When exposed to uniform magnetic fields externally applied, paramagnetic particles acquire dipole moments and the induced moments interacting with each other lead to the formation of chainlike structures or clusters of particles aligned with the field direction. A direct simulation method, based on the Maxwell stress tensor and a fictitious domain method, is applied to solve flows with magnetic chains in simple shear flow. We assumed that the particles constituting the chains are paramagnetic, and inertia of both flow and magnetic particles is negligible. The numerical scheme enables us to take into account both hydrodynamic and magnetic interactions between particles in a fully coupled manner, enabling us to numerically visualize breakup and reformation of the chains by the combined effect of the external field and the shear flow. Simple shear flow with suspended magnetic chains is solved in a periodic domain for a given magnetic field. Dynamics of interacting magnetic chains is found to be significantly affected by a dimensionless parameter called the Mason number, the ratio of the viscous force to the magnetic force in the shear flow. The effect of particle area fraction on the chain dynamics is investigated as well.
The flow past a circular cylinder forced to vibrate transversely is numerically simulated by solving the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations modified by the vibration velocity of a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of 164. The higher-order finite difference scheme is employed for the spatial discretization along with the second order Adams-Bashforth and the first order backward-Euler time integration. The calculated cylinder vibration frequency is between 0.60 and 1.30 times of the natural vortex-shedding frequency. The calculated oscillation amplitude extends to 25% of the cylinder diameter and in the case of the lock-in region it is 60%. It is made clear that the cylinder oscillation has influence on the wake pattern, the time histories of the drag and lift forces, power spectral density and phase diagrams, etc. It is found that these results include both the periodic (lock-in) and the quasi-periodic (non-lock-in) state. The vortex shedding frequency equals the driving frequency in the lock-in region but is independent in the non-lock-in region. The mean drag and the maximum lift coefficient increase with the increase of the forcing amplitude in the lock-in state. The lock-in boundaries are also established from the present direct numerical simulation.
The flow past a circular cylinder forced to vibrate transversely is numerically simulated by solving the two-dimensional Wavier-Stokes equations modified by the vibration velocity of a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of 164. The higher-order finite difference scheme is employed for the spatial discretization along with the second order Adams-Bashforth and the first order backward-Euler time integration. The calculated cylinder vibration frequency is between 0.60 and 1.30 times of the natural vortex-shedding frequency. The calculated oscillation amplitude extends to $25\%$ of the cylinder diameter and in the case of the lock-in region it is $60\%$.
Lock-on phenomenon in the wake of a circular cylinder is investigated at the Reynolds number of 360 using direct numerical simulation (DNS). To induce lock-on, a streamwise velocity perturbation with a frequency of twice the natural shedding frequency is superimposed on the free stream velocity. The Reynolds stress distributions are investigated to analyze the streamwise force balance acting on the recirculation region and the results are compared with the previous experimental result. When the lock-on occurs, the pressure force on the recirculation region is shown to increase mainly due to the reversal of the Reynolds shear stress distribution, which is consistent with our previous results using PIV measurement. It is also shown that, with the lock-on, the strength of the primary vortices increases whereas that of the secondary vortices decreases significantly. Further, under the lock-on condition the wavelength of the secondary vortices increases by as much as 2.5 times.
Three-dimensional time-dependent flow past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated using direct numerical simulation for Reynolds number 280 and 300. The higher-order finite difference scheme is employed for the spatial distributions along with the second order Adams-Bashforth and the first order backward-Euler time integration. In x-y plane, the convection term is applied by the 5th order upwind scheme and the pressure and viscosity terms are applied by the 4th order central difference. And in spanwise, Navier-Stokes equation is distributed using of Spectral Method. At Reynolds number 259 the two-dimensional wake becomes linearly unstable to a second branch of modes with wavelength about 1.0 diameters at onset (B-mode). Present results of three-dimensional effects of in wake of a circular cylinder is represented with spanwise and streamwise vorticity contours as Reynolds numbers.
The results of simulation of direct methane fuel cell fed with liquid-state methanol feed are shown. This numerical process is based on mass and current conservation equations. The results showed that over low current density $(<200mA/cm^2)$ IV polarization curve was well-presented compared to experimental result. Methanol fed from anodic side moved into cathodic side through electrolyte membrane and the pressure near cathode electrode increased according to amount of methanol crossover and production of water. Besides change of overpotential on each el electrode were checked by x-axis.
We present an immersed boundary (IB) method for 3D simulation of flappingflags in a uniform flow. The proposed formulation is manipulated on the basis of an efficient Navier-Stokes solver adopting the fractional step method and a staggered Cartesian grid system. A direct numerical method is developed to calculate the flag motion, with the elastic force treated implicitly. The fluid motion defined on an Eulerian grid and the flag motion defined on a Lagrangian grid are independently solved and the mass of flag is handled in a natural way. An additional momentum forcing is formulated from the flag motion equation in a way similar with the direct-forcing IB formulation and acts as the interaction force between the flag and ambient fluid. A series of numerical tests are performed and the present results are compared qualitatively and quantitatively with previous studies. The instantaneous flag motion is analyzed under different conditions and surrounding vortical structures are identified. The effects of physical parameters on the flapping frequency are studied.
Direct Numerical Simulation was carried out to predict mass transfer in turbulent flow around a rotating stepped cylinder. This investigation is a follow-up study of DNS of turbulent flow in Nesic et al. [Corrosion, Vol. 56, No. 10, pp. 1005 - 1014] The original motivation of this work stemmed from the efforts to design a simple device which can generate flows of high turbulence intensity at low cost for corrosion researchers. Two cases were considered; Sc=1 and 10 both at Re=335. Here, Sc and Re stand for Schmidt number and Reynolds number, respectively, based on the step height and the surface speed of the cylinder upstream of the step. Main focus was placed on the correlation between turbulence and mass transfer. The spatio-temporal evolution of concentration field is discussed. The numerical results are qualitatively compared with those of the experiment conducted with a similar flow configuration.
Aeolian tone generation from a two dimensional circular cylinder is numerically investigated via direct numerical simulation and hydrodynamic-acoustic splitting method. All governing equation are spatially discretized with the sixth-order compact scheme and fourth-order Runge-Kutta method to avoid excessive numerical dissipations and dispersions of acoustic quantities. Comparisons of two results show that the previous splitting method can not accurately predict the aeroacoustic noise of wall bounded shear flow. In this study, a perturbation viscous term and a new energy equation have been developed. This modified splitting method accurately predicts aeroacoustic noise from wall-bounded shear flow. The present results agree very well with the direct numerical simulation solution.
A direct numerical simulation is performed for turbulent heat transfer in a concentric annulus at $Re_{Dh}=8900\;and\;Pr=0.71$ for two radius ratios ($R_{1}/R_{2}=0.1\;and\;0.5$) and $q^{\ast}=1.0$. Main emphasis is placed on the transverse curvature effect on near-wall turbulent thermal structures. Near-wall turbulent structures close to the inner and outer walls are scrutinized by computing the lower-order statistics. The fluctuating temperature variance and turbulent heat flux budgets are illustrated to confirm the results of the lower-order statistics. The present numerical results show that the turbulent structures near the outer wall are more activated than those near the inner wall, which may be attributed to the different vortex regeneration processes between the inner and outer walls.
