COMBUSTION STABILITY OF DIESEL-FUELED HCCI

  • Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) shows great potential for low $NO_x$ emission but is hampered by the problem of no direct method to control the combustion process. Therefore, HCCI combustion becomes unstable easily, especially at lower and higher engine load. This paper presents a method to achieve diesel-fueled HCCI combustion, which involves directly injecting diesel fuel into the cylinder before the piston arrives at top dead center in the exhaust stroke and adjusting the valve overlap duration to trap more high temperature residual gas in the cylinder. The combustion stability of diesel-fueled HCCI combustion and the effects of engine load, speed, and valve overlap on it are the main points of investigation. The results show that: diesel-fueled HCCI combustion has two-stage heat release rate (low temperature and high temperature heat release) and very low $NO_x$ emission, combustion stability of the HCCI engine is worse at lower load because of misfire and at higher load because of knock, the increase in engine speed aids combustion stability at lower load because the heat loss is reduced, and increasing negative valve overlap can increase in-cylinder temperature which aids combustion stability at lower load but harms it at higher load.

Saccharomyces와 Hansenula의 혼합배양에 의해 제조한 민속증류수의 향미특성 (Flavor Characteristics of Korean Traditional Distilled Liquors Produced by the Co-culture of Saccharomyces and Hansenula)

  • Andong Soju is a Korean traditional distilled liquor brewed with Nuruk which is cultured with wild microorganisms. To provide useful information for scientific production and systematic quality control of traditional distilled liquor, the effects of mixed culture of the alcoholic yeasts and saccharifying molds isolated from the Nuruk, and mashes on the flavor and sensory characteristics were investigated. Distillate from mashes cocultured with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Hansenula anomala using Mucor Nuruk was compared with distillate from mashes brewed with Andong Nuruk and with distillate from plant fermented mashes to analyze their flavor characteristics. The volatile flavor compounds in distillates were analyzed by GC and GC-MS using direct injection, solvent extraction, and purge & trap methods. Alcohols such as 3-methyl-1-butanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol, 1-propanol, and 2-phenyl ethanol; aldehydes such as acetaldehyde and 2-furancar-boxaldehyde; esters such as ethyl ester of acetic acid, hexanoic acid, octanoic acid, decanoic acid; alkanes, alkenes, ketone, sulfur, and pyrone compounds were detected. Alcohols were chief components of flavor compounds. No significant difference in overall acceptability test was shown among three experimental groups(p<0.05), but Nuruk-like aroma, Kaoliangchiew-like aroma, sweet taste, and well rounded mouthfeel showed significant differences among them(p<0.05).

Heat Treatment Effects of Staggered Tunnel Barrier (Si3N4 / HfAlO) for Non-volatile Memory Application

  • NAND형 charge trap flash (CTF) non-volatile memory (NVM) 소자가 30nm node 이하로 고집적화 되면서, 기존의 SONOS형 CTF NVM의 tunnel barrier로 쓰이는 SiO2는 direct tunneling과 stress induced leakage current (SILC)등의 효과로 인해 data retention의 감소 등 물리적인 한계에 이르렀다. 이에 따라 개선된 retention과 빠른 쓰기/지우기 속도를 만족시키기 위해서 tunnel barrier engineering (TBE)가 제안되었다. TBE NVM은 tunnel layer의 전위장벽을 엔지니어드함으로써 낮은 전압에서 전계의 민감도를 향상 시켜 동일한 두께의 단일 SiO2 터널베리어 보다 빠른 쓰기/지우기 속도를 확보할 수 있다. 또한 최근에 각광받는 high-k 물질을 TBE NVM에 적용시키는 연구가 활발히 진행 중이다. 본 연구에서는 Si3N4와 HfAlO (HfO2 : Al2O3 = 1:3)을 적층시켜 staggered의 새로운 구조의 tunnel barrier Capacitor를 제작하여 전기적 특성을 후속 열처리 온도와 방법에 따라 평가하였다. 실험은 n-type Si (100) wafer를 RCA 클리닝 실시한 후 Low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD)를 이용하여 Si3N4 3 nm 증착 후, Atomic layer deposition (ALD)를 이용하여 HfAlO를 3 nm 증착하였다. 게이트 전극은 e-beam evaporation을 이용하여 Al를 150 nm 증착하였다. 후속 열처리는 수소가 2% 함유된 질소 분위기에서 $300^{\circ}C$$450^{\circ}C$에서 Forming gas annealing (FGA) 실시하였고 질소 분위기에서 $600^{\circ}C{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$까지 Rapid thermal annealing (RTA)을 각각 실시하였다. 전기적 특성 분석은 후속 열처리 공정의 온도와 열처리 방법에 따라 Current-voltage와 Capacitance-voltage 특성을 조사하였다.

Solid Phase Extraction of Phospholipids from Brazil Nut (Bertholletia excelsa) and Their Characterization by Mass Spectrometry Analysis

  • The Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa - Lecythidaceae) is considered a product with high economic value, being a food widely appreciated for its nutritional qualities. Although previous studies have reported the biochemical composition of Brazil nut oil, the knowledge regarding the phospholipid composition exhibits a disagreement: the composition of fatty acids present in the structures of phospholipids is reported as being different from the composition of the free fatty acids present in the oil. In this work, solid phase extraction (SPE) was employed to provide a fast extraction of the phospholipids from Brazil nuts, in order to compare the phospholipid profile of the in nature nuts and their fatty acids precursor present in the oil. The major phospholipids were characterized by mass spectrometry approach. Their fragmentation pattern through direct infusion electrospray ionization ion-trap tandem mass spectrometry ($ESI-IT-MS^2$) proved to be useful to unequivocal characterization of these substances. High resolution (HR) experiments through ESI using a quadruple time of flight mass spectrometry (QTOF) system were performed to reinforce the identifications.

디젤엔진에서 수소 환원제 공급 조건에 따른 LNT 촉매 성능 (Performance of LNT Catalyst according to the Supply Condition of Hydrogen Reductants for Diesel Engine)

  • The direct injection(DI) diesel engine has become a prime candidate for future transportation needs because of its high thermal efficiency. However, nitrogen oxides(NOx) increase in the local high temperature regions and particulate matter (PM) increases in the diffusion flame region within diesel combustion. Therefore, the demand for developing a suitable after treatment device has been increased. NOx absorbing catalysts are based on the concept of NOx storage and release making it possible to reduce NOx emission in net oxidizing gas conditions. This De-NOx system, called the LNT(Lean NOx Trap) catalyst, absorbs NOx in lean exhaust gas conditions and release it in rich conditions. This technology can give high NOx conversion efficiency, but the right amount of reducing agent should be supplied into the catalytic converter at the right time. In this research, a performance characteristics of LNT with a hydrogen enriched gas as a reductant was examined and strategies of controlling the injection and rich exhaust gas condition were studied. The NOx reduction efficiency is closely connected to the injection timing and duration of reductant. LNT can reduce NOx efficiently with only 1 % fuel penalty.

Morphology-Controlled Fabrication of ZnS Nanostructures with Enhanced UV Emission

  • ZnS is well-known direct band gap II-VI semiconductor, and it attracts intense interest due to its excellent properties of luminescence which enable ZnS to have promising materials for optical, photonic and electronic devices. Especially, the emission wavelength of ZnS falls in the UV absorption band of most organic compoundsand biomolecules, thus it is envisaged that ZnS based devices may find applications in increasingly important fluorescence sensing. We have developed a facile and effective one-step process for the fabrication of single-crystalline and pure-wurtzite ZnS nanostructures possessing sharp band-edge emission at room-temperature having diverse length-to-width ratios. Each of nanostructures was composed of chemically pure, structurally uniform, single-crystalline, and defect-free ZnS. These features not only suppress trap or surface states emission centered at 420 nm, but also enhance UV band-edge emission centered at 327 nm, which give as-synthesized our ZnS nanostructures possible sharp UV emission at room temperature. The reaction medium consisting of mixed solvents such as hydrazine, ethylenediamine, and water as well as proper reaction time and temperature have played an important role in the crystallinity and optical properties of ZnS nanostructures. As-synthesized our ZnS nanostructures possessing sharp UV emission guarantee high potential for both fundamental research and technological applications.

A Simple and Simultaneous Analysis of Volatile Halogenated Hydrocarbons in Indoor Air Using Personal Sampler

  • To understand the human exposure levels of volatile halogenated hydrocar-bons in ambient air, a new rapid and convenient analytical method for determination of the compounds in gaseous phase was evaluated and established. The method is based upon passsive diffusion to personal sampler containing adsorbent and solvent extraction followed by purge trap/ on-column cryof-ocusing method. A new method needs no special instrumentation for gas collection because it is based upon the passive diffusion principle. The typical chromatogram obtained in this study proved that rapid and simultaneous determination of target analytes was possible with good resolution. The developed method was successfully applied to determine the volatile halogenated hydrocarbons in indoor air and the values obtained by this new method were compared with those by direct suction method. The concentration of carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,2-trichloroethylene, chloroform showed the values below 400$\mug/m^3$ except the maximum of 1,513$\mug/m^3$ of chloroform. 1,1,1-Trichloroethane showed approximately 1,000 to 5,000$\mug/m^3$ range of diurnal fluctuation in indoor air.

전하주입조건에 따른 비휘발성 MNOS 기억소자의 기억유지특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Retention Characteristics with the Charge Injection Conditions in the Nonvolatile MNOS Memories)

  • The switching and the retention characteristics with the injection conditions(pulse height and pulse width) were investigated in the nonvolatile MNOS memories with thin oxide layer of $23{\AA}$ thick. The shift of flatband voltage was measured using the fast ramp C-V method and experimental results were analized using the previously developed models. It was shown that the experimental results were described quit well by the trap-assisted and modified Fowler-Nordheim tunneling models for the voltage pulse of $15V{\sim}19V,\;24V{\sim}25V$, respectively. However, the direct tunneling model was agreement with experimental values in all range of pulse height. As increasing the initial shift of the flatband voltage, the decay rate was increased. But for the same initial shift of the flatband voltage, the decay rate was smaller for low and long pulse than for high and short one.

  • The present investigation aims at visualizing the crack tip stress field using a mechanoluminescence material. The well known compound $SrAl_2O_4$:$Eu^{2+}$ was adopted as a mechanolurninescence material. Two more trivalent rare-earth elements such as Dy and Nd were taken into consideration as codopants to provide the appropriate trap levels. Samples of a variety of compositions were prepared by varing $Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$, and $Nd^{3+}$ doping contents, for which the combinatorial chemistry method was used. In order to search for the optimum composition for the highest mechanoluminescence, the luminescence induced by a compressive device including a CCD camera. In parallel, a compact tension specimen was prepared by mixing the luminescence powders of optimum composition and epoxy resin. Crack initiation from the mechanically machined sharp note tip and its growth during loading were found to be associated with the extent of light emission from $SrAl_2O_4$.

Composition and Abundance of Wood-Boring Beetles Inhabited by Pine Trees

  • Plants are consumed by a myriad of organisms that compete for resources. Direct interactions among multiple plant-feeding organisms in a single host can range for each species from positive to negative. Wood-boring beetle faces a number of biotic and abiotic constraints that interfere with the good prospects from the tree. Biotic factors, including arthropod pests and diseases, and abiotic factors, such as drought and water-logging, are the major constraints affecting the species. The present study aimed to provide basic data for analyzing forest health, identify the kinds of wood-boring beetles in the central part of Korea. Our second goal was to analyze the species composition and diversity of regional communities and to examine. A total of 10,461 individual wood-boring beetles belonging to 8 families and 50 species attracted to trap trees in the pine forests were recorded during the study period on study sites. The results of the analysis of collected species showed that the community structure on all study sites was similar. Seasonal occurrences of dominant wood-boring beetles (5 species) from each study site showed the highest number of all species, except for Siphalinus gigas in May, followed by a gradual decline, and the largest number of Siphalinus gigas appeared in June. The similarity index of species composition was relatively high, ranging from 0.75 to 0.90 for each study site.
