From Paris and Shanghai to Singapore: A Multidisciplinary Study in Evaluating the Provenance and Dating of Two of Liu Kang's Paintings

  • This paper focuses on the dating and provenance of two paintings, Climbing the hill and View from St. John's Fort by the prominent Singaporean artist Liu Kang (1911-2004). Climbing the hill, from the National Gallery Singapore collection, was believed to have been created in 1937, based on the date painted by the artist. However, a non-invasive examination unveiled evidence of an underlying paint scheme and a mysterious date, 1948 or 1949. These findings prompted a comprehensive technical study of the artwork in conjunction with comparative analyses of View from St. John's Fort (1948), from the Liu family collection. The latter artwork is considered to be depicting the same subject matter. The investigation was carried out with UVF, NIR, IRFC, XRR, digital microscopy, PLM and SEM-EDS to elucidate the materials and technique of both artworks and find characteristic patterns that could indicate a relationship between both paintings and assist in correctly dating Climbing the hill. The technical analyses were supplemented with the historical information derived from the Liu family archives. The results showed that Climbing the hill was created in 1948 or 1949 on top of an earlier composition painted in Shanghai between 1933 and 1937. As for the companion View from St. John's Fort from 1948, the artist reused an earlier painting created in France in 1931. The analytical methods suggested that Liu Kang used almost identical pigment mixtures for creating new artworks. However, their painting technique demonstrates some differences. Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of Liu Kang's painting materials and his working practice.

  • Since the onset of the 21st century, digital technology has been widely adopted in various fields of art; it has enabled artists or designers to try diverse and brand-new ways of expression in literally every possible field of art, including painting, sculpture, and other design work. Furniture design is no exception. From the initial design step to the final production of furniture, modern digital skills are broadly utilized, creating a whole new set of designs that would otherwise be hardly conceivable and realizing a highly efficient furniture-making mechanism. More recently, the 3D printing technique, which is called a 21st century alchemy, has been successfully commercialized and is getting more popular, heralding yet another innovative shift in the area of furniture design and production. In this context, this study discusses the background of the furniture design using digital technology, and identifies the correlations between the modern digital technology and furniture design by redefining the concept of such digital technology. By reviewing multiple real-life cases, some of the key digital expressions found in modern furniture design are also analyzed. This study aims at suggesting the reason why digital technology is significant and promising in diverse ways for the development of modern furniture design.

  • 중국 수묵 애니메이션의 확대 발전을 위해서는 수묵 애니메이션의 퀄리티와 양적인 확대가 필요하다. 이를 위해 수묵화 이미지를 이용해 수묵 애니메이션 구현을 최적화하는 방법으로 애니메이션 장르를 다양화해 양적인 문제를 해결하는 방법을 찾으려 했다. 기술이 발달함에 따라 가상현실 콘텐츠로의 수묵 애니메이션 제작에 필요한 적용 방법을 기 제작된 수묵 애니메이션을 바탕으로 VR 확대 연구를 진행해 보았다.

  • This study shows that digital technology is adapted practical method in fashion design process and virtual simulation and cyber fashion gallery based on virtual reality are researched. This study is proposed the 3D fashion design simulation in the virtual space used on 3D studio max, poser, photoshop program according to fashion design process. The main design concept is "temporary bridge" from rainbow. This study is supposed six fashion design in accordance with three sub-theme under main concept by changing color and texture used on 3D simulation. The results of this study are as follows: 1. This study produced Cyber Fashion Gallery in virtual space to the form of CD Rom title and web title by Macromedia Director 8.5, Macromedia Flash, Sound Forge. And it is enlarged the field of expression in aspect of Fashion Exhibition, beyond restriction of time and space. 2. Clothes modelling tools is able to easily adapt to various textiles and patterns in 3D dynamic virtual mannequin before making clothes. Digital technology is able to express image changed color and texture, especially new material, multi-finishing material and brilliant material and so on. So this study is able to develop tools for study of fashion coordination. 3. Cyber Fashion Gallery consists of gallery, story, painting, symbolism, example, image, quit. This study is enlarged the range of clothing expression by digital technology and open to possibility customized-manufacture.

장곡사 미륵불 괘불탱의 채색 재료 분석을 위한 휴대용 라만 분광기의 적용성 연구 (Application of Handheld Raman Spectroscopy for Pigment Identification of a Hanging Painting at Janggoksa Temple(Maitreya Buddha))

  • 본 연구는 대형불화 현장 조사에 비파괴 조사장비 중 하나인 휴대용 라만 분광기를 적용하고 그 결과를 HH-XRF 데이터와 상호 비교하여 장곡사 미륵불 괘불탱에 사용된 채색 재료를 동정하였다. 대형불화에 사용된 채색 재료 분석시, 현장에서 주로 휴대용 현미경과 HH-XRF를 이용한다. 하지만 채색 재료가 경원소로 구성되어 있거나 여러 안료가 중첩 또는 혼합 채색된 경우, 비파괴 분석 데이터만으로는 해석에 한계가 있다. 또한 문화유산이라는 특성상 수습할 수 있는 시료의 양은 제한적이어서 XRD, SEM-EDS 및 라만 분광을 이용한 정밀 분석을 수행하는데 어려움이 있다. 따라서 현장 조사 시 HH-XRF 분석 데이터를 보완할 분석기술이 필요하다. 장곡사 미륵불 괘불탱을 대상으로 백색, 적색, 황색, 녹색, 청색 색상별 채색 재료에 대하여 HH-XRF로 성분을 분석하고 휴대용 라만 분광기를 적용하여 분자구조를 확인하였다. 분석결과, 백색은 연백, 적색은 진사, 석간주, 황색은 등황, 석황, 녹색은 염화동, 청색은 쪽이 사용된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 휴대용 라만 분광기를 적용함으로써 데이터에 대한 교차검증뿐 아니라 HH-XRF로 확인이 어려웠던 혼합 채색된 안료에 대한 식별과 유기안료에 대한 정보를 획득하는데 도움이 되었다. 또한 대형불화 등 회화문화유산의 비파괴 현장 조사에 휴대용 라만이 다양하게 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

  • 우리는 현재 디지털이라는 테크놀로지를 앞세운 디지털미디어시대를 살아가고 있다. 디지털 테크놀로지의 '탈물질성'을 바탕으로 미디어에 기반하는 인간의 감각은 그 어느 때 보다도 강력하게 확장되어 있고, 그 영향력은 모든 분야에 예외가 없다. 아날로그 사진의 출현 이후 미디어의 존재가 심각하게 회화의 정체성과 가치에 의문을 던졌지만, 디지털 사진의 출현은 그보다 더 본질적인 새로운 패러다임과 가치 창조의 바람을 일으키고 있다. 화학적 프로세스를 거치는 과거 아날로그 사진과는 다르게 디지털 사진의 실체는 0과 1로 대변되는 디지털 프로세스를 거치게 된다. 이는 원본의 손실 없는, 오히려 후보정을 통해 원본을 뛰어넘는 복사본을 창조 가능하게 함으로써 원본이라는 전통적 가치를 소멸시켜 버렸다. 이처럼 디지털 사진이미지는 아날로그 사진과는 본질적으로 다른 구조와 속성을 지니고 있기 때문에, 아날로그 사진과는 차별되는 미학과 존재가치를 지니고 있으며, 이에 따른 감각의 확장 역시 유래 없는 가능성을 보여주고 있다.

The Digital Mock-Up Information System for New Car Development

  • Since Chrysler Motor Co. had experienced the digital development system in the beginning of 1990's, most of leading automobile companies are trying to apply a digital information system for their own business process reengineering based upon concurrent engineering system from product planning phase. This is called as virtual DMU(Digital Mock-Up) system instead of the traditional PMU(Physical Mock-Up) system. By using the virtual prototype, all of the design requirements and system specifications can be checked, changed and optimized more quickly and more efficiently. This paper consists of five chapters for the DMU information system. In the 1$^{st}$ chapter, the principle of digital design system is suggested by using four basic modules such as product design module, process design module, manufacturing system design module and central control module. The basic scheme of DMU is introduced with the benefits of application in the chapter 2. In the chapter 3, a digital design process of new car development is explained with the detailed DMU design and design review processes. In the chapter 4, the practical DMU manufacturing techniques and applications are introduced as CAD/CAM analyses, DPA(Digital Pre-Assembly)reviews for development, production, operation and maintenance phases, digital tolerance analyses and digital factory analyses for assembling line simulation, automated robot welding processes, production jig & fixtures and painting process simulation. Finally, the activities of digital design support; CAS-styling, CAE-engineering and CAT-testing are summarized for design optimization in the chapter 5. As today's automobile manufactures and related business organizations are struggling to compete in the global marketplace, they are concentrating on efficient use of DMU information system to reduce the new car development cost, to have shorten the delivery schedule and to improve product design quality. To meet the demand of those automobile industries on digital information systems, the CALS(Computer aided Acquisition and Logistics Support) and EC(Electronic Commerce)initiative has been focused as a dominant philosophy in defense & commercial industries, specially automobile industries.s.

영상미디어에서 매치 컷을 통한 시·공간 표현 연구 -영화<드라큘라>(1992)를 중심으로- (A study on the expression of space and time by match cut in the image media -focusing on the movie, Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)-)

  • 매치 컷(Match cut)은 영상미디어에서 활발히 사용되는 몽타주(montage) 기법이다. 이 기법은 활용의 범위가 넓고, 수용자에게 다양한 의미작용을 일으키는 기법이기도 하다. 본고에서는 쇼트와 쇼트 사이에 발생되는 의미작용에 바탕을 두고, 매치 컷 활용이 다양하게 표현되는 영화 <드라큘라>을 분석하였다. 매치 컷을 통한 오브젝트들의 결합방법과 도출되는 표현은 본문에서 살펴보았듯이 결합의 방법에 따라 발생되는 표현효과가 다르게 나타났고, 그 활용의 정도는 한정적이 않음을 알 수 있었다. 본고는 영화<드라큘라>에서 드러나는 매치 컷의 활용방법을 분석하고, 그 쓰임과 표현에 있어 매치 컷 표현의 역량을 제시하고자 하였다. 또, 앞의 과정에서 발생되는 생성역량을 중심으로 질 들뢰즈(Gilles Deleuze)의 철학적 쟁점에 바탕을 두었다. 그리고 이해를 돕기 위해 비슷한 의미작용이 드러나는 프란시스 베이컨(Francis Bacon)의 회화 작품 <회화(painting)>(1946)와 <자화상(self-portrait)>(1969)과 비교분석하였다. 이 두 미디어를 분석함으로써 쇼트와 쇼트사이에 유목(nomadism)적 방법으로 '오브젝트와 오브젝트', '색과 색'등을 통해, 결합 생성으로 발생되는 '되기(becoming)'의 의미작용이 다양하게 적용될 수 있음을 알았다.

반 두즈버그의 시.공간 표현형식 (An Expression Method of Space-Time in Van Doesburg's works)

  • Van Doesburg founded the magazine De Stijl with Mondrian in 1917. De Stijl movement was influenced by Cubist painting as well as by the mysticism and the ideas about ideal geometric forms in the neoplatonic philosophy. De Stijl proposed ultimate simplicity and abstraction by using only straight horizontal and vertical lines and rectangular forms. Furthermore, their formal vocabulary was limited to the primary colours, red, yellow, and blue, and the three primary values, black, white, and grey. The works avoided symmetry and attained aesthetic balance by the use of opposition. Vertical and horizontal lines are positioned in layers or planes that do not intersect, thereby allowing each element to exist independently and unobstructed by other elements In 1924 their different concepts about space and time were split between Van Doesburg and Mondrian. Van Doesburg launched a new concept for his art, Elementarism, which was characterized by the diagonal lines and rivaled with Mondrian's Neo-Plasticism. The works of De Stijl would influence the Bauhaus style and the international style of architecture.

  • There are many problems in present truss-deck slab system for example welding defect, segregation, water leakage, rust and tarnish etc. These problems may be caused by spot welding thin galvanized steel plate and lattice bar. The TOX Joining Systems is to join metal sheets of different material and thickness with and without coating or painting without adding heat or a joining part. Newly developed TOX-deck slab system using non-welding joint is free from above mentioned problems. The objects of this study are suggestion of design strength of TOX joint by experimental and statistical analyses and development of window based program to design the TOX-deck slab system.
