  • In Korea, there has been a traditional post and beam wood construction with large roof load. Because a large friction is generated in wooden joint or members, it is important to evaluate the friction between wood members according to wood direction. Because most of studies have been concerned with friction between wood and steel, excluding effect of real area of contact, there are a few studies on the friction between wood members. The object of this study was to evaluate friction or coefficient of friction according to normal force and real area of contact of wood. With Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi) test specimens, five steps of normal force and combinations of test were prepared. Results indicated that normal force had almost no affection on the friction, however there was difference about friction or coefficient of friction according to real contact conditions of wood grain and contact area.

  • This paper proposes a control strategy of position and force control in the same direction based on hybrid position/force control. In order to control position and force in the same direction, a weighting matrix is introduced instead of a selection matrix suggested by Raibert and Craig. The major part of the controller output comes from the position controller when a position control error is large, from the force controller when a position control error is large. The proposed algorithm is implemented by the simulation and experiment focusing on the peg-in-hole task where friction exist significantly and is not constant. It also adopts and event control scheme for more efficient performance.

  • A suspended hemispherical silicon asperity moving over a silicon plate was simulated. The simulation results on friction and wear in the interface between the two can help obtain more durable miscroscale structures. Silicon structures were constructed with Tersoff three-body potential. Dependence of friction and wear of the asperity on both the atomic arrangement in the plate and the moving direction was investigated under the condition that the asperity is subject to the attractive normal force due to the plate. The results show that the variation of friction force with the movement of asperity, and the occurrence of adhesive wear are attributed to the formation and rupture of asperity, junction between the asperity and the plate. The friction force and wear are smaller when the asperity is incommensurate with the plate, and they also depend on the moving direction of the asperity over the plate.

  • In this study, we develop an automatic sorting system, which is mostly affected by frictional forces between a veneer and friction-generating device. So we will make a suitable dynamic model and mechanism to control friction force using a AC servo-motor. We suggest Stick friction and Column friction model, which is occurred between roller and veneer and within veneers as well. A kind of sensor can get the velocity of roller and movement of roller vertical direction. We assume that the several things to simplify the complicate and difficult nonlinear friction phenomenon. And to create an optimal normal force, which can generate a suitable friction force, we control the movement of sorting roller and supporter as well. We introduce several results about a friction character and suggest the value of calibration of sorting roller movement and supporters as well.

  • Surface texturing of tribological applications is an attractive technology of engineered surface. Therefore, reduction of friction is considered to be necessary for improved efficiency of machines. The current study investigated the potential of textured micro-scale grooves on bearing steel flat mated with pin-on-disk. We discuss reducing friction due to the influence of sliding direction at surface pattern. We can indicate lubrication mechanism as a Stribeck curve, which has a relationship between the friction coefficient and a dimensionless parameter for the lubrication condition. It was found that the friction coefficient was changed by the surface pattern and sliding direction, even when surface pattern was the same. It was thus verified that micro-scale grooves could affect the friction reduction considerably under mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication conditions. The lubrication regime influences the friction coefficient induced by the sliding direction of groove pattern. The friction coefficient depends on a combination of resistance force and hydrodynamic.

  • Springback is an essential task to be solved in order to make high-precision products in sheet metal forming. In this study, materials with four different elastic regions were used. For the forming analysis, the change of springback caused by the frictional force generated in the flange part during hat shape forming was considered by using the AutoForm analysis program. Factors affecting frictional force were blank holder force, friction coefficient, bead R and bead height. As a result of the forming analysis, the springback increases as the material with a larger elastic region increases. In addition, as the frictional force of the flange part increased, the tensile force in the forming direction increased and the springback decreased. In particular, the blank holder force and friction coefficient had a great effect on springback in mild materials (DC04, Al6016), and the bead effectively affects all materials. Through this study, it was considered that the springback decreased as the material with a smaller elastic region and the tensile force in the forming direction increased.

  • In this study, it was studied whether a new measurement factor "frictional vibration" that occurs due to the material flow of the die and sheet metal in the flange area during deep drawing process, could be measured using an vibration sensor. The blank holder force acting on the flange area during drawing processing acts as a friction force in the opposite direction into which the sheet material flows and causes friction vibration. As the blank holder force increases, the friction force increases, and as the blank holder force decreases, the friction force also decreases. Because of this, friction vibration also increases and decreases in proportion to the size of the blank holder force. According to this theory, whether frictional vibration occurs was measured using a flange simulator and a vibration sensor. The initial pressure was created using a torque wrench, and it was confirmed that the amplitude increased by about 4 times when torque 6 Nm was increased. When the forming velocity was rapidly changed to 300 mm/min, the amplitude increased approximately 4 times. It was confirmed that the amplitude of frictional vibration according to the measurement location was greater the further away from the specimen. It was verified that a new measurement factor "friction vibration" in the flange area can be measured and used for online monitoring.

  • There are two kinds of method to calculate the equivalent friction coefficients at V groove. One is to consider the firction in radial direction. The other is to neglect the friection in radial direction. The values calculated from the two methods is different of which ratio is in the range from two times to five times. So it is necessary to study which is correct in the view of force equilibrium and machine design.

  • As the design rules in semiconductor manufacturing process become more and more stringent, the higher degree of planarization of device surface is required for a following lithography process. Also, it is great challenge for chemical mechanical polishing to achieve global planarization of 12” wafer or beyond. To meet such requirements, it is essential to understand the CMP equipment and process itself. In this paper, authors suggest the velocity distribution on the wafer, direction of friction force and the uniformity of velocity distribution of conventional rotary CMP equipment in an analytical method for an intuitive understanding of variation of kinematic variables. To this end, a novel dimensionless variable defined as “kinematic number” is derived. Also, it is shown that the kinematic number could consistently express the velocity distribution and other kinematic characteristics of rotary CMP equipment.
