In diverse hydrogeologic fields, estimation of groundwater storage change is one of the most critical issues. Accurate estimation methods for determining groundwater storage change are required more and more. For Yeonyang area of Ulsan Megacity, groundwater storage change was estimated by using water balance method and hydrogeological analyses. The estimates of groundwater storage change was 240 mm corresponding to 18.7% of mean annual precipitation. Direct runoff was calculated as 137 mm (10.6% of mean annual precipitation) by using SCS-CN method. Evapotranspiration based on the Thornthwaite method was calculated as 776 mm (60.5% of mean annual precipitation). Hydraulic properties of the soil types do not show any distinct relation with hydraulic conductivity of the rocks. This fact suggests that hydraulic property on the surface is different from that of subsurface geology. According to multi-linear regression analysis between groundwater storage change and hydraulic parameters, a regression equation of groundwater storage change, which was explained by precipitation and evapotranspiration, was established.
In this research, a kinematic wave model was applied for the runoff analysis, Regulation of streamflow was estimated by the calibration of roughness coefficient as a parameter. The data analyzed were obtained from Ananomiya and Shirasaka experimental basins at Tokyo University Forest in Aichi. Estimation methods and characteristics of roughness coefficient as a evaluation method of hydrological function of forest are summarized as follows ; 1. Roughness coefficient($N_s$) indicates the resistance of hillslope to the flowing water of surface runoff. There exists an hypothesis that resistance of hillslope to flowing water increase with the growth forest and development of the $A_o$ layer. 2. Roughness coefficient($N_s$) was estimated by the parameter when the stream direct runoff was calculated by using the kinematic wave. 3. Secular change of '$N_s$' in ananomiya has a curve which has an upper limit and increases exponentially near the limit. The curve quickly increased from 1935 to 1945 when results of afforestation for erosion control were thought to be effective. On the other hand, slight increase of '$N_s$' in Shirasaka indicates that there was not such a big change in the surface of soil layer. 4. The increase of '$N_s$' was related with decrease of direct runoff and increase of base flow. It was recognized that the rate of direct runoff decreased with the improvement of forest physiognomy and the rate of base flow was increased. But absolute value of water runoff per one storm decreased in chronological order.

Soil erosion has been emphasized as serious environmental problem affecting water quality in the receiving waterbodies. Recently, Best Management Practices (BMPs) have been applied at a field to reduce soil erosion and its effectiveness in soil erosion reduction has been monitored with various methods. Although monitoring at fields/watershed outlets would be accurate way for these ends, it is not possible at some fields/watersheds due to various limitations in direct monitoring. Thus modeling has been suggested as an alternative way to evaluate effects of the BMPs. Most models, which have been used in evaluating hydrology and water quality at a watershed, could not reflect rainfall intensity in runoff generation and soil erosion processes. In addition, source codes of these models are not always public for modification/enhancement. Thus, runoff-sediment evaluation system using hourly rainfall data and vegetated filter strip (VFS) evaluation module at field level were developed using open source MapWindow GIS component in this study. This evaluation system was applied to Bangdongri, Chuncheonsi to evaluate its prediction ability and VFS module in this study. The NSE and $R^2$ values for runoff estimation were 0.86 and 0.91, respectively, and measured and simulated sediment yield were 15.2 kg and 16.5 kg indicating this system, developed in this study, can be used to simulate runoff and sediment yield with acceptable accuracies. Nine VFS scenarios were evaluated for effectiveness of soil erosion reduction. Reduction efficiency of the VFS was high when sediment inflow was small. As shown in this study, this evaluation system can be used for evaluation BMPs with local rainfall intensity and variations considered with ease-of-use GIS interface.
Potential maximum soil moisture retention (S) is a dominant parameter in the Soil Conservation Service (SCS; now called the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)) runoff Curve Number (CN) method commonly used in hydrologic modeling for event-based flood forecasting (SCS, 1985). Physically, S represents the depth [L] soil could store water through infiltration. The depth of soil moisture retention will vary depending on infiltration from previous rainfall events; an adjustment is usually made using a factor for Antecedent Moisture Conditions (AMCs). Application of the method for continuous simulation of multiple storms has typically involved updating the AMC and S. However, these studies have focused on a time step where S is allowed to vary at daily or longer time scales. While useful for hydrologic events that span multiple days, this temporal resolution is too coarse for short-term applications such as flash flood events. In this study, an approach for deriving a time-variable potential maximum soil moisture retention curve (S-curve) at hourly time-scales is presented. The methodology is applied to the Napa River basin, California. Rainfall events from 2011 to 2012 are used for estimating the event-based S. As a result, we derive an S-curve which is classified into three sections depending on the recovery rate of S for soil moisture conditions ranging from 1) dry, 2) transitional from dry to wet, and 3) wet. The first section is described as gradually increasing recovering S (0.97 mm/hr or 23.28 mm/day), the second section is described as steeply recovering S (2.11 mm/hr or 50.64 mm/day) and the third section is described as gradually decreasing recovery (0.34 mm/hr or 8.16 mm/day). Using the S-curve, we can estimate the hourly change of soil moisture content according to the time duration after rainfall cessation, which is then used to estimate direct runoff for a continuous simulation for flood forecasting.
The researches on the parameter estimation for storage function method have been conducted for a long time using different methods. However, the determination of the optimal parameters takes a long time and there is a controversy that the proposed optimal parameters do not likely represent the physical characteristics of watershed. In this study, the characteristics of the continuity and storage function equation was analyzed and sensitivities were evaluated. As the result, the only optimal solution is suggested among several local optimums. It is also shown that the lag time is able to be determined using the direct runoff starting time of the watershed. From the sensitivity analysis, it is also proved that the determination of the lag time is very important and the only optimal solution could be found easily after selecting the lag time. Therefore, unlike the traditional optimization method, the proposed method does not take a long time to find the optimal solution which is depending on the characteristics of the rainfall events. The fixed coefficient method which is a method to estimate the optimal parameters of storage function method has been modified using the proposed method. Therefore, the practical efficiency to apply storage function method could be enhanced by applying the proposed method. While the traditional method takes care only the error of the runoff hydrograph, it is very important that the proposed method considers the characteristics of the watershed.

This study is aimed at estimating and mitigating the impact of urban development on watershed hydrology for new town experienced with dramatical change of land use from rural to urban. The climate change scenario, representative concentration pathway (RCP), revealed direct response of runoff depth to precipitation, which increased until year 2100. The types of areas for urban use in addition to climate change affected the efficiencies of bioretention, applied as a low impact development (LID). Combining different areas for urban use suggested that a possible approach to mitigate the urban development impact on watershed hydrology by supplementing captured rainfall potential from area to area and attenuating peak discharge and retarding its time of concentration.

Increased Non-permeable areas which have resulted from civilization reduce the volume of groundwater infiltration that is one of the important factors causing water shortage during a dry season. Thus, seeking the efficient method to analyze the volume of groundwater in accurate should be needed to solve water shortage problems. In this study, two different watersheds were selected and precipitation, soil group, and land use were surveyed in a particular year in order to figure out the accuracy of estimated infiltration recharge ratio compared to Web-based Hydrograph Analysis Tool (WHAT). The volume of groundwater was estimated considering Antecedent soil Moisture Condition (AMC) and Curve Number (CN) using Long Term Hydrologic Impact Assessment (L-THIA) model. The results of this study showed that in the case of Kyoung-an watershed, the volume of both infiltration and baseflow seperated from WHAT was 46.99% in 2006 and 33.68% in 2007 each and in Do-am watershed the volume of both infiltration and baseflow was 33.48% in 2004 and 23.65% in 2005 respectively. L-THIA requires only simple data (i.e., land uses, soils, and precipitation) to simulate the accurate volume of groundwater. Therefore, with convenient way of L-THIA, researchers can manage watershed more effectively than doing it with other models. L-THIA has limitations that it neglects the contributions of snowfall to precipitation. So, to estimate more accurate assessment of the long term hydrological impacts including groundwater with L-THIA, further researches about snowfall data in winter should be considered.

One of the main factor that effects on the CN's value in SCS Curve Number method for the estimation of direct runoff is the antecedent soil moisture condition (AMC). It is also common to use the AMC-III in hydrologic practice, which provides the largest runoff as possible. In this paper, AMC defending on the rainfall characteristics is analyzed using daily rainfall data at rainy season (June~September) of the Seoul station from 1961 to 2002. The probability mass function of AMC is also investigated to analyze the variation of AMC based on climate change, scenarios from several General Circulation Model (GCM) predictions. As a results we can find that the occurrence of AMC-I is reduced, and AMC-III is increased, whereas AMC-II does not change.

TMDL development and implementation have great potential fur use in efforts to improve water quality management, but the TMDL approach still has several difficulties to overcome in terms of cost, time requirements, and suitable methodologies. A well-defined prioritization approach for identifying watersheds of concern among several tar-get locations that would benefit from TMDL development and implementation, based on a simple screening approach, could be a major step in solving some of these difficulties. Therefore, a web-based decision support system (DSS) was developed to help identify areas within watersheds that might be priority areas for TMDL development. The DSS includes a graphical user interface based on the HTML protocol, hydrological models, databases, and geographic information system (GIS) capabilities. The DSS has a hydrological model that can estimate non-point source pollution loading based on over 30 years of daily direct runoff using the curve number method and pollutant event mean concentration data. The DSS provides comprehensive output analysis tools using charts and tables, and also provides probability analysis and best management practice cost estimation. In conclusion, the DSS is a simple, affordable tool for the preliminary study of TMDL development via the Internet, and the DSS web site can also be used as an information web server for education related to TMDL.
