  • Generally, odorant molecules are detected by olfactory receptors, which are specialized chemoreceptors expressed in olfactory neurons. Besides odorant molecules, certain volatile molecules can be inhaled through the respiratory tract, often leading to pathophysiological changes in the body. These inhaled molecules mediate cellular signaling through the activation of the Ca2+-permeable transient receptor potential (TRP) channels in peripheral tissues. This review provides a comprehensive overview of TRP channels that are involved in the detection and response to volatile molecules, including hazardous substances, anesthetics, plant-derived compounds, and pheromones. The review aims to shed light on the biological mechanisms underlying the sensing of inhaled volatile molecules. Therefore, this review will contribute to a better understanding of the roles of TRP channels in the response to inhaled molecules, providing insights into their implications for human health and disease.

  • Recently, dispersion of damaged forest by pine wilt disease has been regarded as a serious social issue. Damages by pine wilt disease have been spreaded by natural area expansion of the vectors in the damaged area, while the national wide damage spread has induced by human-involved carrying infected trees out of damaged area. In this study, damaged trees were detected and located on the digital map by aerial photograph and terrestrial surveys. The spatial distribution pattern of damaged trees, and the relationship of spatial distribution of damaged trees and some geomorphological factors were geostatistically analysed. Finally, we maked natural spread pattern map of pine wilt disease using geostatistical CART(Classification and Regression Trees) model. This study verified that geostatistical analysis and CART model are useful tools for understanding spatial distribution and natural spread pattern of pine wilt diseases.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an optimal path planning program for autonomous speed sprayer in orchard. A digital map which contained coordinate information and entity information including height, width, radius of main stem, and disease of a trees was developed to build an optimal path. The digital map, dynamic programming and order-picking algorithm were used for planning an optimal path for autonomous speed sprayers. When this algorithm applied to rectangular-shaped orchards to travel whole trees, the developed program planned the same working path and same traveling distance as those of created by conventional method. But for irregular-shaped orchards, developed program planned differently and 5.06% shorter path than conventional method. When applied to create path for multi-selected trees, irregular-shaped orchards showed 13.9% shorter path and also rectangular-shaped orchards showed 9.1% shorter path. The developed program always planned shorter path than the path created by conventional method despite of variation of shape of orchards.

  • Stress induces change to the body functions and causes chronic problems such as worsening a disease. Thus, humans want to evade anxiety and would try any means to reduce stressful situations. Generally, a person would handle their stress by either regulating their emotions or merely coping with the situation, for which the former is most widely used. Our research aims to effectively reduce stress by using the emotional response structure developed by Plutichik and the vitalization method. We extracted the relevant components of the stress-reduction method that would be applicable in any space using digital technologies such as sensors, IoT, and augmented reality. An architect or designer may incorporate these structural components into any structure to effectively reduce people's stress. The research aims to provide a new perspective of architectural space and to show applications of the stress-reducing architectural spaces, which should also fulfill the people's needs. Further research is needed to develop an automatic system to utilize spatial components more effectively.

  • Digital PCR (dPCR) is the third-generation PCR that enables real-time absolute quantification without reference materials. Recently, global diagnosis companies have developed new dPCR equipment. In line with the development, the Lab On An Array (LOAA) dPCR analyzer (Optolane) was launched last year. The LOAA dPCR is a semiconductor chip-based separation PCR type equipment. The LOAA dPCR includes Micro Electro Mechanical System that can be injected by partitioning the target gene into 56 to 20,000 wells. The amount of target gene per wells is digitized to 0 or 1 as the number of well gradually increases to 20,000 wells because its principle follows Poisson distribution, which allows the LOAA dPCR to perform precise absolute quantification. LOAA determined region of interest first prior to dPCR operation. To exclude invalid wells for the quantification, the LOAA dPCR has applied various filtering methods using brightness, slope, baseline, and noise filters. As the coronavirus disease 2019 has now spread around the world, needs for diagnostic equipment of point of care testing (POCT) are increasing. The LOAA dPCR is expected to be suitable for POCT diagnosis due to its compact size and high accuracy. Here, we describe the quantitative principle of the LOAA dPCR and suggest that it can be applied to various fields.

  • The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly changed the Lifeline Program, a telecommunications rate discount program for low-income Americans. As the reliance on online activities such as remote work, distance education, and online shopping grows because of the spread of COVID-19, there is a concern that the digital divide will widen among low-income households that struggle to access internet infrastructure due to the burden of access rates. Accordingly, the US Congress passed a bill to help lower the internet bill for low-income households using the government budget to close the digital divide. The Lifeline Program, which is a part of the universal service obligation, has been in charge of the telecommunications rate discount for low-income households. However, according to the new law, the internet rate discount program based on the government budget was implemented beginning in 2021. As the internet rate discount based on the government budget begins, the US telecommunication rate discount system is transitioning from a system in which telecommunication industry support was borne by operators to one in which public support from the government budget will play a significant role. In this paper, we will look at recent changes in the US telecommunications rate discount program and their implications.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has led many countries around the world to introduce and employ a digital certificate system to prevent infectious diseases, however, there are difficulties in using the compatible digital certificate between countries in that the international standards of the system have not been developed. Accordingly, we propose an improved system, comparing two methods of presenting a certificate, existing QR code-based and a short-range wireless communication-based certificates. The proposed system is a digital certificate system against the spread of infectious disease by storing verification information of the certificate using decentralized identity-based technology on the blockchain. Blockchain-based trust anchor improves security by solving the problem of forgery and alteration of certificates and guaranteeing the identity of certificate issuers and presenters. This system is also expected to enhance usability providing concurrent verification of a number of certificates(vaccination certificates, recovery certificates, test results, identity certificates, etc.) in a single certificate presentation.
