  • In this study, the beamforming characteristics of a reflector antenna, such as a phased array antenna, as a feeder have been studied. The beamforming characteristics were examined by observing the actual steering angle of the reflector according to the diameter, the F/D of the reflector, and the number of array elements of the feeder. In addition, the beamforming characteristics were verified by measurement using a reflector of 1.5 m diameter and a four-element log-periodic dipole array(LPDA).

  • In this study, we provide a single element log-periodic antenna that the feeding networks and array structures are aperture coupled and series dipole array type. We made the antenna for direct receiving the Moogoongwha satellite broadcasting signal. The transmission power was able to feed the patch dipole in series due to lay perpendicularly 8 series patch dipole on tapered slot. The patch dipole radiation pattern which fed in series power, make the main beam direction up $37^{\circ}{\sim}42^{\circ}$ within the BS/CS bandwidth. The main beam gain was measured 9.31~11.03 dBi. Using 32 elements to array the elements properly, we acquire $4{\times}8$ array structure on limited PCB board. As a result, it has been found that the new planar DBS antenna structure have high gain over 10dBi and acceptable elevation angle over 42 degree, and we can apply this result to commercial DBS reception antenna manufacturing.

  • This paper presents a method of moments with the transmission line theory to analyze the sleeve dipole array antennas and analyses characteristics of that. There were several considerations for analysis of the method of moments. First, the method of moments were applied at both of the sleeve dipole elements and the coaxial line because the current flows on both of them. Second, the feed voltages of each sleeve dipole element were obtained by using a transmission line theory because the feeding structure is fed by coaxial line in series. Third, the series reactance between the coaxial line and the open side of the sleeve was considered as impedance loading on the antenna. The radiation patterns and current distributions from the numerical results were considered as variation of the feed distances and frequencies. To verify the validity of our method, 4 elements sleeve dipole array antennas with 1 λg distance were fabricated and measured, and then the measured radiation patterns were compared with the numerical results. The measured results were confirmed a good agreement with the numerical results.

  • In this paper, a low-profile dipole array antenna with monopole-like radiation for on-body communications is proposed. The proposed antenna, operating in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band, is designed with consideration of the human body effect. By placing eight planar dipole antenna elements symmetrically around the z-axis, the proposed antenna achieves monopole-like radiation characteristics with a low profile. The antenna has overall dimensions of $0.44{\lambda}_0{\times}0.44{\lambda}_0{\times}0.013{\lambda}_0$ at 2.45 GHz in the ISM 2.45 GHz band (2.4-2.485 GHz) and a 10-dB return loss bandwidth of 4.9% ranging from 2.4 to 2.52 GHz.

  • In this paper, we studied a wideband double-sided dipole antenna operating at 3.5 GHz (WiMAX) band. The each printed dipoles are placed on the both sides of the substrate. It can be easily implemented and is suitable for connection with an active circuit. In order to obtain wideband printed dipole characteristics, thick rectangular shaped dipole is adopted. Feeding Circuit for dipole array and balun were designed for impedance matching with a $50{\Omega}$ microstrip feed line. The antenna is designed by simulation for an operation in the frequency range of 3.4~3.7 GHz Simulation results show that the maximum gain in the 3.5 GHz band is 5.5 dBi and the bandwidth with VSWR less than 2 is about 1 GHz.

  • In this paper, a log periodic bow-tie dipole array (LPBDA) antenna for UWB communications is investigated. Bow-tie shaped dipole elements are used instead of general dipole elements for LPDA antennas and the input reflection coefficient and realized gain characteristics of the LPBDA as a function of a flare angle are analyzed. It turns out that as the flare angle of the bow-tie dipole elements is increased, the lowest operating frequency is shifted toward lower frequency and the operating frequency band is increased, but the average gain is decreased. However, the gain variation of the LPBDA is much decreased and the front-back ratio is improved compared to the LPDA. Standard LPDA and LPBDA with a flare angle of 13 degrees are fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a dielectric constant of 4.4 and a thickness of 1.6 mm. Measured gain for the LPDA ranges from 4 to 6.5 dBi at 3.1 to 10.6 GHz band, while that for the LPBDA is in the range of 4.2 to 5 dBi.

  • In this paper, the rectangular reflector antenna with 8-dipole array for PCS band (1,750 MHz ~ l,870 MHz) and IMT-2000 band(1,885 MHz ~ 2,200 MHz) is designed and the radiation characteristics are analyzed using the method of moments and HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator). To verify the analysis results, rectangular reflector antenna with 8-dipole array is fabricated and the calculated results are compared with the measured results. The measured results show good agreement with the calculated results. As a result of measurements, bandwidth(VSWR< 1.5) of 450 MHz is achieved at PCS and IMT-2000 band and gain is 16 dBi. The designed antenna can be used as the base station antenna for PCS/IMT-2000.

  • A fast correlative vector direction finding(CVDF) system using active dipole antenna array for mobile direction finding(DF) applications is presented. To develop the CVDF system, the main elements such as active dipole antenna, multi-channel direction finder, and search receiver are designed and analyzed. The active antenna is designed as composite structure to improve the filed strength sensitivity over the wide frequency range, and the multi-channel direction finder and search receiver are designed using DDS-based PLL with settling time of below 35 us to achieve short signal processing time. This system provides the capabilities of the high DF sensitivity over the wide frequency range and allows for high probability of intercept and accurate angle of arrival(AOA) estimation for agile signals. The design and performance analysis according to the external noise and modulation schemes of the CVDF system with five-element circular array are presented in detail.

  • This paper describes beam-tilting characteristics of horizontally polarized EMCD (electromagnetically coupled dipole) array antennas. The result of one element radiator is used for array elements designs and is evaluated its characteristics. Theoretical frequency characteristics and radiation pattern of the horizontally polarized EMCD array antennas analyzed by FDTD method agree well with the measured results of the practically fabricated way antennas. The measured main beam tilt ang1e and 3 dB beam width of the fabricated 20-element array antennas are 47$^{\circ}$and about $\pm$7.5$^{\circ}$, respectively. A good radiation pattern and beam tilting characteristics are observed in experiments.

  • This paper presents a basic characteristics of 4-element circular array dipole antennas for 4-sector beam steering. The coupled integral equations for the unknown current distributions on dipole elements are derived and solved by applying Galerkin's method of moments. The parasitic elements have been used to increase the directional gain and the beam is steered electronically either by sswitching between the parasitic elements or switching the position of the active element. The parasitic elements are switched short-circuited or open-circuited as required to steer a directional beam. In order to verify the theoretical analysis, the radiation pattern was compared with experiments.
