  • The basic elements in precise geoid determination are the gravity and topographic data with reliable quality and distribution. In this study, the effect of the gravity and topographic data on the precision of the geoid are analyzed through simulations in which the quality and distribution of the data are artificially controlled. It was found that the distribution of the topographic data has more effect on the precision of geoid than the quality of the it. This leads to the conclusion that the SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) DTM (Digital Terrain Model) with resolution of 90m is qualified as a topographic data in geoid determination. In the experiments with gravity data, on the other hand, the aliasing effect caused by the low data density caused large errors in geoid. It was found that the more gravity data especially in north-eastern mountainous area is needed for precise geoid determination in Korea.

  • In this paper, we propose the low sldelobe digital doppler filter bank design algorithm which is practically applicable to coherent radar equipment in complex air-defense system. Using the proposed algorithm, we can obtain a digital doppler filter bank of lower peak sidelobe level and higher clutter suppression capability. In this method, it is possible to achieve higher target-detectability without loss of Target SNR. The proposed algorithms are verified by simulations and experiments.

  • In this paper, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) clutter images are simulated based on the extensive analyses for radar backscatter characteristics of various earth surfaces, and the simulated images are compared with measured SAR images. At first, the surface parameters including soil moisture content and surface roughness parameters and other parameters for vegetation canopies are measured for various surfaces. The backscattering coefficients for the surfaces are computed using theoretical and empirical models for surface scattering and the radiative transfer for vegetation-canopy scattering. Then, the digital elevation map (DEM) and land cover map (LCM) are used for the SAR image generation. The SAR impulse response (correlation function) is also employed to simulated reliable SAR images. Finally, the appropriate speckle and texture parameters for various earth surfaces are used for generating the SAR clutter images.

  • The typhoon Rusa passed through the Korean peninsula from the west-southern part to the east-northern part in the summer season of 2002. The flash flood due to the Rusa was occurred over the Korean peninsula and especially the damage was concentrated in Kangnung, Yangyang, Kosung, and Jeongsun areas of Kangwon-Do. Since the latter half of the 1990s the flash flood has became one of the frequently occurred natural disasters in Korea. Flash floods are a significant threat to lives and properties. The government has prepared against the flood disaster with the structural and nonstructural measures such as dams, levees, and flood forecasting systems. However, since the flood forecasting system requires the rainfall observations as the input data of a rainfall-runoff model, it is not a realistic system for the flash flood which is occurred in the small basins with the short travel time of flood flow. Therefore, the flash flood forecasting system should be constructed for providing the realistic alternative plan for the flash flood. To do so, firstly, Flash Flood Monitoring and Prediction (FFMP) Model must be developed suitable to Korea terrain. In this paper, We develop the FFMP model which is based on GIS, Radar techniques and hydro-geomorphologic approaches. We call it the F2MAP model. F2MAP model has three main components (1) radar rainfall estimation module for the Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts (QPF), (2) GIS Module for the Digital terrain analysis, called TOPAZ(Topographic PArametiZation), (3) hydrological module for the estimation of threshold runoff and Flash Flood Guidance(FFG). For the performance test of the model developed in this paper, F2MAP model applied to the Kangwon-Do, Korea, where had a severe damage by the Typhoon Rusa in August, 2002. The result shown that F2MAP model is suitable for the monitoring and the prediction of flash flood.

  • In order to satisfy several conditions with respect to size, weight, and costs, automotive radars use an antenna consisting of a small number of receiving channels. If RELAX technique is applied to the automotive radars, angles of targets located in antenna beam can be estimated as well as the number of the targets. However, a small number of receiving channels in the antenna leads to inaccurate spectral estimation in angle domain, which in turn degrades performance of RELAX technique. Therefore, in this study, root-MUSIC technique coupled with MDL criterion is introduced to decide accurate angles of targets in antenna beam. In simulations, we show superior performance of proposed scheme using simulation results when three point targets are located in antenna beam.

  • In this paper, we proposed airborne target recognition using multi-channel combining method in DTV-based passive radar. By combining multi-channel signals, we obtained the HRRP with sufficient range resolution. HRRP was obtained by AR method or zero-padding. From the obtained HRRP, we extracted scattering centers by CLEAN algorithm using the gradient descent. We extracted feature vectors and performed target recognition after training neural network using the extracted feature vectors. To verify performance of proposed methods, we assumed frequency bands of three broadcasting transmitters operated in Korea(Mt. Gwan-ak, Mt. Yong-moon, Kyeon-wol-ak) and used full scale 3D CAD model of four targets. Also we compared the target recognition performance of the proposed method with that of using only single-channel of three broadcasting transmitters. As a result, proposed methods showed better performance than using only single-channel at three broadcasting transmitters.

  • Biogenic surface films, which are often present in coastal areas, may enhance the signatures of hydrodynamic processes in microwave, optical, and infrared imagery. We analyzed ERS-1/2 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) images taken over the Japan/East Sea (JES). We focused on the appearance of the contrast SAR signatures, particularly the dark features of different scales caused by various oceanic and atmospheric phenomena. Spiral eddies of different scales were detected through surface film patterns both near the coast and in the open regions of the JES in warm and cold seasons. During field experiments carried out at the Pacific Oceanological Institute (POI) Marine Station 'Cape Shults' in Peter the Great Bay, the sea surface roughness characteristics were measured during the day and night using a developed polarization spectrophotometer and various digital cameras and systems of floats. The velocity of natural and artificial slicks was estimated using video and ADCP time series of tracers deployed on the sea surface. The slopes of gravity-capillary wave power spectra varied between .4 and .5. Surface currents in the natural and artificial slicks increased with the distance from the coast, varying between 4 and 40 cm/s. The contrast of biogenic and anthropogenic slicks detected on vertical and horizontal polarization images against the background varied over a wide range. SAR images and ancillary satellite and field data were processed and analyzed using specialized GIS for marine coastal areas.

  • In this paper, we describe the designed digital waveform of a linear frequency-modulated (FM) chirp signal using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for image radar, and this signal is modulated with an I-Q modulator, and multiplied by 24 frequency multipliers to obtain a 94-GHz W-band wideband chirp generator. The developed chirp generator is an FM signal with a 94-GHz carrier frequency and a 960-MHz bandwidth, and the flatness is less than 1.0 dB at intermediate frequency (IF) (3.9 GHz), 2.0 dB in the W-band, and it has a 0.3-W output power in the W-band.

  • To extract the 3D geometric information from SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) images, two different techniques, interferometric SAR and radargrammetry, have been widely used. InSAR is most widely used for the generation of precise DEM(Digital Elevation Model) until now. But, Interferometric SAR requires severe temporal correlation over areas covered with vegetation and high relief areas. Because radargrammetry is less sensible to temporal correlation, it can provide better results than interferometric SAR in certain, especially X-band SAR. In this paper, we assess the properties of DEMs generated by radargrammetry using stereo C-band RADARSAT-1 images and X-band TerraSAR-X images.

  • This paper proposes a core technology for a micro river monitoring terminal device suitable for flood monitoring in small rivers and valleys. Our proposed device is basically equipped with a 77GHz radar, gyro and accelerometer sensors. To measure the flow velocity and water level, we proposed a signal processing technique that extracts pure water energy components from the observed Doppler velocity and reflection intensity from the radar. And to determine the stability of the river structure equipped with our device, we constantly monitor the displacement of the measured values of the gyro and accelerometer sensors. Experimental result verified that our method detects pure water energy in various river environments and distinguishes between flow velocity and water level well. And we verified that vibration and position change of structures can be determined through a gyro sensor. In future research, we will work to build a secure digital twin river network by lowering the cost of supplying RF-WAV devices. Also we expect our device to contribute to securing a preventive golden time in rivers.
