The exhaust emissions of diesel engine are recognized as a major cause influencing environment strongly. In this study, the possibility of biodiesel fuel and oxygenated fuel(dimethoxy methane; DMM) was investigated as an alternative fuel for a naturally aspirated direct injection diesel engine. The smoke emission of blending fuel(biodiesel fuel 90vol-%+DMM 10vol-%) was reduced approximately 70% at 2500rpm, full load, in comparison with the diesel fuel. But, power, torque and brake specific energy consumption showed no significant differences. But, NOx emission of biodiesel fuel and DMM blended fuel increased compared with commercial diesel fuel due to the oxygen component in the fuel. It was needed a NOx reduction counterplan that EGR method was used as a countermeasure for NOx reduction. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx emission was achieved with BDF(95 vol-%) and DMM(5 vol-%) blended fuel and cooled EGR method(15%).

The goals of this research are to understand the $NO_x$ emission in direct injected diesel engine with premixed hydrogen fuel. Hydrogen fuel was supplied into the test engine through the intake pipe. Amount of hydrogen-supplemented fuel was 70 percent basis heating value of the total fuel. The effects of intake air temperature on $NO_x$ emission were studied. The intake air temperature was controlled by flow rate of liquid nitrogen. The major conclusions of this work include : (i) the tested engine was run without backfire under 70 percent hydrogen fuel supplemented. (ii) radicals of nitrogen gas in the intake pipe were increased by 30 percent and cylinder gas temperature was decreased by 24 percent as the intake air temperature were changed from $23^{\circ}C$ to $0^{\circ}C$ ; and (iii) $NO_x$ emission per unit heating value of supplied fuel was decreased by 45 percent with same decrease of intake air temperature.
In the past, it. was very difficult to distinguish thermal and non-thermal emission. Broadbent et a1. (1989) has developed a new technique with the help of the IRAS 60 micron emission. The distribution of non-thermal or synchrotron emission in the Galactic disk has been modeled from the 408 MHz all sky survey of Haslam et a1. (1982) after removal of the thermal component.. At. 408 MHz, t.here is very little absorption in the interstellar medium and the distribution along the line-of-sight. is inferred mainly from its presumed relationship to other tracers of spiral structure via a. number of fitted parameters. But. at lower frequencies, free-free absorption becomes important and can give some direct. information on the line of sight. distribution. We have modeled the thermal electron density according to the spiral arm models and the distribution of ionized hydrogen in the Galactic plane by Lockman (1976) and Cersosimo et. al. (1989) and have made predictions to compare with the surveys of Dwarakanath et al. (1990) at. 34.5 MHz and .Jones and Finlay (1974) at 29.9 MHz. The result confirms that the absorption model of the synchrotron emissivity in the Galactic plane is broadly corrected and illustrates the potential of the absorption technique.

Recently, we have a lot of interest in alternative fuels to provide energy independence from oil producing country and to reduce exhaust emissions for air pollution prevention. Biodiesel, which can be generated from natural renewable sources such as new or used vegetable oils or animal fats, may be used as fuel in diesel engine of compression ignition engine. In this paper, the test results on specific fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of neat diesel oil and biodiesel blends(10 vol.% biodiesel and 20 vol.% biodiesel) were presented using four stroke, direct injection diesel engine, especially this biodisel was produced from soybean oil at our laboratory. This study showed that Soot and CO emission were decreased as the blending ratios of biodiesel to diesel oil increased, on the other hand NOx emission was slightly increased because of the oxygen content in biodiesel. Also, the biodiesel blends yielded slightly higher specific fuel consumption than that of diesel oil because of lower heating value of biodiesel.
In this paper, the effect of oxygen component in fuel on the exhaust emissions has been investigated for a direct injection diesel engine. It was tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the commercial diesel fuel and oxygenated blended fuel which has seven kinds of mixed ratio. And, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission have been investigated. Ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether(EGBE) contains oxygen component 27% in itself, and it is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel of mono-ether group that the smoke emission of EGBE blended fuel is reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficiently at higher loads and speeds in a diesel engine. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with oxygenated fuel and cooled EGR method.

The emission of particulate matter from marine diesel engines is already restricted by regional regulations in some countries, and IMO has been preparing the regulation for particulate matter from 53rd MEPC. But confusingly, the gravimetric PM measurement methods and procedures are not established clearly yet. On the other hand, smoke measurement method is set clearly, and it can also indicate PM, though it is not direct gravimetric method. As the preparing step for regulations about PM, we measured the smote density of exhaust emission from the marine four-stroke diesel engines operated in constant speed and various load steps on the test-bed, using the filter-type smoke measuring instrument. As a result, we understood the omission characteristics of smoke from the engines. Additionally, to obtain the objective reliability of our measurement data, we carried out experimental studies about various measuring parameters that could affect the smoke density.

Diesel engines have high thermal efficiency, and they have less CO & HC emissions than another engines. while NOx & Soot emissions are very much. compared with exhaust emission standards. However, the limit level is more and more strengthened yearly due to the importance of environmental protection. So, the optimal countermeasures for the reduction of NOx & Soot emissions below limit level are required. Therefore. the author has investigated the effects of emulsified fuel on the characteristics of exhaust emissions. using an four-cycle, four-cylinder and direct injection diesel engine because the using of emulsified fuel among various methods for reducing NOx & Soot emissions is simple in installation low in cost and high in efficiency. The results of investigation according to various operating conditions are as follows : 1) Specific fuel consumption increase maximum 19.8% at low load. but is not affected at full load. 2) In case of emulsion ratio 25%, NOx emission decrease 32% at 75% load. 30% at full load. 3) In case of emulsion ratio 25%, Soot emission decrease 84% at 75% load, 59% at full load.
As the regulations for Particulate Matter (PM) and Particle Number (PN) emissions from Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) Vehicle stringent recently, a lot of studies have been made on the emission characteristics of PM and PN. In this study, PM and PN emission characteristics were compared to GDI and Multi Port Injection (MPI) Vehicles using the Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) measurement equipment. And driving mode is divided into normal driving mode (CVS-75, NEDC, NIER 6, NIER 9) and a constant speed driving mode (10 km/h, 35 km/h, 80 km/h, 110 km/h) to evaluate the characteristics in the various operating conditions. In the results, most of the driving mode, PM and PN were emitted from GDI Vehicle more than MPI Vehicle. However, in the constant speed mode of 110 km/h, PM and PN from MPI Vehicle were also a lot of emission. It is determined to cause a difficulty in the fuel injection control of the MPI Vehicle.

Since the oil shock of 1970's there was a strong upward tendency for the use of the high viscosity and poorer quality fuels. Therefore the misfiring engine occurs due to the decrease of quantity injected for lean burn and emission control in CI diesel engine. In this study, it is designed and used the test bed which is installed with turbocharger and intercooler. In addition to equipped using CRDI by controlling injection timing with mapping modulator, it has been tested and analyzed the engine performance, combustion characteristics, and emission as operating parameters.
The aim of this work is to investigate the spray and combustion characteristics of dimethyl-ether (DME) at various injection conditions. The spray characteristics such as spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were experimentally studied from the spray images which obtained from the spray visualization system. Combustion and emissions characteristics were numerically investigated by using KIVA-3V code coupled with Chemkin chemistry solver. From these results, it revealed that DME spray had a shorter spray tip penetration and wider spray cone angle than that of diesel spray due to the low density, low surface tension, and fast evaporation characteristics. At the constant heating value condition, DME fuel showed higher peak combustion pressure and earlier ignition timing, because of high cetane number and superior evaporation characteristics. In addition, the combustion of DME exhausted more $NO_x$ emission and lower HC emission due to the active combustion reaction in the combustion chamber. The result shows that DME had a little soot emission due to its molecular structure characteristics with no direct connection between carbons.
