  • This letter presents a crosstalk-enhanced polymer thermo-optic digital optical switch operating at a low power consumption. Modified radiation-type attenuators are integrated in a series with a conventional $1{\times}2$ digital optical switch. A low optical crosstalk of less than -45 dB is attained at a low applied switching power of 60 mW, and an insertion loss of about 1.1 dB is exhibited.

  • This study proposes a method to develop an authoring system(GeoMaTree) for diverse trees that constitute a virtual landscape. The GeoMaTree system enables the simple, intuitive production of an efficient structure, and supports real-time processing. The core of the proposed system is a procedural modeling based on a mathematical model and an application that supports digital content creation on diverse platforms. The procedural modeling allows users to control the complex pattern of branch propagation through an intuitive process. The application is a multi-resolution 3D model that supports appropriate optimization for a tree structure. The application and a compatible function, with commercial tools for supporting the creation of realistic synthetic images and virtual landscapes, are implemented, and the proposed system is applied to a variety of 3D image content.

  • This paper presents a near-optimum blind decision feedback equalizer (DFE) for the receivers of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital television. By adopting a modified trellis decoder (MTD) with a trace- back depth of 1 for the decision device in the DFE, we obtain a hardware-efficient, blind DFE approaching the performance of an optimum DFE which has no error propagation. In the MTD, the absolute distance is used rather than the squared Euclidean distance for the computation of the branch metrics. This results in a reduction of the computational complexity over the original trellis decoding scheme. Compared to the conventional slicer, the MTD shows an outstanding performance improvement in decision error probability and is comparable to the original trellis decoder using the Euclidean distance. Reducing error propagation by use of the MTD in the DFE leads to the improvement of convergence performance in terms of convergence speed and residual error. Simulation results show that the proposed blind DFE performs much better than the blind DFE with the slicer, and the difference is prominent at the trellis decoder following the blind DFE.

  • When covering a skin defect of the finger with a local flap is difficult, a vascular island flap is often used. For a palmar skin defect, it is desirable to add a sensory supply to the flap. This report describes a neurovascular island flap that was used to repair a palmar skin defect, the donor skin coming from the dorsal region of the middle phalanx. This flap is elevated with a vascular pedicle of the palmar digital artery and its dorsal skin branch, including the dorsal digital veins, palmar digital nerve and its cutaneous branches. The advantage of this flap are that it can be transferred with ease and without any tension. No special manipulation is required under a microscope and operation can be performed under a simple nerve-block. There if little possibility that the flap itself undergoes ischemic change or congestion. The disadvantage of this flap are that a skin graft is required at the donor skin site and one palmar digital aretery is lost. We think that this neurovascular island flap is one of the useful methods for skin defects that are difficult to cover with a local flap.

  • Background and Objectives: The integration of auditory-visual speech information improves speech perception; however, if the auditory system input is disrupted due to hearing loss, auditory and visual inputs cannot be fully integrated. Additionally, temporal coincidence of auditory and visual input is a significantly important factor in integrating the input of these two senses. Time delayed acoustic pathway caused by the signal passing through digital signal processing. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of hearing loss and hearing aid digital delay circuit on sound-induced flash illusion. Subjects and Methods: A total of 13 adults with normal hearing, 13 with mild to moderate hearing loss, and 13 with moderate to severe hearing loss were enrolled in this study. Subsequently, the sound-induced flash illusion test was conducted, and the results were analyzed. Results: The results showed that hearing aid digital delay and hearing loss had no detrimental effect on sound-induced flash illusion. Conclusions: Transmission velocity and neural transduction rate of the auditory inputs decreased in patients with hearing loss. Hence, the integrating auditory and visual sensory cannot be combined completely. Although the transmission rate of the auditory sense input was approximately normal when the hearing aid was prescribed. Thus, it can be concluded that the processing delay in the hearing aid circuit is insufficient to disrupt the integration of auditory and visual information.
