In this paper, a life distribution fitting method based on generalized phase-type distributions(GPH) is presented. By fitting the life distribution to a GPH, we can utilize various useful properties of the GPH. Two different approaches are used according to the properties of the given failure time data. One is an approximation to a GPH through the piecewise Weibull failure rate(PWF) model and the other is a direct approximation to a GPH using the empirical distribution function. Two numerical examples are also presented. In the first example, both of the two approaches are utilized and compared for an incomplete data set. And in the second example, the direct approximation method from an empirical distribution is utilized for the analysis of a complete data set. In both cases, we could confirm the validity of the proposed method.

Design sensitivity analysis is proposed for the optimal shape design of three-dimensional magnetostatic problems. The direct differentiation method is introduced for design sensitivity analysis and the boundary element method with reduced magnetic scalar potential as the state variable is used to analyze the magnetic characteristics. In the direct differentiation method, the design sensitivity, defined as the total derivative of the objective function with respect to the design variables, is calculated based on the variation of the state variable with respect to the design variable. And the variation of the state variable is calculated by differetiating the both sides of the system matrix equation obtained by applying boundary element method. Through the numerical example with simple electromagnet, the usefulness is proved.
This paper presents a numerical study on the flat plates in deep basements, subjected to floor load and in-plane compressive load due to soil and hydraulic lateral pressure. For nonlinear finite element analysis, a computer program addressing material and geometric nonlinearities is developed. The validity of the numerical model is established by comparison with existing experiments performed on plates simply supported on four edges. The flat plates to be studied are designed according to the Direct Design Method in ACI 318-95. Through numerical study on the effects of different load combinations and loading sequence, the load condition that governs the strength of the flat plates is determined. For plates under the governing load condition, parametric studies are performed to investigate the strength variations with reinforcement ratio, aspect ratio, concrete strength, and slenderness ratio. Based on the numerical results, the floor load magnification factor is proposed.

A simple method is presented for determining transient responses of locally nonlinear structures using substructure eigenproperties and Lagrange multiplier technique. Although the method is based upon the mode synthesis formulation procedure, the equations of the combined whole structure are not constructed compared with the conventional methods. Lagrange multi-pliers are used to enforce the conditions of geometric compatibility between the substructure interfaces and they are treated as external forces on each substructure itself. Substructure eigenvalue problem is defined with the substructure interface free of fixed. The transient analysis is based upon the recurrence discrete-time state equations and offers the simplicity of the Euler integration method without requiring small time increment and iterative solution procedure. Numerical examples reveal that the method is very accurated and efficient in calculating transient responses compared with the direct numerical integration method.

This study presents a new gridless finite difference method for solving elastic crack problems. The method constructs the Taylor expansion based on the MLS(Moving Least Squares) method and effectively calculates the approximation and its derivatives without differentiation process. Since no connectivity between nodes is required, the modeling of discontinuity embedded in the domain is very convenient and discontinuity effect due to crack is naturally implemented in the construction of difference equations. Direct discretization of the governing partial differential equations makes solution process faster than other numerical schemes using numerical integration. Numerical results for mode I and II crack problems demonstrates that the proposed method accurately and efficiently evaluates the stress intensity factors.
A splitting method for the direct numerical simulation of solid-liquid mixtures is presented, where a symmetric pressure equation is newly proposed. Through numerical experiment, it is found that the newly proposed splitting method works well with a matrix-free formulation fer some bench mark problems avoiding an erroneous pressure field which appears when using the conventional pressure equation of a splitting method. When deriving a typical pressure equation of a splitting method, the motion of a solid particle has to be approximated by the 'intermediate velocity' instead of treating it as unknowns since it is necessary as a boundary condition. Therefore, the motion of a solid particle is treated in such an explicit way that a particle moves by the known form drag (pressure drag) that is calculated from the pressure equation in the previous step. From the numerical experiment, it was shown that this method gives an erroneous pressure field even for the very small time step size as a particle velocity increases. In this paper, coupling the unknowns of particle velocities in the pressure equation is proposed, where the resulting matrix is reduced to the symmetric one by applying the projector of the combined formulation. It has been tested over some bench mark problems and gives reasonable pressure fields.

In this study, a simplified analysis method was developed to evaluate the fatigue damage of an ice-going ship under broken ice condition. The global ice load, which is essentially calculated at the design stage of the Arctic vessel, and the hull form information were used to estimate the local ice load acting on the outer-shell of the ship. The local ice load was applied to the finite element analysis model, and the Weibull parameters for the target fatigue point were derived. Finally, fatigue damage was evaluated by applying the S-N curve and the Palmgren-Miner rule. For the verification of the proposed method, numerical analyses using direct approach were performed for the same conditions. A numerical model that implements the interaction between ice and structure was introduced to verify the local ice load and the stress calculated from the proposed method. Finally, the fatigue analyses of the Baltic Sea for actual ice conditions were performed, and the results of the proposed method, the method using numerical analysis, and the LR method were compared.

The purpose of this study is to analyze hydraulic characteristics of surface irrigation in a paddy field of direct seeding culture. Field experiment was performed in the paddy field of ridge direct dry seeding. Simulation by a numerical model was also accomplished with the data obtained from the field experiment. The model was developed by one dimensional zero-inertia equation and finite difference method. From the result of the field observation, the furrows of the experimental field were found to have various geometric characteristics. Advance distance and time were measured both in the field and by the model simulation for various furrow lengths and irrigation discharges. Roughness coefficients of each furrow were also estimated by the model.
A new approach to analyze the multi-domain acoustic system divided and enclosed by flexible structures is presented in this paper. The boundary element formulation of the Helmholtz integral equation is used for the internal fields and the finite element formulation for the structures surrounding the fields. We developed a numerical analysis program for the structural-acoustic coupling problems of the multi-domain system, in which boundary conditions such as the continuity of normal particle velocity and sound pressure in the structural interfaces between Field 1 and Field 2 are not needed. The validity of the numerical analysis program is verified by comparing the numerical results with the experimental ones. Example problems are included to investigate the characteristics of the coupled multi-domain system.
Pumping performance of a disk-type molecular drag pump for a hybrid molecular pump is numerically analyzed by the direct simulation onte-Carlo method. The flows in pumping channels are three-dimensional (3D) in a molecular transition regime. The main difficulty in modeling a 3D case comes from the rotating frame of reference. Thus, trajectories of particles ar no longer straight lines. In the present study, trajectories of particles are calculated by integrating a system of differential equations including the Coriolis and centrifugal forces. The null-collisions. The present numerical results molecular model is used for calculation of molecular collisions. The present numerical results significantly disagree with the previously known ones. This indicates that an actual pumping passage is very limited to a narrow region due to the significant backstreaming of molecules from the outlet.
