High Directivity Microstrip Directional Coupler using Interdigital Capacitors (인터디지털 커패시터를 이용한 높은 지향성을 갖는 마이크로스트립 방향성 결합기)

  • Microstrip directional couplers using microstrip lines do not have good directivity characteristics because the dielectric constant of the substrate is different from that of air. To solve this problem, a compensation capacitor is sometimes attached between the coupling lines to improve directivity. This paper proposes a directional coupler with high directivity using interdigital capacitors implemented with transmission lines instead of lumped capacitors. The directional coupler designed and fabricated using the proposed method showed a coupling factor of 20 dB and a directivity of higher than 30 dB at 2.14 GHz. This directional coupler can be used as two directional couplers because it has two coupling ports and two isolated ports.

  • Due to the low loss, broadband and accurate short time delay properties of optical fiber, it has attracted as a delay medium for high speed and broad-band signal processing. In this paper, we consider the coherent optical fiber filter of lattice structure, which uses coherent light sources and consists of directional couplers and optical fiber delay elements.The differences between the optical fiber filter and the ordinary digital filter are 1) the coupling coefficients of directional couplers are restricted between 0 and 1. 2) the optical signal is divided into ${j\sqrt{a}}and\;{j\sqrt{1-a}}$ at the directional coupler. Considering these restrictions, the design formulae and condition of realibility for optical fiber filter of lattice structure which makes the optimal use of optical signal energy are derived.

  • In this paper, new directional couplers for T/R switch of UHF RFID applications are proposed to overcome TX-to-RX leakage problem. The proposed method can remove TX-to-RX leakage caused by both imperfect isolation characteristic of the conventional directional coupler and the mismatch of antenna impedance. Two directional couplers are implemented using distributed elements and lumped elements respectively for the verification. The varactor tuneable circuits for compensation of the antenna mismatch is also proposed. The measurement result shows excellent TX-to-RX leakage suppression, more than 45dB in 910MHz.

An Application of Artificial Dielectric Substrate for Design of Size-reduced Directional Couplers (방향성결합기의 소형화를 위한 가유전체 기판구조의 응용)

  • This paper describes the design of size-reduced directional coupler using the artificial dielectric substrate and its increased effective permittivity. Directional couplers are widely used in measuring RF power indirectly and coupling signal power. Artificial dielectric substrates have higher effective dielectric constant than standard dielectric substrate due to the lots of metalized via-holes, and the increased effective permittivity results in size-reduction of circuits. As a design example, 15dB directional couplers are designed on the standard substrate and artificial dielectric substrate and their size are compared. The size of the directional coupler using the artificial dielectric substrate is only 1/3 of that designed using the standard substrate, while the performances are preserved. In addition, the measured performances of the size-reduced coupler are well agreed with the simulated ones. The measured coupling coefficient, matching, and insertion loss at 2GHz are -14.62dB, -24.1dB, and -0.38dB, respectively.

  • We show that the extinction ratio is improved using slight asymmetry in two core refractive indices of polarization independent very short vertical directional couplers with the double-sided deep-ridge (DSDR) waveguide structure. The optimum asymmetry with the maximum extinction ratio and the tolerance of the refractive index of core with the extinction ratio larger 1ha]1 30 ㏈ increase as the thickness of inner cladding layer and the two cores decrease due to the increase of the coupling strength between the two cores. Also, the device length and the tolerance of the device length with the extinction ratio larger than 30 ㏈ decrease as the thickness of the inner cladding layer and the two cores decrease due to the increase of the coupling strength between the two cores. We show that polarization independent vertical directional couplers with the DSDR waveguide structure with the device length less than 100 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the extinction ratio larger than 30 ㏈ could be implemented.

Lumped Element MMIC Direction Coupler Based on Parallel Coupled-Line Theory (평행 결합선로 이론에 근거한 MMIC 집중 소자형 방향성 결합기)

  • In this paper, a lumped equivalent circuit for a conventional parallel directional coupler is proposed. The equivalent circuit and design formula for the presented lumped element coupler is derived based on the even- and odd-mode properties of a parallel-coupled line. By using the derived design formula, we have designed the 3dB and 4.7dB lumped element directional couplers at the center frequency of 3.4GHz and 5.6GHz. A chip type directional coupler has been designed to fabricate with MMIC(Monolitic Microwave integrated circuit) process. Excellent agreements between simulations and measurements on the designed directional couplers show the validity of this paper.

  • Directional couplers based on plasmonic waveguides with nano-scale three channels are designed by utilizing mode coupling effect as well as rib-guiding structure. Longitudinal modal transmission-line theory(L-MTLT) is used for simulating the light propagation and optimizing the design parameters. The designed plasmonic coupler operating as power splitter has nano-scale size of about 200~250 nm width. In order to achieve the desired power splitting ratio, the refractive index of guiding modes is evaluated along the width variation of center channel. Finally, a power splitter based on triple rib directional coupler, which ensures maximum power transfer from one outermost guide to the other outermost guide, is designed.

  • The coupling properties of supermodes guided by grating-assisted directional couplers (GADCs) can be phrased in rigorous modal theory. Such a modal solution for TE modes expressed by simple electrical transmission-line networks is utilized to analyze the power distribution of GADCS with three guiding channels. In particular, the modal transmission-line theory can serve as a template for computational algorithms that systematically evaluate the coupling efficiency that are not readily obtained by other methods.

  • In this paper A methode for design of hybrid-ring couplers having sections of lenth λ/n is proposed. Assuming only one - axis symmitry and isolation of output arms general expressions for the scattering parameters are obtained. The new design method using λ/n sections for 3 dB couplers is derived, . The calculated frequency reponse of the new design has been compared with that of conventional ones, . A new design using λ/5 section and having an overall length 13λ/10 is found to be superior to the 7λ/6 design is expected to have a low insertion loss by virtue of its shorter length.
