In this paper, we proposed the compensation structures for the enhanced directivity of CPW(Coplanar waveguide) directional couplers with finite-extent backed conductor. The proposed compensation structures are. realized by expanding the slot width between signal line and ground plane in center region of couplers. The CPW couplers with expanded slot have the same phase velocity for even and odd mode because of added inductance and changed capacitance appropriately, so the enhanced directivity is accomplished. The designed CPW directional couplers have good directivity and matching characteristic at center frequency in simulation and measurement.

In this paper, we demonstrate that the directivity of the CPW(Coplanar Waveguide) directional coupler with finite-extent backed conductor is enhanced by eliminating center region of backed conductor appropriately. If the backed conductor is removed at center region of couplers, the couplers have two backed conductors. If effective odd mode dielectric constant is decreased at center region, the electrical length for odd mode is changed and phase velocity is same at the directional couplers. Hence, directivity is improved. The eliminated length is solved by an odd and even mode analysis. The designed moderate CPW directional coupler with the proposed compensation structure has excellent directivity and matching characteristic at center frequency in simulation and measurement.

In this paper, single, two, and three-section microstrip directional couplers are implemented for realizing the high directivity characteristics. The achievement of the high directivity with microstrip configuration is carried out by the distributed capacitor to decrease the even and odd mode phase difference. Capacitive compensation is performed by gap coupling of open stub formed in sub-coupled line. Therefore, insertion loss and power handling capability are not affected by the gap coupling. The proposed structure is easy to fabricate and incorporate another microwave device due to the planner microstrip. We designed and fabricated single, two, and three-section directional coupler with 20 ㏈ coupling. In spite of microstrip structure, the capacitive compensation structure shows 30 ㏈, 27 ㏈, and 25 ㏈ of directivity in single, two, and three-section directional couplers, respectively.

Microstrip directional couplers using microstrip lines do not have good directivity characteristics because the dielectric constant of the substrate is different from that of air. To solve this problem, a compensation capacitor is sometimes attached between the coupling lines to improve directivity. This paper proposes a directional coupler with high directivity using interdigital capacitors implemented with transmission lines instead of lumped capacitors. The directional coupler designed and fabricated using the proposed method showed a coupling factor of 20 dB and a directivity of higher than 30 dB at 2.14 GHz. This directional coupler can be used as two directional couplers because it has two coupling ports and two isolated ports.

The directivity of crossed waveguide directional coupler is generally decreased according as coupling coefficient of it increase. In this paper, the geomertical parameters of crossed slot pair for directivity improvement is modified and the formulas for design of it are proposed. The crossed waveguide directional coupler designed upon the formulas is fabricated with the WR42 waveguide in K-band. The measured results show that the coupling coefficient is 21.5 dB and directivity is minimum 23.9 dB over the operating frequency from 18GHz to 26.5GHz.
The most satisfactory split-beam transducer for fish sizing maintains a wide bearing angle region for correct fish tracking without interference from side lobes and lower sensitivity to fish echoes outside of the main lobe region to correctly measure the angular location of free-swimming fishes in the sound beam. To evaluate the performance of an experimentally developed 50 kHz split-beam transducer, the angular location of a target was derived from the electrical phase difference between the resultant signals for the pair of transducer quadrants in the horizontal and vertical planes consisting of 32 transducer elements. The electrical phase difference was calculated by cross-spectral density analysis for the signals from the pair of receiving transducer quadrants, and the directivity correction factor for a developed split-beam transducer was estimated as the fourth-order polynomial of the off-axis beam angle for the angular location of the target. The experimental results demonstrate that the distance between the acoustic centers for the pair of receiving transducer quadrants can be controlled to less than one wavelength by optimization with amplitude-weighting transformers, and a smaller center spacing provides a range of greater angular location for tracking of a fish target. In particular, a side lobe level of -25.2 dB and an intercenter spacing of $0.96\lambda$($\lambda$= wavelength) obtained in this study suggest that the angular location of fish targets distributing within a range of approximately ${\pm}28^{\circ}$ without interference from side lobes can be measured.

In this paper, compensation structures are proposed in the CPW directional couplers with finite-extent backed conductor for tight coupling. The proposed structures are realized T-shaped expanded slots and modified finite-extent backed conductor in CPW coupled structure. The T-shaped expanded slots was used to avoide reduced coupling and modified finite extent backed conductor of dumbbell shape was used to enhance directivity and matching. The designed CPW directional couplers at 1 GHz has good directivity without reducing coupling in simulation by EM solver based on full-wave analysis and measurements.
This paper proposes a new wide-band beamforming algorithm which has Gaussian weighting at nested linear array for acoustic measurement. The beamforming is performed one-shot by using all sensors simultaneously, not octave-by-octave. Gaussian weighting of frequency-dependent function is applied to each sensor before time-delay compensation so as to control the frequency receiving band of each sensor. As the results of the simulations, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithm can form the one-shot beams having uniform directivity index and also it can be applied to the broad-band acoustic measurement.

Underwater acoustic noise measurement is an essential element for vulnerability assessment of modern naval platforms. But during the last few decades environmental conditions have drastically changed due to the gradually increasing sea ambient noise level and decreasing submarine radiated noise level. A real-time underwater acoustic measurement system with vertical line array is designed for the quiet submarine radiated noise assessment in challenging environment. This system has a constant directivity index in measurement frequency range and accurate tracking capability for the transmission loss compensation and navigation aids inside the submarine. This system has been validated at sea and used several times for the submarine noise measurement.
This paper proposes a new wide-band beamforming which has guassian weighting. For the prupose of measurement this beam is formed by using all sensors toghether, not octave-by-octave. Weighting is applied to each sensor before time-delay compensation as a frequency-dependent function. As the resutls of the simulation of the proosed algorithm for nested linear array having 17 sensors for each octave, it is confirmed that beam can be formed with all sensors together and uniform directivity index can be achieved by proposed algorithm.
