  • The accurate error size and discrimination region in the perception of depth amount from 3-dimensional images by the human visual system will be the basic data for the utilization and application of the binocular 3- eimensional image system. This paper is focused on studying the accuracy of the depth amount perceived from 3- dimensional images by the human visual system. From the performed experiment, the following results have been obtained: (1) The depth amount perceived from the binocular 3- dimensional images has been displayed by a proper scale of distance, and found to be imprecise and also have a large variance. (2) In utilizing the binocular 3-dimensional image system, it seems more appropriate to make the images viewed outward rather than inward from the screen in the regard of error and variance. (3) The binocular 3-dimensional image system can be effectively applied to displaying unreal space, for example, the layout of room in design, from the viewpoint of perception characteristics of depth amount.

  • KOMPSAT-1 was launched on 21 December, 1999 and the main mission of the satellite is the cartography to provide the imagery from a remote earth view for the production of maps of Korean territory. For this purpose, the satellite has capability to tilt the spacecraft utmost $\pm$45 degrees to acquire stereo satellite imagery in different paths. This study aims to estimate the three dimensional positioning accuracy of stereo satellite imagery from EOC(electro-optical camera), a payload of KOMPSAT-1 satellite. For this purpose, the ground control points and check points were obtained by GPS surveying. The sensor modeling and the adjustment was performed by PCI software installed in KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute), which contained mathematical analysis module for KOMPSAT-1 EOC. The study areas were Taejon and Nonsan, placed in the middle part of Korea. As a result of this study, we found that the RMSE(root mean square error) value of three dimensional positioning KOMPST-1 stereo imagery can be less than 1 pixel (6.6 m) if we can use about 10 GCPs(ground control points). Then, a standarrd of FGDC (Federal Geographic Data Committee) of USA was applied to the result to estimate the three dimensional positioning accuracy of KOMPSAT-1 stereo imagery.

  • Orthognathic surgery is designed to correct problems of the jaw and face and restore facial harmony. The limitations of orthognathic surgery occur at all steps of the surgical workflow: preoperative planning, simulation, and operation. Many studies have shown the accuracy and advantages of 3 dimensional computer-assisted program for orthognathic surgery. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the accuracy of the maxillary repositioning in patients who underwent orthognathic surgery using a 3 dimensional computer assisted surgery program. The reliability of computer guided orthognathic surgery using splint and surgical guide need to be improved further. The 3 dimensional computer assisted analysis seems to be more precise to interpret than two-dimensional analysis. High-precision planning of orthognathic surgery has predictable results. Three-dimensional computer assisted orthognathic surgery has the following advantages : planned surgical movement is possible, splints guide with CAD/CAM technology; and increase predictable results .Computer assisted simulation surgery ensures accuracy during surgery, thereby facilitating predictable results. It may provide solution that enables surgeon to perform planned surgery more accurately.

  • The study on computation time, accuracy, and convergency characteristic of the implicit finite difference method is presented with the variation of the space increment and time step in a two-dimensional transient heat conduction problem with a dirichlet boundary condition. Numerical analysis were conducted by the model having the conditions of the solution domain from 0 to 3m, thermal diffusivity of 1.26 $m^2/h$, initial condition of 272 K, and boundary condition of 255.4 K. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) The degree of influence with respect to the accuracy of the time step and space increment in the alternating-direction implicit method and Crank-Nicholson implicit method were relatively small, but in case of the fully implicit method showed opposite tendency. 2) To prescribe near the zero for the space increment and tine step in a two dimensional transient problem were good in a accuracy aspect but unreasonable in a computational time aspect. 3) The reasonable condition of the space increment and the time step considering accuracy and computation time could be generalized with the Fourier modulus increment, F, ana dimensionless space increment, X, irrespective of the solution domain.

  • Manufacturing process for milli components has recently gained researcher's focus with the increasing tendency toward highly integrated and micro-scaled parts for electronic devices. The milli-components need more precise manufacturing process than the conventional manufacturing process since the parts require higher dimensional accuracy than the conventional ones. In order to enhance the forming accuracy and productivity, various forming procedures proposed and studied by many researchers. In this paper, forming analysis of milli-components has been studied with a new micro-former. In modeling of progressive dies, multi-stage forming sequence has been analyzed with finite element analysis by LS-DYNA3D. The analysis proposes the sequential die and part shapes with the corresponding punch force and dimensional accuracy. The analysis also considers the effect of elastic dies on the dimensional accuracy of the formed parts. The analysis result demonstrates that the elastic analysis in the milli-forming process is indispensable for accurate forming analysis. The analysis procedure in the paper will provide good information in design of a new micro-former and milli-component

  • Dimensional accuracy and surface quality are very important in rapid prototyping especially when the models are used for the production of tools. This paper presents the development of benchmarking part to investigate dimensional accuracy and surface finish. A new test part is designed to perform benchmarking of major rapid prototyping processes such as selective laser sintering, laminated object manufacturing, stereolithography apparatus, and fused deposition modeling. The test part design includes basic manufacturing features such as holes, walls, squares, cylinder and etc. In addition, the small features are included in order to evaluate the fine details that can be manufactured by a specific RP process. The CMM program that automatically measures different features in the test part is also developed. The evaluation of accuracy as well as surface roughness are discussed for major rapid prototyping processes.

  • The machining accuracy of CNC machine tools will decrease the production lead time because the coordinate compensation of the tool path will be unnecessary to meet design specifications. Improving the accuracy of machined parts enhances the reliability and functionality of the assembly as well as the life of the product. Among various factors affecting the accuracy of machined parts, the ambient temperature is the major factor that refers to the temperature surrounding the machine and workpiece. In this study, an experiment was conducted to confirm the dimensional variations caused by changes in the ambient temperature. The ambient temperature resulted in overcutting when it increased. A developed pre-processor converts the CNC program to compensate the dimensional variations caused by temperature changes. This methodology can be used to determine the machining accuracy and improve the positioning accuracy of a machine tool.

  • A rear axle spider in an irregular shape, which is used as a part in the braking system of a vehicle like a big truck and a trailer, is subjected to a large torque and hence requires both strength and endurance over the brake heat. This part should be therefore manufactured in dimensional accuracy. The practical manufacturing process of this irregular product requires the heat treatment process after hot forging and then the cold coining process for the dimensional accuracy. At the present study, the warm coning without the heat treatment process was proposed to employ the residual heat due to the hot forging process. And also the trimming and piercing process was designed using the rigid-plastic finite element method. The mechanical properties were discussed and also commented upon.
