Spray Characteristics of Dimethyl Ether(DME) Fuel Compared to Various Diesel Fuels

  • It is recognized that alternative fuel such as dimethyl ether (DME) has better combustion polluting characteristics than diesel fuel, even though the cetane number of DME is almost the same as that of diesel. Characteristics of DME spray were observed experimentally under various ambient conditions using a constant volume chamber and a common-rail injection system. N-dodecane and LPG fuel sprays were also observed under same conditions of DME spray. Using spray images from backlight scattering and Mie scattering, characteristics of fuel sprays such as penetration and spray volume were visualized and quantitatively measured. The measurements showed that the penetration of early period decreased remarkably, because evaporation of alternative fuels became prosperous by the influence of flash boiling phenomenon under the condition of the low temperature and pressure compared with n-dodecane. The penetration of DME and LPG spray received the influence of temperature more largely in comparison with low density, because the specific surface area increased by atomizing in high density.

  • The present study is mainly motivated to investigate the vaporization, auto-ignition and combustion processes in high-pressure engine conditions. In order to realistically simulate the dimethyl ether (DME) spray dynamics and vaporization characteristics in high-pressure and high-temperature environment, the high-pressure vaporization model is utilized. The interaction between chemistry and turbulence is treated by employing the Representative Interaction Flamelet(RIF) model. The detailed chemistry of 336 elementary steps and 78 chemical species is used for the DME/air reaction. Numerical results indicate that the RIF approach, together with the high-pressure vaporization model, successfully predicts the essential feature of ignition and spray combustion processes.

Dehydration of Methanol to Dimethyl ether, Ethylene and Propylene over Silica-Doped Sulfated Zirconia

  • Two types of catalyst samples were prepared, one sulfated zirconia and the other silica doped sulfated zirconia. The acidity tests indicate that sulfated zirconia doped with silica has higher concentration and strength of acidic catalyst sites than undoped sulfated zirconia. The acidic surface sites have been characterized using FTIR, NMR, pyridine adsorption, TPD, XRD and nitrogen adsorption. Doping with silica increased the concentration of surface Lewis and Brfnsted acid sites and resulted in generation of proximate acid sites.The activity test indicates that doping sulfated zirconia with silica increases both the acidity and catalytic activity for liquid phase dehydration of methanol at 413-453 K. Methanol is sequentially dehydrated to dimethyl ether and ethylene over both catalysts. Significant amounts of propylene are also formed over the silica-doped catalyst, but not over the undoped catalyst.

고압에서 DME-Air 혼합기의 화염속도 측정 (Measurement of Laminar Flame Speeds of Dimethyl Ether-Air Mixtures at High Pressure)

  • Spherically expanding flames are used to measure flame speeds, which are derived the corresponding laminar flame speeds at zero stretch. Dimethyl Ether-Air mixtures at high pressure are studied over an extensive range of equivalence ratios. The classical shadowgraph technique is used to detect the reaction zone. In analytical methodology the optimization process using least mean squares is performed to extract the laminar flame speeds. It is seen that the laminar flame speed of DME-Air mixture with the increase of pressure decreases rapidly showing a similar trend to other hydrocarbon fuels. At pressure of 2 and 10 atm the experimental data from the present study agree well with results reported in the literature. Especially the laminar flame speeds at 2 atm are in good agreement with those calculated in numerical work over the full stoichiometric range. At elevated pressure of 12 atm the measured data are slightly slower at fuel lean condition and show close agreement at fuel rich condition when compared with the numerical results.

  • Methods for the selective functionalization of calix[4]arene at the upper rim are described. The diametrically substituted calix[4]arene dimethyl ether 2, obtained from the treatment of calix[4]arene 1 with methyl iodide in the presence of $K_2CO_3$, is converted to the two isomeric p-diacetylcalix[4]arene dimethyl ether 3 and 6 by direct substitution and by Fries rearrangement of corresponding diacetyloxycalix[4]arene dimethyl ether 5 respectively. Diametrically substituted p-diacetylcalix[4]arene 8 was also prepared by Fries rearrangement of calix[4]arene tetraacetate 7 using a limited amount of $AlCl_3$.

Concurrent Production of Methanol and Dimethyl Ether from Carbon Dioxide Hydrogenation : Investgation of Reaction Conditions

  • The concurrent production of methanol and dimethyl ether from carbon dioxide hydrogenation has been studied under various reaction conditions. First, the methanol synthesis was compared with the concurrent production method. For the methanol synthesis, the ternary mixed oxide catalyst (CuO/ZnO/Al2O3) was used and for the coproduction of methanol and dimethyl ether, silica-alumina was mixed with the methanol synthesis catalyst to be a hybrid catalyst. The results show that the co-production provides much higher per-pass yield than methanol synthesis even at very short contact time. The effects of temperature, contact time, pressure and catalyst hybrid ratio on the product yields and selectivities were also determined in the co-production.

인삼 석유에테르 추출물이 흰쥐에서 여러 발암성물질에 의해 유도된 소핵생성의 억제효과 (Anticlastogenic Effect of Petroleum Ether Extract of Panax ginseng Against Carcinogens-induced Micronuclei in Mice)

  • Ethanol, total saponin and petroleum ether extract of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer were tested for their anticlastogenic effects against induction of micronuclei by cyclophosphamide and benzo(a)pyrene in mice. Ginseng petroleum ether extract (GPEE) showed the highest suppressive effect among three extracts. GPEE was also tested to compare their anticlastogenic effect against several well-known carcinogens: such as mitomycin C, 7, 12-dimethyl benzo(a)anthracene, ethyl methane sulfonate, dimethylnitrosamine and busulfan. GPEE showed the anticlastogenic effect against most of carcinogens, although there were no significant effects against 7, 12-dimethyl benzo(a) anthracene, dimethyl nitrosoamine and busulfan-induced micronuclei.

  • SAPO-34 촉매상에서 DME(dimethyl ether) 또는 메탄올로부터 경질 올레핀(에틸렌, 프로필렌, 부텐)을 제조하는 반응을 수행하여, 각각의 올레핀들과 CO, $CO_2$와 같은 부 생성물의 수율을 반응온도와 시간의 흐름에 따라 비교해서 관찰하였다. DME 전환반응은 메탄올 전환반응과 비교하여 볼 때 촉매의 비활성화가 급격히 진행되었다. 물을 첨가할 경우, 올레핀의 수율을 증가와 함께 코크 생성에 의한 촉매의 비활성화가 감소하여 촉매의 수명이 길어짐을 확인하였다.

  • The aqueous ethanolic whole plant extract of Rosa arabica was found to contain the new natural dimeric phenolic compound, ellagic acid 3,3'-dimethyl ether $4-O-{\alpha}-rhamnopyranoside$, 9, along with ten known phenolic metabolites (1-8, 10 and 11). Structures of all compounds (1-11) were established by routine methods of analysis and confirmed by FAB-MS, $^1H\;and\;^{13}C$ NMR spectral analysis.

Cirsiumaldehyde from Gastrodia elata

  • In the course of continous work on tubers of Gastrodia elata, a new constituent was isolated from the ethyl acetate soluble fraction prepared from the methanol extract. The structure of the compound was identified as ${\alpha},{\alpha}'-[bis-2-(5-carboxaldehydo)furanyl]-dimethyl$ ether from the elemental analytical and spectroscopic data. This compound was once isolated from Cirsium chlorolepis and named as cirsiumaldehyde. This is the first furan type compound isolated from Gastrodia elata.
