The focus of this research effort was characterization of the flexural and tensile properties of a specific ultra-high-strength, fiber-reinforced concrete material. The material exhibited a mean unconfined compressive strength of approximately 140 MPa and was reinforced with short, randomly distributed alkali resistant glass fibers. As a part of the study, coupled experimental, analytical and numerical investigations were performed. Flexural and direct tension tests were first conducted to experimentally characterize material behavior. Following experimentation, a micromechanically-based analytical model was utilized to calculate the material's tensile failure response, which was compared to the experimental results. Lastly, to investigate the relationship between the tensile failure and flexural response, a numerical analysis of the flexural experiments was performed utilizing the experimentally developed tensile failure function. Results of the experimental, analytical and numerical investigations are presented herein.
This paper summarizes the results of a study which uses the recently developed Optical Profile Microscopy technique (Dove and Frost, 1996) as the basis for investigating the role of geomembrane surface roughness on the shear mechanism of geomembrane/geotextile interfaces. The alternative roughness parameters which consider the direction of shearing are described. These directional parameters are compared with the existing roughness parameters, and the relationship between these directional and non-directional parameters are investigated. Then, the relationship between interface shear strength and surface roughness quantified at the interface is investigated. The results show that interface friction can be quantitatively related to the surface roughness of the geomembrane. The peak and residual interface strengths increase dramatically through the use of textured geomembranes as opposed to smooth geomembranes. For the smooth geomembranes, the sliding of the geotextile is the main shear mechanism. For the textured geomembranes, the peak interface strength is mainly mobilized through the micro-texture of the geomembrane, however, the residual interface strength is primarily attributed to macro scale surface roughness which pulls out and breaks the filaments from the geotextile. The results of this study can be extended to the other interfaces such as joints in rock mass, and also can be used to provide a quantitative framework that can lead to a significantly improved basis for the selection and design of geotextiles and geomembranes in direct contact.

The present paper describes a general procedure of the structural safety assessment for the independent type C tank of LNG bunkering ship. This strength assessment procedure consists of two main scheme, global Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model primarily for hull structure assessment and detailed LNG Tank structures FEA model including the cylindrical tank itself and saddle-support structures. Two kinds of mechanism are used, fixed and slides constraints in fore and rear of the saddle-support structures that result in a variation of the reaction forces. Finite Element (FE) analyses have been performed and verified by the strength acceptance criteria to evaluate the safety adequacy of yielding and buckling of the hull and supporting structures. The detail of FE model for an LNG type C tank and its saddle supports was made, which includes the structural members such as cylindrical tank shell, ring stiffeners, swash bulkhead, and saddle supports. Subsequently, the FE buckling analysis of the Type C tank has been performed under external pressure following International Gas Containment (IGC) code requirements. Meanwhile, the assessment is also performed for yielding and buckling strength evaluation of the cylindrical LNG tank according to the PD 5500 unfired fusion welded pressure vessels code. Finally, a complete procedure for assessing the structural strength of 500 CBM LNG cargo tank, saddle support and hull structures have been provided.

Recent years, direct displacement-based design (DDBD) procedure is proposed for the design of un-bonded posttensioned (UPT) concrete wall systems. In the DDBD procedure, the determination of the equivalent viscous damping (EVD) ratio is critical since it would influence the strength demand of the UPT wall systems. Nevertheless, the influence of EVD ratio determination of the UPT wall systems were not thoroughly evaluated. This study was aimed to investigate the influence of different EVD ratio determinations on the DDBD procedure of UPT wall systems. Case study structures with four, twelve and twenty storeys have been designed with DDBD procedure considering different EVD ratio determinations. Nonlinear time history analysis was performed to validate the design results of those UPT wall systems. And the simulation results showed that the global responses of the case study structures were influenced by the EVD ratio determination.

In cold-formed steel (CFS) structures, such as trusses, wall frames and columns, the use of back-to-back built-up CFS angle sections are becoming increasingly popular. In such an arrangement, intermediate fasteners are required at discrete points along the length, preventing the angle-sections from buckling independently. Limited research is available in the literature on the axial strength of back-to-back built-up CFS angle sections. The issue is addressed herein. This paper presents the results of 16 experimental tests, conducted on back-to-back built-up CFS screw fastened angle sections under axial compression. A nonlinear finite element model is then described, which includes material non-linearity, geometric imperfections and explicit modelling of the intermediate fasteners. The finite element model was validated against the experimental test results. The validated finite element model was then used for the purpose of a parametric study comprising 66 models. The effect of fastener spacing on axial strength was investigated. Four different cross-sections and two different thicknesses were analyzed in the parametric study, varying the slenderness ratio of the built-up columns from 20 to 120. Axial strengths obtained from the experimental tests and finite element analysis were used to assess the performance of the current design guidelines as per the Direct Strength Method (DSM); obtained comparison showed that the DSM is over-conservative by 13% on average. This paper has therefore proposed improved design rules for the DSM and verified their accuracy against the finite element and test results of back-to-back built-up CFS angle sections under axial compression.
The purpose of this study is to provide and evaluate the tensile properties of masonry element such as tensile strength, strain, modulus of elasticity and stress-strain relationship through the direct tension test with varies of mortar strength. From the experiment, the tension fracture was observed along the interfaces between the brick and the mortar. Tension properties of masonry element was significantly affected by compressive strength of mortar, $f_m$, indicating that higher tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of masonry element were obtained with increase of $f_m$. The strain of a masonry element was inversely proportional to $f_m$ due to the lower ductility of a higher mortar strength. A tensile stress-strain relationship of masonry element was generalized based on the numerical analysis and the regression analysis using test data. The proposed model shows fairly good agreement with the test measurements.
Two types of barge, container and tanker vessels, are designed with specific dimensions for canal-coastal shipping in Kyung-In canal and Yellow Sea region. The principal dimensions of barges are determined by considering the environment of Kyung-In canal and Yellow Sea. The selection of structure type and structure type and strength confirmation is conducted by the technical rules of Korean Register of Shipping. For the structural analysis of designed barges, the semi-direct stuctural analysis is carried out with using MSC NASTRAN software. Applying identical dimensions to both vessels, the standardization of structural design and analysis procedure are introduced.
As the Arctic sea ice decreases due to various reasons such as global warming, the demand for ships and offshore structures operating in the Arctic region is steadily increasing. In the case of sea ice, the anisotropy is caused by the uncertainty inside the material. For most of the research, nevertheless, estimating the ice load has been treated deterministically. With regard to this, in this paper, a four-point bending strength analysis of an ice specimen was attempted using a stochastic finite element method. First, spatial distribution of the material properties used in the yield criterion was assumed to be a multivariate Gaussian random field. After that, a direct method, which is a sort of stochastic finite element method, and a sensitivity method using the sensitivity of response for random variables were proposed for calculating the probabilistic distribution of ice specimen strength. A parametric study was conducted with different mean vectors and correlation lengths for each material property used in the above procedure. The calculation time was about ten seconds for the direct method and about three minutes for the sensitivity methods. As the cohesion and correlation length increased, the mean value of the critical load and the standard deviation increased. On the contrary, they decreased as the friction angle increased. Also, in all cases, the direct and sensitivity methods yielded very similar results.
