Concentration characteristics of the KIER solar furnace are analyzed with a heat flux measurement technique. Total heat capacity of 40kW was confirmed within 1.04% average error, and the normalized maximum heat flux of 3,452 $kW/m^2$ was proved. Non-Gaussian flux distribution in the vertical direction implies that reflectors should not be random rather inclined downwards. Moreover, we characterized flux distribution variations with furnace blind opening ratio, distance from the focal plane, and misalignment of the measurement system. Based on the results, the heat flux distribution can be simply estimated once reflectivity and direct normal insolation values are known. This study will be helpful to the design and the performance evaluation of receivers or chemical reactors.

There are many industrial applications including thin-body structures such as fins. For the numerical modeling of radiation of sound from thin bodies, the conventional boundary element method (BEM) using the Helmholtz integral equation fails to yield a reliable solution. Therefore, many researchers have tried to solve the thin-body acoustic problems. In the area of the design sensitivity analysis (DSA) and optimization methods, however, there has been just a few study reported. Especially fur the thin-body acoustics, however, no further study in the DSA and optimization fields has been reported. In this research, the normal derivative integral equation is adopted as an analysis formulation in the thin-body acoustics, and then used for the sizing DSA and optimization. Since the gradient-based method is used for the optimization, it is important to have accurate gradients (design sensitivities) of the objective function and constraints with respect to the design variables. The DSA formulations are derived through chain-ruled derivatives using the finite element method (FEM) and BEM by using the direct differentiation and continuum variation concepts. The proposed approaches are implemented and validated using a numerical example.
The Electric Power Subsystem (EPS) is one of the most critical systems on any satellite because nearly every subsystem requires power. This makes the choice of power systems the most important task facing satellite designers. The main purpose of the Satellite EPS is to provide continuous, regulated and conditioned power to all the satellite subsystems. It has to withstand radiation, thermal cycling and vacuums in hostile space environments, as well as subsystem degradation over time. The EPS power characteristics are determined by both the parameters of the system itself and by the satellite orbit. After satellite separation from the launch vehicle (LV) to its orbit, in almost all situations, the satellite subsystems (attitude determination and control, communication and onboard computer and data handling (OBC&DH)), take their needed power from a storage battery (SB) and solar arrays (SA) besides the consumed power in the EPS management device. At this point (separation point, detumbling mode), the satellite's angular motion is high and the orientation of the solar arrays, with respect to the Sun, will change in a non-uniform way, so the amount of power generated by the solar arrays will be affected. The objective of this research is to select satellite EPS component types, to estimate solar array illumination parameters and to determine the efficiency of solar arrays during both detumbling and normal operation modes.

We report the performance of a four-element, 11.67 GHz, $high-{T}_c$ superconducting (HTS) microstrip antenna array with corporate feed network. The HTS antenna array used in this work had a circular polarization for direct broadcasting satellite (DBS) system. Our array antennas were designed and built on a 0.5 mm thick MgO substrate. To compare the superconducting antennas with normal conducting counterpart, One antenna pattern was fabricated from gold thin film, and a second pattern was fabricated from ${YBa}_2{Cu}_3{O}_7-x(YBCO)$ superconducting thin film. To improve the axial ratio of circularly polarized arrays, sequential rotation technique were used. Efficiency, radiation pattern, return loss and bandwidth were measured for both antennas at cryogenic temperature and room temperature. The array produced good circular polarization, and the gain of the array at 77 K, relative to a copper array at room temperature was approximately 1.54 dB. The measured return loss of our HTS antenna array was 35.79 dB at the resonant frequency of 11.67 GHz and The total effective bandwidth was about 3.4 %. The results showed that high-temperature superconductors, when used in microstrip arrays, improved the efficiency of the HTS antenna array for circularly polarization.
Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive form of human adult brain malignancy. The identification of the cell of origin harboring cancer-driver mutations is the fundamental issue for understanding the nature of GBM and developing the effective therapeutic target. It has been a long-term hypothesis that neural stem cells in the subventricular zone (SVZ) might be the origin-of-cells in human glioblastoma since they are known to have life-long proliferative activity and acquire somatic mutations. However, the cell of origin for GBM remains controversial due to lack of direct evidence thereof in human GBM. Our recent study using various sequencing techniques in triple matched samples such as tumor-free SVZ, tumor, and normal tissues from human patients identified the clonal relationship of driver mutations between GBM and tumor-free SVZ harboring neural stem cells (NSCs). Tumor-free SVZ tissue away from the tumor contained low-level GBM driver mutations (as low as 1% allelic frequency) that were found in the dominant clones in its matching tumors. Moreover, via single-cell sequencing and microdissection, it was discovered that astrocyte-like NSCs accumulating driver mutations evolved into GBM with clonal expansion. Furthermore, mutagenesis of cancer-driving genes of NSCs in mice leads to migration of mutant cells from SVZ to distant brain and development of high-grade glioma through the aberrant growth of oligodendrocyte precursor lineage. Altogether, the present study provides the first direct evidence that NSCs in human SVZ is the cell of origin that develops the driver mutations of GBM.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of the teflon encapsulated TLD rod, which may be used in nuclear medicine for the direct in vivo measurements of radiation dose. We analyzed the influence of teflon encapsulation for measuring absorbed dose. An experiment was carried out to evaluate and observe the response of a LiF TLD-100 rod in a thin-wall teflon capsule at different depths in a solid phantom. An adult anthropomorphic phantom was used to measure the absorbed dose using thin teflon encapsulated TLD. The measurements of PDD-, and TMR in solid phantom and athe bsorbed dose in humanoid phantom performed with normal TLD were compared with values obtained by teflon encapsulated TLD. It was demonstrated that the difference of TL response of LiF in phantom with and without teflon thin-wall capsule was less than 3% under the same conditions beyond the build-up region. However, significant differences were observed near the phantom surface because of the build-up effect caused by the thin-wall thickness of the teflon capsule. Thus, our study showed that the contribution of teflon thin-wall capsule to TLD response for the megavoltage photon beams was negligible and that it did not significantly effect dose measurement. The teflon encapsulated TLD described in this work has been proven to be appropriate for in vivo dosimetry in therapeutic environments.

Purpose: Heat transfer analysis of recently developed 'slim type double-skin system window' were presented. This window system is designed for curtain wall type façade that main energy loss factor of recent elegant buildings. And the double skin system is the dual window system integrated with inner shading component, enclosed gap space made by two windows when both windows were closed and shading component effectively reflect and terminate solar radiation from outdoor. Usually double-skin system requires much more space than normal window systems but this development has limited by 270mm, facilitated for curtain wall façade buildings. In this study, we estimated thermophysical phenomena of our double-skin curtain wall system window with solar load conditions at the summer season. Method: A fully 3-Dimentional analysis adopted for flow and convective and radiative heat transfer. The commercial CFD package were used to model the surface to surface radiation for opaque solid region of windows' frame, transparent glass, fluid region at inside of double-skin and indoor/outdoor environments. Result: Steep angle of solar incident occur at solar summer conditions. And this steep solar ray cause direct heat absorption from outside of frame surface rather than transmitted through the glass. Moreover, reflection effect of shading unit inside at the double-skin window system was nearly disappeared because of solar incident angle. With this circumstances, double-skin window system effectively cuts the heat transfer from outdoor to indoor due to separation of air space between outdoor and indoor with inner space of double-skin window system.
Stirling engine for solar thermal power is an essential part of Dish-Stirling system which generates electricity by using direct normal irradiation and will go into commercialization in near future. For the Stirling engine used in this study is Solo 161 model the capacity of which is 10 kWe and was already used for the Dish-Stirling system of KIER in Jinhae. The receiver of Stirling engine absorbes concentrated solar radiation and transfer it to working fluid of Hydrogen. The working condition of striling engine is high temperature and high pressure to make high efficiency. Therefore the receiver should stand against high temperature of above 800 $^{\circ}C$ and high pressure of max. 150 bar with good performance of heat transfer. The receiver is composed of 78 Inconel tubes of 1/8" with thickness of 0.71 mm and two reserviors which is connected with two cylinders. In order to know the charaterristics of heat transfer of Stirling engine receiver, simulation on the heat transfer of the receiver of Solo 161 is conducted by using CFD code of Fluent. The heat flux on the receiver surface has a shape of Gaussian distribution so, it is necessary to simulate a whole receiver. However, It is difficult and time consuming to simulate the whole receiver that one tube with different heat flux conditions are considered in this study. From the simulation results, heat transfer charateristics of receiver are observed and tube wall and fluid temperature and heat transfer coefficient are obtained and compared with the calculated results from Dittus-Boelter's correlation.

The angular dependence (or profile) of backscattered ultrasound was measured for steel specimens with a range of surface roughness, $1{\sim}71{\mu}m$. Backscattering profiles at or near the Rayleigh angle still showed roughness dependence while the assessment of surface roughness via normal profile became impossible due to the paint layer masking the roughness. The peak amplitude directly radiated at the Rayleigh angle was proportional to the surface roughness, while the averaged peak amplitude radiated from the backward propagating Rayleigh wave, produced by reflection at a corner, was inversely proportional. In the painted specimens, the linearity of direct backward radiation with the roughness was observed even at the roughness of less than three hundredths of a wavelength, and the abnormal multiple bark reflection caused by periodic roughness disappeared.

Bow shock, formed by the interaction between the solar wind and a planet, is generated in different patterns depending on the conditions of the planet. In the case of the earth, its own strong magnetic field plays a critical role in determining the position of the bow shock. However, in the case of Mars of which has very a small intrinsic magnetic field, the bow shock is formed by the direct interaction between the solar wind and the Martian ionosphere. It is known that the position of the Martian bow shock is affected by the mass loading-effect by which the supersonic solar wind velocity becomes subsonic as the heavy ions originating from the planet are loaded on the solar wind. We simulated the Martian magnetosphere depending on the changes of the density and velocity of the solar wind by using the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic model built by modifying the comet code that includes the mass loading effect. The Martian exosphere model of was employed as the Martian atmosphere model, and only the photoionization by the solar radiation was considered in the ionization process of the neutral atmosphere. In the simulation result under the normal solar wind conditions, the Martian bow shock position in the subsolar point direction was consistent with the result of the previous studies. The three-dimensional simulation results produced by varying the solar wind density and velocity were all included in the range of the Martian bow shock position observed by Mariner 4, Mars 2, 3, 5, and Phobos 2. Additionally, the simulation result also showed that the change of the solar wind density had a greater effect on the Martian bow shock position than the change of the solar wind velocity. Our result may be useful in analyzing the future observation data by Martian probes.
