  • Technological innovations in the 21th Century greatly change the society. The radical advance in computer science brought changes and increased efficiency into society in general. The field of archaeology is also highly influenced and attempts to improve previous manually conducted field survey and research have been actively made. In order to supplement incomplete data set from archaeological excavation, the ways to use computer have been highly explored. GIS is one of them. However, use of GIS has been limited to document locations and to produce distribution map of features using digital map. There are no proper guides to employ GIS for academic research, so that it is hard for beginners to learn how to make use of GIS. In this paper, functions of GIS are introduced even for beginners, including definition of GIS and its archaeological use. It is also explained how to get DEM from digital map to do spatial pattern analysis. Various GIS special pattern analyses using DEM and 3D simulation are presented, as well.

  • The accuracy of digital elevation models (DEMs) is crucial for properly estimating flood inundation area. DEM pixel size is especially important when generating flood inundation maps of small streams with a channel width of less than 50 m. In Korea, DEMs with large spatial resolutions of 30 m have been widely applied to generate flood inundation maps, even for small streams. Additionally, when making river master plans, field observations of stream cross-sections, as well as reference points in the middle of the river, have not previously been used to enhance the DEM. In this study, it was graphically demonstrated that high-resolution DEMs can increase the accuracy of flood inundation mapping, especially for small streams. Also, a methodology was proposed to modify the existing low-resolution DEMs by adding additional survey reference points, including river cross-sections, and interpolating them into a high spatial resolution DEM using the inverse distance weighting method. For verification purposes, the modified DEM was applied to Han stream on Jeju Island. The modified DEM showed much better accuracy when describing morphological features near the stream. Moreover, the flood inundation maps were formulated with the original 30 m pixel DEM and the modified 0.1 m pixel DEM using HEC-RAS modeling of the actual flood event of Typhoon Nari, and then compared with the flood history map of Nari. The results clearly indicated that the modified DEM generated a similar inundation area, but a very poor estimate of inundation area was derived from the original low-resolution DEM.

  • This Paper describes a new program called DEM Generator need to process DEM from LiDAR data or digital map data. It is difficult to generate raster DEM from LiDAR mass point data sets and digital maps too large to fit into memory. The DEM Generator was designed to process DEM and shaded relief image of GeoTiff format in order of streaming meshes; I/O minimize tag, delaunay triangle, natural neighborhood or TIN, temporary files and grid. It is expected that we can be improved the precision of DEM and solved the time consuming problem of DEM generating of a wider area.

  • Recently, the efforts of systematic understanding and utilization of geographic phenomenon for human life as a important factor among activity of mankind are increasing. It is necessary to express topography connected with space. Especially, the technology of geographic analysis using DEM can supply the information rapidly and accurately about elevation and terrain slope of the subject area under the necessity of high 3D quality geographic information. In this study, creating more precise DEM derived from LiDAR data, quantitative analysis on the subject area about elevation and terrain slope is done under comparison with Digital Topographic map Scale 1:1000. LiDAR data is more detailed than Digital Topographic map to express the elevation of the subject area ($39.89{\sim}77.48m$), and terrain slope by analysis using DEM derived from LiDAR data come out minutely about 90%. It can be concluded that the LiDAR data is very applicable and accurate for 3D topographic terrain slope analysis.

  • Satellite remote sensing images have much more information compared to a paper map. But these images are generally handled as particular image format gained from optical sensor, and must be processed and analyzed by computer with high priced digital image processing system. For the extraction of digital elevation model(DEM) from satellite image, we used the overlay image by SPOT-3 of Chuncheon area at the Kangwon province. According to the image condition, the precious geometric correction, the bundle adjustment for ortho-image generation and the stereo image mapping by several technical approaches were processed. So that we developed the methods of automatic DEM extraction and efficient stereo image map generation which can improve the digital image processing steps. Also, we applied the multiple direction birdeye view image for modeling and analysis using the remotely sensed overlay images with high resolution.

  • The KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT)-2 has a capability to provide a cross-track stereo imagery using two different orbits for generating various spatial information. However, in order to fully realize the potential of the KOMPSAT-2 stereo imagery in terms of mapping, various tests are necessary. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possibility of mapping using the KOMPSAT-2 stereo imagery. For this, digital plotting was conducted based on the stereoscopic images. Also the Digital Elevation Model(DEM) and an ortho-image were generated using digital plotting results. An accuracy of digital plotting, DEM, and ortho-image were evaluated by comparing with the existing data. Consequently, we found that horizontal and vertical error of the modeling results based on the Rational Polynomial Coefficient(RPC) was less than 1.5 meters compared with the Global Positioning System(GPS) survey results. The maximum difference of vertical direction between the plotted results in this study and the existing digital map on the scale of 1/5,000 was more than 5 meters according as the topographical characteristics. Although there were some irregular parallax on the images, we realized that it was possible to interpret and plot at least seventy percent of the layer which was required the digital map on the scale of 1/5,000. Also an accuracy of DEM, which was generated based on the digital plotting, was compared with the existing LiDAR DEM. We found that the ortho-images, which were generated using the extracted DEM in this study, sufficiently satisfied with the requirement of the geometric accuracy for an ortho-image map on the scale of 1/5,000.

  • Hydrological characteristics would be utilized to apply such as hydrologic modelling or basin management. This study is to extract hydrological characteristics through DEM and stream network analysis using a hydrologic unit map and digital topographic map in Milyang river basin. OEM and stream network was generated from digital topographic map. Especially stream network was allowed direction, stream order, and topology. As a result of the study, it shows that Milyang river has been changing geologically mature stage into old phase and the landform of Milyang river correspond to Horton-Strahler's law on morphology of stream. This methodology can be applicable to other areas related to hydrological characteristics with vector data.

  • Digital elevation models(DEM) were generated from SPOT-5 HRG supermode imagery through photogrammetric processing. The reference DEMs were obtained from digital topographic maps of 1/5000 scaleas for analyzing the accuracy of the generated DEMs. The DEMs extracted from HRG stereo image data were compared with digital topograpic map DEMs on several test sections. And digital surface models(DSM) and 3D building model was produced.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the three areas that each estimated by using three different river topographic maps. For construction of river topographic maps, the data used in this study are ASTER, SRTM and a 1:5,000 scale digital map data sets in 14 streams of the Cheongdo-gun and Uiseong-gun. HEC-GeoRAS, RAS Mapper, and RiverCAD model are applied for the flooding area analysis using observed data and design rainfalls. The result of analysis is to compare observed flooding area based on the flood plain maps with estimated inundation area by hydraulic models and constructed river topographic maps. The results of this study are as follows; Flooding area by HEC-GeoRAS model is similar to the inundation area of flood plain map and appears in order of RAS Mapper, and RiverCAD model in all watersheds. Flood inundation area by SRTM DEM is similar to the result of 1:5,000 scale digital map in all watersheds and all analysis models. The SRTM DEM shows the most similarity to the digital map than ASTER DEM in all of the watershed scale and analysis models. HEC-GeoRAS and RiverCAD model are efficient models for flood inundation analysis in small watershed and HEC-GeoRAS and Ras Mapper model are efficient in medium to large watershed.
