A diffusion process is often the main mechanism of soil gas/vapor movement in the vadose zone. The diffusion coefficients in the porous soil media are different from those in the free air phase by the reduction of available area for diffusion, tortuous diffusion path and variable cross section area along the diffusion path. To take account those effects of the diffusion process in the porous media, usually the terms of effective diffusion coefficient and tortuosity are have been used. However, as there are many differents definitions for the tortuosity, when the term of tortuosity is used, it is necessary to examine it throughly. Moreover, there are many different equations for the effective diffusion coefficient according to the investigators and the differences in the values of effective diffusion coefficients between the equations are not insignificant, the selection of the equation should be done with caution. In this paper, the different definitions of effective diffusion coefficient are examined and discussed. As well as definitions, the lots of availabe models for the diffusion coefficient in terms of porosities are compared. Also, the constrictiviy which explains the effect of cross sectional area change over the diffusion path was discussed.

To check the variability of the effective diffusion coefficient in the unsaturated porous soil media. a Monte Carlo simulation was done for the equation suggested by Millington and Quirk(1961). The results shows that the probability density function of D$_{c}$/D$_{o}$ is positively skewed. It means the chance of having less effective diffusion coefficient values in the soil media than mean value is high. Also, the distribution types of D$_{c}$/D$_{o}$ are about same regardless of assumed distribution types of input parameters.ers.ers.
The radon concentrations in soil air were measured before and after a rainfall. 226Ra concentration, porosity, moisture content and temperature in soil were measured at Kyungpook National University in Daegu. As the results of measurement and analysis, the arithmetic mean of measured 222Rn concentration increased from 12100 ± 500 Bq/㎥ to 16200 ± 600 Bq/㎥ after the rainfall. And the measured 226Ra concentration was 61.4 ± 5.7 Bq/kg and the measured porosity was 0.5 in soil. The estimated values of 226Ra concentration and porosity using diffusion model of 222Rn in soil were 60.3 Bq/kg and 0.509, respectively. The estimated values were similar to the measured values. 222Rn concentration in soil increased with depth and moisture content. The estimations were obtained through fitting based on the diffusion model of 222Rn using the measurement values. The measured depth profiles of 222Rn were similar to the calculated depth profiles of 222Rn in soil. We hope that the results of this study will be useful for environmental radiation analysis.

Natural attenuation has been actively studied and often selected as final clean-up process in remediation of contaminated ground-water and soil for the last decade. Accordingly, understanding of natural processes affecting the fate and transport of contaminants in the subsurface becomes important for a success of implementation of the natural remediation strategy, Contaminant advection and diffusion processes in the unsaturated zone are naturally related to environmental changes in the atmosphere. The atmospheric pressure changes affecting the transport of contaminants in the subsurface are investigated in this study. Moisture content, trichloroethylene (TCE) concentration, temperature, and pressure variations in the subsurface were measured for the July, August, November, and December 2001 at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. These data were used for a one-phase flow and one-component transport model in simulating the soil-gas flow and accordingly the TCE transport in the subsurface in accordance with the atmosphere pressure variations at the surface. The soil-gas velocities during the sampling periods varied with a magnitude of $10^{-6}\;to\;10^{-7}\;m\;s^{-1}$ at land surface. The TCE advection fluxes at land surface were several orders of magnitude smaller than the TCE diffusion fluxes. A sensitivy analysis indicated that advection fluxes were more sensitive to changes in geo-environmental conditions compared to diffusion fluxes. Of all the parameters investigated in this study, moisture content has the most significant effect on TCE advection and diffusion fluxes.
The effectiveness of quicklime-based stabilization/solidification (S/S) in immobilizing lead (Pb) was assessed by performing semi-dynamic leaching tests (ANS16.1). In order to simulate landfill leaching conditions, the ANS 16.1 test was modified by using 0.014 N acetic acid (pH = 3.25) instead of distilled water. Artificial soil samples as well as field soil samples contaminated with Pb were tested. The effectiveness of quicklime treatment was evaluated by determining diffusion coefficients ($D_e$) and leachability indices (LX). A model developed by de Groot and van der Sloat was used to elucidate the controlling Pb leaching mechanisms. Overall, upon quicklime treatment Pb leachability was significantly reduced in a]l of the samples tested. The mean LX values were higher than 9 for an artificial soil sample containing 30% kaolinite treated with 10% quicklime and for a field soil sample treated with 10% quicklime, which suggests that S/S treated soils can be considered acceptable for "controlled utilization". Moreover, quicklime treatment was more effective in artificially contaminated soil with high kaolinite content (30%), indicating the amount of clay plays an important role in the success of the treatment. The controlling Pb leaching mechanism was found to be diffusion, in all quicklime treated samples.
Migration of leachate generated through embankment of construction waste soil (CWS) in low-lying areas was studied through physical and chemical analysis. A leachate solution containing soluble cations from CWS was found to have a pH above 9.0. To determine the distribution coefficients in the alkali solution, column and migration tests were conducted in the laboratory. The physical and chemical properties of CWS satisfied environmental soil criteria; however, the pH was high. The effective diffusion coefficients for CWS ions fell within the range of $0.725-3.3{\times}10^{-6}cm^2/s$. Properties of pore water and the amount of undissolved gas in pore water influenced advection-diffusion behavior. Contaminants migrating from CWS exhibited time-dependent concentration profiles and an advective component of transport. Thus, the transport equations for CWS contaminant concentrations satisfied the differential equations in accordance with Fick's 2nd law. Therefore, the migration of the contaminant plume when the landfilling CWS reaches water table can be predicted based on pH using the effective diffusion coefficient determined in a laboratory test.

The accurate prediction of grouting upward diffusion height is crucial for estimating the bearing capacity of tip-grouted piles. Borehole construction during the installation of bored piles induces soil unloading, resulting in both radial stress loss in the surrounding soil and an impact on grouting fluid diffusion. In this study, a modified model is developed for predicting grout diffusion height. This model incorporates the classical rheological equation of power-law cement grout and the cavity reverse expansion model to account for different degrees of unloading. A series of single-pile tip grouting and static load tests are conducted with varying initial grouting pressures. The test results demonstrate a significant effect of vertical grout diffusion on improving pile lateral friction resistance and bearing capacity. Increasing the grouting pressure leads to an increase in the vertical height of the grout. A comparison between the predicted values using the proposed model and the actual measured results reveals a model error ranging from -12.3% to 8.0%. Parametric analysis shows that grout diffusion height increases with an increase in the degree of unloading, with a more pronounced effect observed at higher grouting pressures. Two case studies are presented to verify the applicability of the proposed model. Field measurements of grout diffusion height correspond to unloading ratios of 0.68 and 0.71, respectively, as predicted by the model. Neglecting the unloading effect would result in a conservative estimate.
Generally, the soil around railroad is contaminated by the leakage of oil during its maintenance or the operation of rolling stock. Because the railroad soil is located under ballast and is hardened with the designated strength due to safety, the characteristics of the polluted site are different. In this study, the phenomena of oil diffusion in the railroad site was investigated using 2-D reactor. The used oil was lubricant. As a result, the maximum diffusion depth of lubricant was about 9.5 cm due to its high viscosity and the hardened soil. The lubricant was diffused by gravity more than by horizontal migration. In the future, these results can be applied to develop a remediation method for the contaminated railroad soil.

Two dimensional diffusion model test was conducted to investigate the sedimentation properties and consolidation process of reclaimed ground using dredging coarse soil which is composed of passing amount 20 percentage and 45 percentage of #200 sieve size respectively. The passing amount of #200 sieve size affected on sedimentation properties. The coarse soil which is passing amount of 20 percent showed that the sedimentation structure was layered type and passing amount of 45 percentage was wall-partition type according diffusion distance. Furthermore, the water content of surface and section, and distribution of fine soil were changed according to diffusion distance. and the change amount of pore water pressure and strength property when soil is diffused, segregated and accumulated can be applied efficiently in design of dredging and reclamation.
