  • The birth of a new mobile medium of communication In 2005, the DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting), was celebrated for the mobile and asynchronous personal medium. But now, the most film- & video-channels of this epoch-making medium of communication combine with the rebroadcasting of long play film for cinema oder TV series. The purpose of this study is thus to point out the disharmony between new mobile medium and the old, recycled contents and to propose as an alternative content the digital shortshort moving images.

An effective error resilience coding of MPEG-4 video stream using DMB system (DMB를 통한 MPEG-4 비디오 스트림의 효율적인 오류 내성부호화 방안)

  • Terrestrial DMB(Digital Multimedia Broad-casting) system that is now under standardization in Korea offers multimedia broadcasting services at mobile environment and is based on Eureka-147 DAB(Digital Audio Broadcasting) for transmission method. Also DMB provides the error protection method of convolution coding. In this paper, we study on the effective error resilience coding of MPEG-4 video stream over DMB system. In our algorithm, the first, we partition the MPEG-4 data using the MPEG-4 data partitioning method, and then controls the convolution coding rate according to the importance of the partitioned data. From our simulation result, we show that our algorithm is proper for terrestrial DMB services.

  • Traffic information is considered as one of the core contents of the terrestrial DMB. This paper proposes and implements the data broadcasting system, which automatically collects data and transmits the contents in order to provide traffic information promptly The proposed data broadcasting system comprises the following three subsystems: 1 he traffic information integration system for collecting and processing data in real-time, the traffic information authoring system for automatically creating and verifying the contents, and the traffic information transmission system for transmitting the created contents. We describe these subsystems in detail about their functionality, components and interoperability. The proposed data broadcasting system provides the HWS type contents as the PAD data of the terrestrial DMB audio broadcast. Finally, we describe our implementation of the data broadcasting system, and suggest further improvements that need to be made.

  • DS/CDM-QPSK (ITU-R Recommendation BO.1130-4 Annex 6, 'Digital System E'), which has been adoptedas a standard of Korean Satellite DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) system, is a satellite-based multimedia broadcasting service which transmits the multi-channel and high quality contents to the terrestrial users through a satellite or gap-fillers. The broadcast from a satellite is directly received in the plain terrain which are within line-of-sight, but in cities where the broadcast cannot be received directly due to the shadow of buildings, an attempt is being made to install 'Gap-Fillers' to improve the reception in those areas. The gap-fillers, however, may induce interference to service of adjacent band, when their output power is substantially higher compared to the received signal power of signal from a satellite of the adjacent service. In this paper, a link budget analysis is performed, and the optimal EIRP of a gap-filler to maximize the gap-filler coverage, while preventing adjacent band interference is derived.

  • ITU-R B.O. 1130-4 Digital System E adopted for Korean satellite DMB service is a multimedia broadcasting system based on DS-CDM-QPSK technique which broadcasts audio and video contents via the satellite or terrestrial gap-filler. However, Digital System E can not provide full loading services because the multi-channel interference (MCI) is increased due to the loss of orthogonality between signature waveforms in multipath fading channels. In this paper a chip equalizer using tap selection algorithm that enhances the receiving performance is proposed and compared to the conventional rake receiver for the satellite DMB system.

  • In this paper, we propose a blind equalization method for advanced terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (AT-DMB) systems which use hierarchical modulation. The AT-DMB system adopts hierarchical 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) to ensure backward-compatibly with the differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK) signal of the legacy terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) systems and to support higher transmission rate. Due to the hierarchical modulation, the conventional T-DMB signal and the additional signal have different error rate at same signal to noise ratio (SNR). By weighting the decided symbols differently according to the reliability of the symbols, i.e., high priority symbol with low error rate and low priority symbol with high error rate, we can improve the channel estimation accuracy. In this paper, we analyze SNR loss by hierarchical modulation and confirm it through simulations. Moreover, through simulations, we verify that the proposed weighting method improve BER compared to the no-weighting method.

  • The capacity of Satellite DMB(Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) system is limited mainly by the interference. So, to achieve the expected performance of Satellite DMB system and to minimize the interference from other Satellite DMB system, ACI(Adjacent Channel Interference) should be considered carefully. Satellite DMB system uses the Gap-filler for effective transmission in terrestrial environment, and the Gap-filler can use direct amplification or frequency conversion to satisfy the specific requirements. Therefore, amplified signal causes several effects on interference between System A(Eureka 147 DAB) and System E(ISDB : Integrated services Digital Broadcasting). In this paper, by using the outcome of system-level simulation considering the results of link-level simulation, we analyze the interferences between System A and System E under practical situation based on the exact parameters of ITU-R BO. 1130-4. We also propose the appropriate level of guard band and Cell Radius to optimize system capacity by adapting the spectrum mask given in the spec. and utilizing the interference analysis between System A and System E.

  • The Digital Multimedia Broadcasting(DMB) system is developed to offer high quality audio-visual multimedia contents to the uses by the various portable terminals in the mobile environment. Integrated complex reception platform is required to receive multimedia broadcasting services transmitted from various transmission media. In this paper, we present the design and implementation technic for providing the both of terrestrial and satellite DMB services simultaneously using the same hardware platform. The implemented complex receiving terminal to accommodate these DMB services simultaneously need composed of it RF module. it baseband module, it complex control module and the complex de-multiplexer module. The complex control module is designed using uClinux operating system. The complex de-multiplexer, which perform the functions of the address decoder and each DMB stream de-multiplexer, is implemented. with FPGA device. The implemented platform is tested in a real environment and its performance is satisfied with required performance criteria.

  • Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) Multimedia Application Format (MAF) [3] specify how to combine the variety of DMB contents with associated information for a presentation in a well-defined format that facilitates interchange, management, editing, and presentation of the DMB contents. The current metadtata specification for DMB MAF [3] is based on TV-Anytime metadata tools. In this paper, we overview the general application scenarios of DMB MAF and then explore the TV-Anytime metadata tools and usage examples proposed for DMB MAF.

  • DMB(Digital Multimedia Broadcasting)는 유럽의 디지털 오디오 방송규격인 Eureka-147 DAB(Digital Audio Broadcasting) 전송시스템을 기반으로 하여 동영상 및 음성, 문자데이터 등을 포함한 멀티미디어 서비스를 제공하기 위한 새로운 방송표준이다 따라서 DMB 시스템은 Eureka-147 DAB 전송부 이외에 영상 및 음성을 압축하는 미디어압축 (복)부호화부, 압축된 미디어 스트림을 다중화 하는 비디오 (역)다중화부가 추가된 구조를 갖는다. 본 논문은 DMB 표준의 비디오 다중화부의 분석을 통하여 확장된 전송기능 및 높은 전송효율을 제공할 수 있는 새로운 비디오 다중화 구조를 제시한다. 또한 표준 비디오 다중화기와 제안된 비디오 다중화기의 성능평가를 위해 기능적으로 분석하고 시뮬레이션을 통해 전송효율을 측정하였다.
