samples of elderly people living in two different environments. Methods: The instrument of ADL and IADL widely used Katz ADL and IADL. Katz ADL and IADL was not a perfect fit for Korean. In concern with cultural factors Won developed K(Korean)-ADL and K-IADL scale reflecting Korean's own language expression and cultural factors in year of 2002. The assessment tool of this study was K-ADL and K-IADL. Differences of ADL and IADL were tested for statistical significance using group t-test and x2 test for comparisons between the residential home dwelling elderly and the home for the aged dwelling elderly. Results: Comparison of assessment for K-ADL and K-IADL in two different dwelling types was significant. Performance of ADL and IADL depend upon their living environment such as social status, number of children, income, present illness as well as age group. This study also showed significant differences of performance in some activities of ADL and IADL between the elderly who live in their own home and live in home for the aged. Comparison of performance of ADL and IADL in different dwelling types revealed that only one item of ADL was significant but only one item of IADL was not significant. It means that IADL is more difficult activities in the home for the aged dwelling elderly than the residential home dwelling elderly. The coupled elderly has more independent in some ADL and IADL activities compared with the single elderly. Conclusion: Using K-ADL and K-IADL is more convenient for Korean elderly. Medical professional consider some factors like dwelling style, social status, existing diseases and disabilities in order to care the elderly and train him/her activities of daily living as well as instrumental activities of daily living. Medical professional, especially physical and occupational therapist emphasize the training items which are bathing of ADL and grooming, housework, preparing meals, laundry, traveling, public transportation, shopping, using telephone and taking medicine of IADL based on the result of this study.
This study was conducted to present the basic data for the revitalization of lifelong education for people with developmental disabilities by exploring variables affecting their willingness to participate in lifelong education. Among the original data on the disability survey in 2017, data on developmentally disabled people were used, and 16 variables that could affect the intention to participate in lifelong education of the developmentally disabled as independent variables were used as dependent variables. Each set was performed for logistic regression. As a result of this study, the gender, age, disability level, family support, life satisfaction, and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living of the people with developmental disabilities were found to be variables that significantly influence the intention to participate in lifelong education for the people with developmental disabilities. In order to revitalize lifelong education for people with developmental disabilities, it will be necessary to provide a way to improve the willingness of people with developmental disabilities to participate in lifelong education as well as to build infrastructure such as expanding institutions and related personnel and programs.
Objectives: This study was conducted to examine the association between health condition and leaving the labor market among middle-aged and older adults in South Korea. Methods: Data was obtained from individuals aged 45 years and older participating in the 2006 and 2008 Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. We used various health measures including chronic diseases, comorbidities, traffic accident injuries, disabilit of instrumental activities of daily living, depressive symptoms, and self-rated health. The odds ratios of job loss, and retirement, versus employment were calculated using multinomial logistic regression by each health measure. Results: In our cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis, health problems related to physical disabilities had the greatest effect on leaving the worksite. A shift in health condition from good to poor in a short period was a predictor of increased risk of unemployment but a persistent pattern of health problems was not associated with unemployment. Women with health problems showed a high probability of retirement, whereas among men, health problems instantly the possibility of both job loss and retirement. Conclusions: Health problems of middle aged and older workers were crucial risk factors for retirement and involuntarily job loss. Especially functional defect and recent health problems strongly and instanty affected employment status.
This study tries to understand how the physical impairment develops to practical disabilities among adults with cerebral palsy through path analysis, based on the concept of disability by WHO that the physical impairment and "activities of daily living"(ADL) are affected by the combination of interrelated concept of personal health and environment. Pain and instrumental support are conceptualized as mediating variables for ADL among the adults with cerebral palsy, which are used in the analysis. As a result of surveying of 381 participants, paralyzed region is the only variable directly influencing ADL; other variables such as gender, age, and types of cerebral palsy do not have direct effect on ADL. However, it turns out that age, types of cerebral palsy, and paralyzed region influence on pain problems and also on ADL indirectly, when pain is introduced as a mediating variable. The study also shows that the extent of instrumental support works directly and indirectly toward pain and ADL. It means that individual impairment does not necessarily have influence on the limitations of ADL, but on the result of interrelatedness of individual factors and social factors. Finally, this study implies that the social work practice should be intervened with a new approach of the consideration of the effects of mediating variables.
