The morphology of deposits on $15-{\mu}m$ thin SiC filaments has been investigated with SEM and compared with UV-excited laser induced broadband fluorescences in co-flowing, propane laminar diffusion flames in a reduced oxidizer environment. The homogeneous morphology of droplet-like deposits inner flame zone and the agglomeration of condensed-phase deposits and the transition to soots from grown up droplet-like precursors with approaching the flame surface can be observed in a barely sooting flame. The average size of the mature soots deposited in the luminous flame edge is scarcely dependent on their axial position in a confined flame under reduced oxidizer condition. A double structure of PAH fluorescence is observed in near-extinction flames with further decreasing of oxidizer. A comparison of the PAH fluorescence with the morphologies of deposits indicates that appearance of the "dark" hollow zone is caused by a decreased number density of developed liquid-phase large molecules and the outer weak fluorescence zone is caused by the diffusion of gas-phase small molecules.
The effect of surrounding air velocity on the soot deposition process from a diffusion flame to a solid wall was investigated in a microgravity environment to attain in-situ observations of the process. An ethylene($C_2H_4$) diffusion flame was formed around a cylindrical rod burner in surrounding air velocity of $v_{air}$=2.5, 5, and 10 cm/s with oxygen concentration of 35 % and wall temperature of 300 K. Laser extinction was adopted to determine the soot volume fraction distribution between the flame and burner wall. The experimental results show that the soot particle distribution region moves closer to the surface of the wall with increasing surrounding air velocity. A numerical simulation was also performed to understand the motion of soot particles in the flame and the characteristics of the soot deposition to the wall. The results successfully predicted the differences in the motion of soot particles by different surrounding air velocity near the burner surface and are in good agreement with observed soot behavior in microgravity. A comparison of the calculations and experimental results led to the conclusion that a consideration of the thermophoretic effect is essential to understand the soot deposition on walls.
The oxygen fuel MILD (Moderate or Intense Low-oxygen Dilution) combustion has been considered as one of the promising combustion technology for flame stability, high thermal efficiency, low emissions and improved productivity. In this paper, the effect of oxygen and fuel injection condition on formation of MILD combustion was analyzed using lab scale oxygen fuel MILD combustion furnace. The results show that the flame mode was changed from a diffusion flame mode to a split flame mode via a MILD combustion flame mode with increasing the oxygen flow rate. A high degree of temperature uniformity was achieved using optimized combination of fuel and oxygen injection configuration without the need for external oxygen preheating. In particular, the MILD combustion flame was found to be very stable and constant flame temperature region at 7 KW heating rate and oxygen flow rate 75-80 l/min.
We prepared the nano-sized $TiO_2$ particles by the diffusion flame reactor and investigated the effects of several process variables on the generation and transport properties of $TiO_2$ particle. As the length from the tip of diffusion flame reactor increases, the size of $TiO_2$ particle increases by the coagulation between particles. The structure of $TiO_2$ particles prepared is almost found to be anatase. It was found that the $TiO_2$ particle size depends more largely on the change of reactor temperature than on the change of inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration.
The differential diffusion of two species in jet is considered. The direct photo images of $H_{2}/SF_{6}$ flame are taken and the non-react jets of $H_{2}/SF_{6}$ mixture are visualized with Rayleigh scattering method. The structures of Dual flame are found in the photography. As the volume fraction of $H_2$ in mixture is increased, the flame at side is long and as the volume fraction of $SF_{6}$ in mixture is increased, the flame at center is long. This phenomena are deduced from the non-react mixture using Rayleigh scattering method. Result show that the volume fraction in the mixture is important in differential diffusion.
PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) is a recently developed technique for visualizing the fluid velocity fields. Because it has several advantages over the LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry), it became one of the most popular diagnostic tools in spite of its short history. However, its application to combustion is restricted by some problems such as flame illumination, scattered light refraction, particle density variation due to heat release, the combined effect of abrupt change in particle density and fluid velocity on flame contour, and thermophoresis which is particle lagging due to temperature gradient. These problems are expected to be originated from the non-continuous characteristics of flames and the limitations of particle dynamics. In the present study, these problems were considered for the visualization of the instantaneous coaxial hydrogen diffusion flame. And the instantaneous flame contour was detected using particle density difference. The visualized diffusion flame velocity field shows its turbulent and meandering nature. It was also observed that the flame is located inside the outer shear layer and flame geometry is largely influenced by the vorticity.
Growth characteristics of silica particles have been studied experimentally using in situ sampling technique from $H_2/O_2TEOS$ diffusion flame with carefully devised sampling probe. Verification of sampling result was done through new method and effects of flame condition and TEOS flow rate on growth characteristics of silica particles were investigated. By comparing particles sampled by thermophoretic sampling in flame with those by collector sampling after probe, particles do not change before and after probe sampling, which was clearly proved from the fact that the result of TEM image analysis makes good agreement with that of SMPS measurement. As flame temperature increases, the effect of coalescence or sintering becomes important mechanism during growth of silica particles, resulting in canceling the effect of coagulation, which makes mean diameter of silica particles increase slowly. With increase in TEOS flow rate, the number concentration of generated silica particle increases but residence time of particles in flame decreases. As a result, there exists upper limit to which the diameter of silica particle increases under same flame condition.

In recent years, flame synthesis has absorbed a great deal of attention as a combustion method for the production of metal oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, and other related carbon nanostructures, over the existing conventional methods. Flame synthesis is an energy-efficient, scalable, cost-effective, rapid and continuous process, where flame provides the necessary chemical species for the nucleation of carbon structures (feed stock or precursor) and the energy for the production of carbon nanostructures. The production yield can be optimized by altering various parameters such as fuel profile, equivalence ratio, catalyst chemistry and structure, burner configuration and residence time. In the present report, diffusion and premixed flame synthesis methods are reviewed to develop a better understanding of factors affecting the morphology, positioning, purity, uniformity and scalability for the development of carbon nanotubes along with their correlated carbonaceous derivative nanostructures.
In order to elucidate the effects of positive pressure gradient on flame properties, structure and stabilization, an experimental study is made on turbulent diffusion flame stabilized by a circular cylinder in a divergent duct flow. A commercial grade gaseous propane is injected from two slits on the rod as fuel. In this paper, stabilization, characteristics and flame structure are examined by varying the divergent angle of duct. Temperature, ion current and Schlieren photographs were measured. It is found that critical divergent angle is expected to be about 8 ~ 12 degree through blow-off velocity pattern to divergent angle and the positive pressure gradient influences the flame temperature, intensity of ion current and eddy structure behind the rod. With the increase of divergent angle, typical temperature of recirculation zone is low but intensity of ion current is high in shear layer behind rod. Energy distributions of fluctuating temperature and ion current signals turn up low frequency corresponding to large scale eddies but high frequency corresponding to small scale eddies as well as low with the increase of divergent angle. Therefore the flame structure becomes a typical distributed-reacting flame.
Steady-state structure and acoustic-pressure responses of $H_2$/Air counterflow diffusion flames are studied numerically with a detailed chemistry in view of acoustic instability. The Rayleigh criterion is adopted to judge acoustic amplification or attenuation from flame responses. Steady-state flame structures are first investigated and flame responses to various acoustic-pressure oscillations are numerically calculated in near-equilibrium and near-extinction regimes. The acoustic responses of $H_2$/Air flame show that the responses in near-extinction regime always contribute to acoustic amplification regardless of acoustic-oscillation frequency Flames near extinction condition are sensitive to pressure perturbation and thereby peculiar nonlinear responses occur, which could be a possible mechanism in generating the threshold phenomena observed in combustion chamber of propulsion systems.
