  • The combination of ultrasound echo images with digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) methods has resulted in a two-dimensional, two-component velocity field measurement technique appropriate for opaque flow conditions including blood flow in clinical applications. Advanced PIV processing algorithms including an iterative scheme and window offsetting were used to increase spatial resolution. The optimum concentration of the ultrasound contrast agent used for seeding was explored. Velocity validation tests in fully developed laminar pipe flow result of echo PIV showed good agreement with both optical PIV measurements and the known analytic solution based on a volume flow measurement.

  • Three-dimensional vortex structures in the corner region of translating normal plates are visualized experimentally with defocusing digital particle image velocimetry. Vortex formation processes for three plates with corner angle $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, and $120^{\circ}$ are compared in order to study the effect of corner shape on vortex formation. In all cases, the self-induction of the starting vortex and its interaction with the potential flow induced by the moving plate cause the vortex to change its form dynamically after the plate starts to translate. While the vortex near a corner follows the plate in the low corner angle of $60^{\circ}$, the vortex separates early from the plate and its forward motion becomes slow in the high corner angle of $120^{\circ}$. It is also found that the starting vortex can transport inward at the corner, which depends on the corner angle.

  • As a carrier of malaria and sneak of blood, mosquitoes are an unpleasant insect. However, there are several unknown natural secretes related with mosquitoes. Among them, we focused on the blood sucking process of a female mosquito. The main objective of this study is to understand the mosquito's blood sucking mechanism that can be used to resolve the problem encountered in the injection or transport of infinitesimal biological fluids in a micro-chip. At first, the velocity fields of blood-sucking flow in a proboscis were measured using a micro-particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The velocity signals of flow in the proboscis show periodic variation. This seems to be resulted from the beating of the pharyngeal pump which works as driving power. To analyze the pumping mechanism, the temporal variation of the pharyngeal pump was visualized using the synchrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique. The volume variation was estimated by the help of digital image processing techniques. Once the main mechanism of blood sucking process was found, a effective micro-pumping system with high efficiency would be developed in near future.

  • We investigated experimentally the properties of dust explosion through lycopodium particle clouds in a duct to provide the fundamental knowledge. Propagating dust flames in the vertical duct of 120 cm height and 12 cm square cross-section were observed by digital video camera and flame front is visualized using by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) system. As the result, when the same average dust concentration existed in the vertical duct, downward flame propagation was faster than the upward flame propagation, its rate increased with dust concentration in 300g/$m^3$. Post flames were caused by the ignition of unburned particles which flowed into the rear region of flame from passage between flame and duct wall, and they generated regardless of duct condition. Also, it was found that appearance frequency of post flames during dust flame propagations increased with the increase of dust concentration.

  • Stereoscopic particle image velocimetry is a measurement technique to acquire three dimensional velocity field by two cameras. With a laser sheet illumination, the third velocity component can be deduced from out-of$.$plane velocity components using a stereoscopic matching method. Most industrial fluid flows are three dimensional turbulent flows, so it is necessary to use the stereoscopic PIV measurement method. However the existing stereoscopic PIV system seems hard to use since it is very expensive and complex. In this study we have developed a Miniature Stereo-PIV(MSPIV) system based on the concept of the Miniature PIV system which we have already developed. In this paper, we address the design and some primitive experimental results of the Miniature Stereo-PIV system. The Miniature Stereo-PIV system features relatively modest performances, but is considerably smaller, cheaper and easy to handle. The proposed Miniature Stereo-PIV system uses two one-chip-only CMOS cameras with digital output. Only two other chips are needed, one for a buffer memory and one for an interfacing logic that controls the system. Images are transferred to a personal computer (PC) via its standard parallel port. No extra hardware is required (in particular, no frame grabber board is needed).

  • This study is aimed to design the mechanical gascyclone precipitator with an outstanding collection efficiency as one of ways to reduce exhaust gas of small-scale vessels. It estimated fine particles generated from diesel engines which has become one of the biggest environmental issues currently. Specifically, it quantitatively analyzed the flowing process from the cyclone gas exit; a duct via part to the collecting part of Cylindrical lower using DPIV (Digital Particle Image Velocimetry). Since the gas inlet height part became wider the previous theoretical dimensions, internal fluid characteristics of cyclone where the speed of internal swirl had been slow were investigated by temporary streamline of fine particles at $14-20{\mu}m$. The results showed that collecting efficiency was three times higher than the conical type utilized previously. In addition, this study supplemented imprecision problems from the previous theoretical equation and CFD interpretation with an experimental method. It also provided a basic data to design the cyclone precipitator by size of diesel engines for vessels.

  • The curvature of wound boundaries has been identified as a key modulator that determines a type of force responsible for cell migration. While several studies report how certain curvatures of the boundary correlate with the rate at which the wound closes, it remains unclear how these curvatures are spatiotemporally formed to regulate the healing process. We investigated the dynamic changes in the boundary curvatures by visualizing cell migration patterns. Locally, cells at the convex boundary continuously move forward with transmitting kinetic responses behind to the cells away from the boundary, and cells at the concave boundary exhibit dramatic contracting motion, like a purse-string, when they accumulate enough negative curvatures to gain the thrust toward the void. Globally, the dynamics of boundary geometries are controlled by the diffusive flow of cells driven by the density gradient between the wound area and the cell layer.

  • The objective of this study is to analyse the spray characteristics according to the injection duration under the ambient pressure condition, and the injection timing in the visualization engine. In order to investigate the spray behavior, we obtained the spray velocity using the PIV method that has been an useful optical diagnostics technology, and calculated the vorticity from spray velocity component. These results elucidated the relationship between vorticity and entropy which play an important role in the diffusion process for the early injection case and the stratification process for the late injection case. In addition, we quantified the homogeneous diffusion rate of spray using the entropy analysis based on the Boltzmann's statistical thermodynamics. Using these method, it was found that the concentration of spray droplets caused by the increase of injection duration is more effective than the increase of momentum dissipation. We also found that the homogeneous diffusion rate increased as the injection timing moved to the early intake stroke process and BTDC $50^{\circ}$ was the most efficient injection timing for the stratified mixture formation during the compression stroke.

  • A two-color particle image velocimetry (PIV) has been developed for measuring two dimensional velocity flowfields and applied to a Mach 2.0 supersonic nozzle. This technique is similar to a single-color PIV technique except that two different color laser beams are used to solve the directional ambiguity problem. A green-color laser sheet (532 nm: 2nd harmonic beam of YAG laser) and a red-color laser sheet (619 nm: output beam from YAG pumped Dye laser using Rhodamine 640) are employed to illuminate the seeded particles. A high resolution (3060${\times}$2036) digital color CCD camera is used to record the particle positions. This system eliminates the photographic-film processing time and subsequent digitization time as well as the complexities associated with conventional image shifting techniques for solving directional ambiguity problem. The two-color PIV also has the advantage that velocity distributions in high speed flowfields can be measured simply and accurately by varying the time interval between two different laser beams due to its high signal-to-noise ratio and thereby less requirement of panicle pair numbers for a velocity vector in one interrogation spot. The velocity distribution in the Mach 2.0 supersonic nozzle has been measured and the over-expanded shock cell structure can be predicted by the strain rate field. These results are compared and analyzed with the schlieren photograph for the velocity distributions and shock location.

  • In order to analyze the effect of burial depth on the generation of ground cavities and cave-ins, a series of model experiments with different height of model ground were performed. Digital images of the model ground were captured to evaluate the internal deformation of the model grounds by adopting the PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. Additionally, the vertical displacement at the surface, the size of the cavity, and the weight of the discharged soil were measured in each test. The results indicate that the model ground with low burial depth, which does not satisfy the criterion, was more vulnerable to ground cavities and cave-ins than the model ground with high burial depth.
