  • This article proposes a design of chipless RFID tag with dipole array structure that is fully printable using conductive ink. The proposed tags encode data based on spectral signature modulations. The reading range is considerably increased (2 m) while maintaining low transmission power (1 mW). Several prototype chipless RFID tags were fabricated and measured in the SHF and UHF bands. The proposed dipole array structure enhances the antenna gain of the passive tags and contributes to overcoming the low conductivity of conductive ink. In order to verify the utility of our proposal, the tags are manufactured on paper, using conductive ink, for the purpose of economic mass production.

  • The design and analysis of the transversely fed EMC(electromagnetically coupled) microstrip dipole have been accomplished by using the integral equation and MOM(method of moment)in frequency domain in order to find the current distribution of the dipole. In this study, we proposed the possibilities for design and analysis of EMC micro-strip dipole array antenna by means of calculating the current distribution of each dipole directly using the FDTD(finite difference time domain) method. In this case, we applied the formulation which is the finite difference expression of the Maxwell's integral equation. From the current distribution of each dipole, we calculated the far field electric component and showed that the calculation process and running time was reduced with respect to the method which calculates the radiation field with surface electric and magnetic current density.

  • Electromagnetically coupled coaxial dipole (ECCD) array antenna with and without short-ended termination is investigated theoretically. The integral equations are derived for the structure by use of the Fourier transform and mode expansion of radial waveguide. The integrals appearing in the integral equations are evaluated along the branch cut instead of real axis for a faster convergent integral. The effects of slots and dipoles, short-ended termination length, and dielectric coating on the radiation characteristics are presented. Radiation pattern of the structure is also investigated. The results of the present method are compared with those of the commercial EM simulator and good agreement is found.

  • In this paper, we studied miniaturization of LPDA(Log-Periodic Dipole Array) antenna used for VHF and UHF bands. To miniaturize the LPDA antenna, in this study, the radiation elements in a low frequency were changed into a triangular meander structure which has small current cancelation effect at feed part. For the triangular meander structure, an isosceles triangular and right triangular meander structures were proposed and the LPDA antennas were miniaturized by using the two meander structures. Also, the simulated and measured results were compared for the two miniaturized LPDA antennas. As a result, the isosceles triangular meander and right angle triangular meander structure applied LPDA antennas were reduced up to 60.5 % and 72.4 % compared a basic LPDA antenna, respectively. Consequently, we confirmed that the triangular meander structure is suitable for miniaturization of a LPDA antenna.

  • This paper describes a design for linear polarization antenna using the EMCD (electromagnetically coupled dipole). The analysis and the design of model antennas are conducted by FDTD method. Vertical and horizontal linear polarizations are easily obtained by variation of dipole position. In 1-element antenna design, mutual coupling between microstrip feed line and radiator is considered. Design parameters of each 1-element antenna with vertical and horizontal polarization are used for array design. Radiation power and main beam tilting angle can be controlled by the offset and the distance between radiating elements in an array, respectively. 5-element array antennas are fabricated and measured to prove the design validity. The results of FDTD simulation and measurement show the reasonable agreement.

  • In this paper, bandwidth improvement of a series-fed two dipole array(STDA) antenna applicable for mobile communication base station antennas is studied. The proposed STDA antenna consists of two strip dipole antennas with different lengths which are connected directly trough a coplanar stripline(CPS). By adjusting the spacing between the two dipoles and the length of the second dipole, the bandwidth of the STDA can be enhanced. In addition, an integrated balun composed of a short-circuited microstrip line and a slot line is utilized to minimize the area required for a feeding part, and a broadband impedance matching is obtained by adjusting the feeding point. Based on the proposed antenna structure, an STDA antenna covering the frequency band ranging from 1.75 GHz to 2.7 GHz, which includes almost all the existing mobile communication frequency bands, with more than 5 dBi gain is designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate with dielectric constant of 4.4 and thickness of 1.6mm, and experimentally tested. The fabricated antenna shows impedance bandwidth of 49%(1.7-2.8 GHz) for VSWR<2, a gain higher than 5.5 dBi, and a front-back ratio better than 12 dB.

  • The compact dipole antenna elements and array structure is proposed. The array structure is designed for applicator in regional hyperthermia treatment to enhance the uniformity of the heat distribution which makes the treatment effective and prevents overheating. The compact dipole is designed with branched dipole and matching network to have small size and symmetric shape. The temperature simulation with specific absorption rate(SAR) and bio-heat equation is performed to have heat distribution. The applicator is designed, fabricated, and measured with multi-channel thermometer in 30 and 60 minutes. The simulation and measurement results showed agreement and the simulation in body circumstance has proper temperature result for hyperthermia therapy.

  • In this paper, we proposed a beam tilting microstrip patch array antenna for the reception of satellite signals by using low cost copper etched polyester films and foams. The configuration and coupling mechanism of the proposed antenna are similar to the dipole Yagi-Uda antenna. It is composed of 3 layers of polyester films and three layers of foam. In order to prevent unwanted radiation and coupling loss by microstrip feeding networks and parasitic patches, a stacked layer with rectangular slots above the driver patch array is inserted. The 16${\times}$8 element microstrip Patch way antenna is Presented by experimental results. Its beam patterns are affected by many parameters such as sizes of the patches, gap between the patches. characteristics of the substrates, feeding method, etc. Owing to its complexities of various design parameters, both simulation and experiment were performed. The fabricated antenna received DBS signal from KOREASAT 3 by doing nothing but adjusting azimuth direction.

  • Genetic algorithms (GA) is a well known technique that is capable of handling multiobjective functions and discrete constraints in the process of numerical optimization. Together with the Pareto ranking scheme, more than one possible solution can be obtained despite the imposed constraints and multi-criteria design functions. In view of this unique capability, the design of the log-periodic dipole antenna array (LPDA) using this special feature is proposed in this paper. This method also provides gain, front-back level and S parameter design tradeoff for the LPDA design in broadband application at no extra computational cost.

  • This paper describes beam-tilting characteristics of horizontally polarized EMCD (electromagnetically coupled dipole) array antennas. The result of one element radiator is used for array elements designs and is evaluated its characteristics. Theoretical frequency characteristics and radiation pattern of the horizontally polarized EMCD array antennas analyzed by FDTD method agree well with the measured results of the practically fabricated way antennas. The measured main beam tilt ang1e and 3 dB beam width of the fabricated 20-element array antennas are 47$^{\circ}$and about $\pm$7.5$^{\circ}$, respectively. A good radiation pattern and beam tilting characteristics are observed in experiments.
