  • VIC (Vortex-In-Cell) method for viscous incompressible flow is presented to simulate the wake behind a modified NACA16 foil. With uniform rectangular grid, the velocity in field is calculated using streamfunction from vorticity field by solving the Poisson equation in which FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) is combined with 2nd order finite difference scheme. Here, LES(Large Eddy Simulation) with Smagorinsky model is applied for turbulence calculation. Effective viscosity is formulated using magnitude of strain tensor(or vorticity). Then the turbulent diffusion as well as viscous diffusion becomes particle strength exchange(PSE) with averaged eddy viscosity. The well-established panel method is combined to obtain the irrotational velocity and to apply the no-penetration boundary condition on the body panel. And wall diffusion is used for no-slip condition numerical results of turbulent stresses are compared with experimental results (Bourgoyne, 2003). Before comparing process, LES(Large Eddy Simulation) SGS(Subgrid scale) stress is transformed Reynolds averaged stress (Winckelmans, 2001).

  • The velocity and pressure fields of a ship's propulsion mechanism of the Weis-Fogh type, in which a airfoil moves reciprocally in a channel, are studied in this paper using the advanced vortex method. The airfoil and the channel are approximated by a finite number of source and vortex panels, and the free vortices are introduced from the body surfaces. The viscous diffusion of fluid is represented using the core-spreading model to the discrete vortices. The velocity is calculated on the basis of the generalized Biot-Savart low and the pressure field is calculated from integrating the equation given by the instantaneous velocity and vorticity fields. Two-dimensional unsteady viscose flows of this propulsion mechanism are numerically clarified, and the calculated results agree well with the experimental ones.

  • We solve the integral representation of the Navier-Stokes equations in a lagrangian view by tracking the particles, which have vortex strengths. We simulate the unsteady viscous flow around an impulsively started cylinder using the vortex particle method. Particles are advanced via the Biot-Savart law for a lagrangian evolution of particles. The particle strength is modified based on the scheme of particle strength exchange. The solid boundary satisfies the no-slip boundary condition by the vorticity generation algorithm. We newly modify the diffusion scheme and the boundary condition for simulating an unsteady flow efficiently. To save the computation time, we propose the mixed scheme of particle strength exchange and core expansion. We also use a lot of panels to ignore the curvature of the cylinder, and not to solve the evaluation of the surface density. Results are compared to those from other theoretical and experimental works.

  • A hybrid particle-mesh method based on the vorticity-velocity formulation for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is a combination of the Vortex-In-Cell(VIC) method for convection and the penalization method for diffusion. The key feature of the numerical methods is to determine velocity and vorticity fields around a solid body on a temporary grid, and then the time evolution of the flow is computed by tracing the convection of each vortex element using the Lagrangian approach. Assuming that the vorticity and velocity fields are to be computed in time domain analysis, pressure fields are estimated through a complete set of solutions at present time step. It is possible to obtain vorticity and velocity fields prior to any pressure calculation since the pressure term is eliminated in the vorticity-velocity formulation. Therefore, pressure field is explicitly treated by solving a suitable Poisson equation. In this paper, we propose a simple way to numerically implement the vorticity-velocity-pressure formulation including a penalty term. For validation of the proposed numerical scheme, we illustrate the early development of viscous flows around an impulsive started circular cylinder for Reynolds number of 9500.

  • The transient incompressible flow behind the bluffbody is numerically simulated using the random vortex method(RVM). Based on the vorticity formulation of the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations, the Lagrangian approach with the random walk technique is employed to account for the transport processes of the vortex elements. The random walk procedure for the diffusion process has been validated against the exact solutions. The present simulation focuses on the transition flow regime where the recirculation zone behind the bluffbody becomes highly unsteady and large-scale vortex eddies are shed from the bluffbody wake. The unsteady flow structures and the mixing characteristics behind the bluffbody are discussed in details.

  • The effects of free surface on vortex shedding phenomena around a bluff body were studied by both numerical simulation and flow visualization experiments. A vortex method, which approximates the vorticity field as the sum of discrete vortices; was used for the numerical simulation. Flow visualization experiments were performed in the KRISO cavitation tunnel. Hydrogen bubble was used as illumination material. Free surface elevation was also measured during experiments. The hydrodynamic drag and lift were predicted by numerical simulation. The predicted period of vortex shedding was compared with the results of experiments.

  • The time-development of the wake vortices of the unsteady viscous flow past a semicircular cylinder is simulated using the vortex particle methods for direct numerical simulations(DNS). The early wake behaviour of the flow behind an impulsively started a semicircualr cylinder is evaluated for a range of Reynolds numbers between 60 and 200 with opposite body configurations respectively. The diffusion scheme based on the particle strength exchange(PSE) is used to account far the viscous effect accurately. And the vorticity generation algorithm to enforce the no-slip boundary conditions is employed. In order to redistribute particles efficiently on the distorted Lagrangian grid the particle distribution technique is adaptively revised, while maintaining the uniform resolution. The results of the simulations are compared to other experimental results.

  • An extension of our recently developed locally linear reconstruction scheme to 2 dimensional incompressible flow solver is presented. The solver is based on a semi-implicit fractional step method in which the convective term is discretized by Adams-Bashforth method and the diffusion term by Crank-Nicolson method. Several numerical examples are tested to demonstrate the mesh type independent accuracy of the solver, which include decaying vortex flow, square cavity flow, and flow around a circular cylinder. The above examples are solved on quadrilateral or hybrid meshes. For all numerical examples, we obtained reasonable results.

  • The objective of this study is to analyse the spray characteristics according to the injection duration under ambient pressure condition and to investigate the relationship between vorticity and entropy for controlling diffusion process that is the most important thing during the intake stroke injection process. Therefore, the spray velocity was obtained by using the PIV method that has been an useful optical diagnostics technology, and vorticity calculated from spray velocity component with vorticity algorithm. In addition, the homogeneous diffusion rate of spray was quantified by using the entropy analysis based on the Boltzmann's statistical thermodynamics. From these method, we found that as injection duration increases, spray velocity increases and the location of vortex is moved to the downstream of spray. In the same condition, as the entropy decrease, mean vorticity increases. This means that the concentration of spray droplets caused by the increase of injection duration is more effective than the increase of momentum dissipation.

  • A numerical analysis on three dimensional turbulent incompressible flows through linear cascades of turbine rotor blades with high turning angles has been performed by using a generalized k-.epsilon. model which is a high Reynolds number form and derived by RNG(renormalized group) method to account for the variation of the rate of strain. A second order upwind scheme is used to suppress numerical diffusion in approximating the convective terms. Body-fitted coordinates are adopted to represent the complex blade geometry accurately. For the case without tip clearance, velocity vectors and static pressure contours are shown to be in good agreement with previous experimental results. For the case with tip clearance, the effects of the passage vortex and tip clearance flow on the total pressure loss as well as their interactions are discussed.
